    Mahlathini is a real legend. The Queens were phenomenal. I hope Mzansi does something to preserve these guys' legacy. In my humble opinion, Mahlathini can be put in the same league as our Thomas Mapfumo, Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, Yousou Ndour, etc.

      Defiitely ..., although he will always be castigated for his 'involvement' with the white government

      @dzingaichakazamba 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@russellfitzpatrick503 Yeah. The apatheid government, like some African dictators always found ways of using popular musicians, who naively (or through greed) agreed to be used. Very unfortunate, but talent, when fully exploited by the owner, greatly benefits all.

    How blessed was I to be introduced to their music when I was a little girl by my father, they left an impact on me to this day at 34 years old. I was lucky enough to have the chance to see them perform live when they came to my city. As young as I was I still remember dancing on a table
    Top to their amazing sounds..❤️ timeless music, they are undoubtedly the best in my mind.

    So throbbing and rhyrhimatic the real Africa. I remember this on Two Band Champion radio. The best from Joburg. A town my could literally worship that it was more beautiful than heaven. Kkkkk

    It happened one day when i was on an assignment to cover Mahlathini at Tsholofelo Community Hall with an old frien of mine, Chase Mhango (the man who later started music awards, but i hear he's late in his home country of Zim). Mahlathini had come with his ladies, Mahotella Queens and while we jived to Izuuuluuu li a duuuduumaaa!, we were imbibing. By the time drinks got the better of me, he was on his last song and we concocted a plan to waylay him backstage. When the song finished, he was already out of the door. I made my move, and the man was so accommodating but, when i tried saying , Greetings, it came out as 'Greee…' and Uncle
    Chase realised my predicament and came to the rescue shoving me aside with his elbow. The conversation went like this.
    Uncle Chase: Good Evening Sir (with a heavy Zim accent). Are you Mr Madlamini?'
    Mahlathini: What? What did you say?
    Uncle Chase: We want to know if you're Mr Mahlamini.
    Mahlathini: That's not my name. Pliz just get away from me!
    By then i tried reasoning with him as well as telling Uncle Chase he made a mistake, but he Mbaxanga king just walked away to our utter frustration.
    In such angst, Uncle Chase could only mutter under his breath with clenched teeth: 'This man is so rude. How can he just walk away like that?'
    Me: But Sir, you called him by a wrong name. He is Mahlathini, not Madlamini. That's when it dawned on Uncle Chase that we let a scoop walk away

      It would almost impossible to translate it in English. Because it's too tribal and cultural. But it's simple talking about a ladies of a certain reed dance(umngqashiyo). How good they dance and proud doing it. That's how close translation it I could come. It's about certain tribal/traditional dance.
