Saw Miriam Makeba perform around 1960, give or take a year, at the Gate of Horn in Chicago. Gate was a Mecca for many folk music performers of that era, Bob Gibson, Pete Seeger, Judy Collin’s, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary and many more. She was captivating. Great time in music history.
My mom was a big fan, I recognize this song. As a child I used to sing along with her, dancing through the room. I’m Dutch, but I was convinced I was pretty close to the text. 😀
I am proud to say I was at this concert in 1987 as a 20 year old. My love and admiration for Miriam is still as strong. Rest in peace Mama Afrika. Your music is a true legacy.
I wish I can have a conversation with you sometime about your experience, I grew up in South America, I have watch the DVD so many times, I look at the people's faces in the crowd and try to imagine the emotions they experienced...amazing!
She's one of those people I wish could live on forever literally. She came to Jamaica some years ago and many of us were not able to attend the concert. The cost was out of our reach. 😢
I am proud South African and Mama Makeba's songs touches my soul. ❤Lala ngoxolo Mbokodo💪🏾 May your spirit just like your voice continue to soar❤️🇿🇦❤️🇿🇦❤️🇿🇦
Oh man what a show it was,SA's greatest Bro Hugh Maekela, Ray Chikapa Phiri, (Stimela) Joseph Tshabalala & Ladysmith Black Mambazo , it was a bright sunny Sunday afternoon, live in Rufaro stadium Harare (remembered with happiest moments)
I remember the times that my parents would sit me at the record player and play the songs and they made me remember this song in particular and I learned that the Phoneticaler song never really knew what the words were but I just felt it in my soul at the age 5 and six when both of my parents died my mother first she died at 51 and I sat over her body in the morgue and I sang this song to her who would’ve known the blessing that I gave her and our family. Many years later my father passed away in my arms and I sang this exact same song to him and I felt the presence of God as he took his last breath sometimes your parents know more than you think they know obedience out weights sacrifice thank you Mama Africa.
That's always been the beauty of Mother Africa's many tongues...we are both many and one at the same damned time...glad to see there's so much appreciation still.
I sang these songs all the time when I was a little girl. She would explain what the song was about. You couldn't tell me that I didn't know how to speak "African".
Africans forget heroes and heroines such as this iconic woman. A statue of Miriam Makeba should be raised high by the best port in most African countries, especially South Africa
I can remember her first appearance in the UNITED STATES. I went to THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW in New York City as saw her performance. My aunt was from Malawi AFRICA and introduced me to Miriam Makeba. I was just a child who fell in love with her CLICK SONG to the point where I actually LEARNED HOW TO SING IT. Rest in PEACE MOMMA AFRICA.
It's so good to hear miriam has a beautiful voice all the Africans are blessed they are talented in music song n dance n their culture n food too. Happy to listen to miriam Miriam

Her music was in our house since the 60s. One my moms favourite . Grateful got to see her in Edmonton live the week after my mom passed . It was a very bittersweet concert to attend that eve with my dad who had gotten the tickets to surprise my mom with . First week nov 2001 .
How beautiful. ! And if you notice..., there's only ONE voice singing, so precise the voices that is so congruous, SO exact. 👍 2 months later... Complete beauty, from sounds of music to performers so enjoying their singing... What and how can governments who deplore this sweetness exist. ? (BUT THEY DO AND WILL DO, thanks to some of us inexplicable humans. 😫)

No words can even begin to describe Paul Simon's contribution to our music...heck there was a time in my youth when I thought he's South African :-D I know one person can't change the whole world but the actions of one man can indeed drop the first domino to activate the effect...
These sisters gave me goosebumps. On the other hand, can anyone imagine her influence and power to be prohibited return to the motherland of your birth. Imagine! No, stop. You heard part of the story in the video intro for the Queen of 🇿🇦 Miriam Makeba. That injustice sucked then and it will suck whenever we remember her.
