I was sitting at the end of the frontstretch going into turn one with my dad that day. Only race I got to sit under the old metal roof cover over the frontstretch seats. Sure made it loud and it was awesome. I sure miss these great days of Nascar.
Just so you know, SmiFF, I go thru all of these races & like them & add them to my playlist named ‘Quintessential Time In NASCAR’.. Needless to say, My step son whose 8yrs old is getting a serious history lesson of NASCAR.
Excellent recording for a 1989 race! This is last non-short track race for the Monte Carlo which is pretty cool! Also, the last race with the iconic roof atop the entire then front straight grandstand. For the 1989 Southern 500 in September the roof was limited to a small section coming off turn 4. This is the NSACAR i grew up with as a kid....
They used both Goodyear and Hoosier tires. It was a tire war that lasted from 1988 until the first North Wilkesboro race. Hoosier came back in 1994, but left after that year. And it was a very heated tire war.
@@Fetterkuss1983 sadly true as that wasn’t a good idea after all …… but a great era IMO despite the issues (a lot of drivers lost biirc more off the track, then on)
Dear NASCAR
Please bring back the Winston Cup Series
Thank you
They can't.
Not diverse enough, not equitable enough, not safe enough and all that nonsense

Im watching them chronologically more often than not with a 4 year old boy. He likes Rusty and (groan) Darell Waltrip.
That’s a great thing man, this was real nascar the way it was meant to be.
It’s now the Powder Puff Series
Forgot how good this broadcast team was.Seems like yesterday but it is now over 31 years ago. Thanks for the uploads SMIFF!
Great years in NASCAR with Bob, Ned, Benny, and Dr. Jerry Punch.
Best audio I've heard of all your vids. SKOAL BANDIT!

i always wondered why they took the roof off at darlington
THE BANDIT IS BACK
I remember they had tire wars but I didn't remember how strange it was. Changing tire brands mid race is nuts!
That Olds was the best looking Nascar ever. Fight me.
It’s nice but I’m partial to that Monte Carlo. Especially Earnhardt’s in ‘88. That was a bad looking machine.
I'm partial to the Stavola/High Life Regal, but that Olds Cutlass body was a winner everywhere it went.
My favorite is the 89 to 97 thunderbird
That mashup of Billy Ocean and Midnight Oil at the beginning...
Great to see the victory lane celebration
Elmo Langley’s 1st year with NASCAR …. Wow
A nice comeback for Harry Gant
So strange to see cars with Goodyear logos above the wheel wells, but shod with Hoosier tires.

Ah, the good ol' tire war...
Adds excitement
Only casualties of that war were the drivers. Lots of broken bones and worse from that.

16:50 race start
Tough is Stan Hansen
"Trans" had a different meaning back then.🤣🤣🤣
Richard and big E. Makes me sick!
