The stockcars looked 1000 times better than today. Today there are all build out of the same building kit. The only thing that you can see that the car next to the other is a different brand, is due to the fake sticker headlights and the brand logo.
Back when all you needed was a solid car, a good driver, and a few good mates that knew how to spin a spanner, weld, and change a tyre at speed. It would have been a good era to be a stock car enthusiast, both as a racer and a fan.

It nearly got me doubling-over in agony hearing about those upscale amenities for a NASCAR venue.
These cars sound perfect. Todays cars sound completely different. Love the old races & the cars look fabulous compared to today's stuff. Thanks for posting. P.S. Rest Peacefully Cale. Also, Falstaff beer-sure do miss it. A great product.
Despite their tangle earlier in the race Cale and David finished with clean racing. Cake’s car was pretty banged up but he didn’t make any mistakes for Pearson to capitalize on at the end. Considering the amount of sliding around that was amazing to watch. .
1968, I was a Senior in High School, chasing the gals and slamming beers with my pals. It was a different world back then. A lot of changes for the good and a lot of changes not so good.
Wow , This Was Just Awesome & Seeing Great Ole S'Kool Racing At The Track Called " Too Tough To Tame " Darlington , This Is Great Stuff Right Here & So Cool To Watch 🏁🏁🏁👍👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍✌️
I attended the next year after this one. There was a very long rain delay and I wound up listening to the last few laps at home on the radio, but the best I can remember Cale won it too.
This is real stock car racing. The cars now are nothing but tin cans not stock cars. I love to watch these old races. I hardly watch racing now. Thank You for the video.
Did you actually watch the video? These weren't actually stock either. And today's cars are way faster, safer, and reliable. Also today's races are WAY more competitive than any of the races in those days.
I like watching those old stock cars . That's when racing was racing. The best teams actually won. As time went on , Nascar came up with too many rules to slow cars down and make them the same . I really believe it caused fans to lose interest. Plus when drivers like The Earnhardt's , and Petty's , and Rusty Wallace, the drivers from that eara . Racing is not the same.
Considering that this was film stock that was over a half-century old, and probably played countless times on film projectors, degradations of film stock is expected.
What I call the golden years. And a Buick. I believe the 36 car of H.B. Bailey is a Pontiac. It seemed that in those days you had maybe ten cars or less that could get into position to win.
Does the modern NASCAR even run at Darlington anymore? I bet they don’t.That’s how long it’s been since I watched a race...and my father got me hooked in he early 70’s with WWOS coverage.
@@andyharman3022 yeah Ford and Dodge went through some strange rules that NASCAR made. They claimed they were doing it in the sense of keeping all the cars equal, but it ended up favoring one over the other Automotive manufacturers. Such as, restrictor plates smaller carburetors destroking engines adding weight Etc... they did this to anything over 366 cubic inches... Which ended up helping the Ford 351 Cleveland later on because it could run unrestricted
1968 weight was based on 9.36# x CID so a 396 is 3707# while the 427 was 3997#. De-stroked 427 to 396 got less torque but about the same HP at higher RPMs. The weight savings with little to no HP loss was worth it.
The drivers were about the same size, but the "greenhouse" on those cars was much larger, and drivers weren't packaged nearly as tightly as they are today. Back then, it was probably the easiest way to get out of the car.
The scene with the “ gasman “ with gallons of gas flying up in the air and all over has me ( almost ) urinating in my pants , laughing my ass off !!! Bla ha ha ! Glad that he didn’t have a burning cigarette in his mouth like the mechanics in the pits did !!!
I love watching these races, it’s sad that we don’t have stock car racing the way it was.
Race what with what you bring
@Scott Crawford know of a 90 yr old man raced motorcycle on dirt tracks way back he looked like a wild man in his eyes
@eric kanter like pro football and maybe college football

NASCAR and the Allman Brothers. Two excellent reasons to feel good about being a southerner!
Let's not forget The Marshall Tucker Band

The sound effects over the wrecks are funny
That was my very 1st darlington race. Awesome
When I was a kid we rooted for the brand and driver. Petty\Plymouth\Hemi
And Ford always won!
When NASCAR was fun to watch. Hate it today!
What a race. These was real racing. Thanks for video.

Apparently not, even according to the narrator. Not even the sheet metal has been left alone.
@@FATMIKED5183 At least it is metal. Nowadays it's all fiberglass that just happens to look like real cars.

Bring these cars back! There are enough remanufactured replacement parts to have a fully supported classic stock car circuit.
NASCAR Was Safer Than Formula One In 1968.
I was there...also there in 65 when Cale took the 27 car over the rail......we drove 250 miles with no interstate...Real racin in those days

This gen of cars were so damn heavy back then there was no need for a rear spoiler to keep the backend down at high speeds. Wow.
They did have a small spoiler lip of two inches or less; but it wasn't noticeable from a distance.
a big wide long trunk did a good job. But that first Mopar with a wing won by how manylaps?
NnnnnOPE!😆
Loved to have been at these races. Damn how cool
Hell yeah
Back when the field was made of dirt poor bandits instead of the silver spoon 20 year old children of billionaire team owners.
