Dude! You are the most trusted voice in home theater on you tube. I watch a few videos out there and still question applying those techniques. Watch your videos and without thinking twice I immediately trust your advice and apply it.

Mount the ATMOS speakers in search light stands. That way you can change angle, height, direction and position for the perfect rebound sound.

I went through all 3 options before finally settling with in ceiling. I had the cheap onkyo up firing atmos modules in a 5.2.2. Eventually upgraded receiver for a 5.2.4 and went with Sony atmos modules. Of course it was a lot better and you could hear the atmos effects more clearly. The speakers were also able to be wall mounted like option 2. I tried it and honestly, the up firing sounded better.
I did very light testing I'll admit but during those tests, the up firing sounded better. It was as if the sound was being lost with the wall option. It didn't sound like things were above me the way the up firing made it seem. My only guess is that maybe if the on the walls could've been towed in like you mentioned in the video, it would be better sounding.
I now have klipsch cdt-5650-c IIs in the ceiling and it's obviously the best way to experience dolby atmos. I want to do more testing with them since they have adjustable tweeters and woofers. For now I have them facing the MLP. I wanna try woofers pointing down with tweeters aimed at ears and see what kind of experience I get. Most in ceiling speakers just point straight down so it has me wondering.
I just want the best sound possible for my setup and room. I've gotten so obsessed with atmos that I usually play atmos demos for a couple minutes before watching movies just to "make sure it's working". I just love how more immersive this technology is. Too bad I get distracted easily by the atmos effects going on. Seriously an awesome way to experience movies and shows at home.

@@jjcps3 phew, commenting on a 4 yr old comment lol. Well, I'm pretty heavily biased towards onkyo receivers. In the span of 8 years, I've gone through about 5 different receivers for various different setups. 4 of them were onkyos and one was a pioneer. I'm currently using an onkyo txnr7100 which is a 9 channel receiver for a 5.x.4 atmos setup. I honestly just like the onkyo UI and the prices they go for. I really would've wanted to get an onkyo rz50 but there was a huge shortage during the troubled times a couple years back 😷.
I recommend you set yourself a budget and just go for the best bang for your buck in that price range. Also don't be afraid to try a used or refurbed receiver. 3 of my onkyo (696, 787, 797) receivers and the pioneer(LX503) were used off of ebay.
Now, I would say go for something that has the latest features such as hdmi 2.1, earc support and dirac live room correction etc etc . Get a 9 channel to at least have a 5.x.4 which is a great balanced configuration. You at least want 4 atmos.
If I were to go for a receiver right now, I'd honestly say get an onkyo rz50. It's 1000 new or 750 refurbed w/1yr warranty on ebay as I'm writing this. My reasoning is you get all the newest features and some future proofing. If you want to upgrade in the future, you can go up to a 7.x.4 or 5.1.6(6 atmos speakers is apparently the absolute best way to experience atmos). You can also upgrade and use separates (amplifiers) with this receiver if you want the extra juice for your speakers. If you're a gamer, you can get 4k 120hz output. I can go on and on. So yea, I'd go for the rz50 or any receiver from 2022 and up. As long as you have those features, you should be good for the next 5-10 years. If you're going for something brand new then they're all pretty much the same if they're priced the same. It really comes down to preference to brand or User inyerface at that point.

Hello again Kpaceguy, as we talk about yesterday I bought my first Marantz Receiver, model SR6012. But unfortunately not good as what I expected, feel like my Pioneer Elite gives me more sound effects. I assume I might haven't done it perfectly. I using 7 channels 5.1.2 for Dolby atmos. I just made a small adjustment to my heights and it made a huge difference (IMHO). After watching several You-Tube videos and talking to Klipsch, I ad-libbed and took some 1x2 tomato stakes skinny-side from the basement and wedged them along the outside edges of my front RP500SAs to angle them in more towards my listening position instead of straight out 3 ft to either side of my single chair listening position to more-or-less match my main speaker toe-in (I don't have anything in the back except my surrounds because the chair is against the wall). I proceeded to test them out with Terminator: Salvation and it sounded great with my 7.2.2 setup. I thought I had the AVR set to Direct, but it added the heights to the mix on it's own to "Multi-channel plus Dolby Surround." I haven't run them through Odyssey yet. I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make, but I will probably do it later this week. Maybe I'll put on Ready: Player One or Saving Private Ryan and see ow it goes. I can't put anything in the ceiling and/or don't want to go through the trouble in my small basement bedroom.

Glad you mentioned the bookshelf speakers mounted at an angle being a good option as thats what I was going with I feel little more confident with that decision now.
Whats really hard to find and understand is do Atmos enabled receivers know if the speakers being used are actual Atmos speakers or not?
Is there something that translates from the speaker to tell the receiver if its Atmos enabled or not.
Or does the receiver just treat the chosen speaker set as Atmos if that’s what you choose in the setting?
Asking because I have purchased bookshelf speakers for this purpose as they are more on the affordable side.

    • @Kpaceguy
      @Kpaceguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The receiver can't detect anything. It plays the same signal regardless and calibrates it accordingly. Speakers are labeled as "atmos" because they are designed specifically for that purpose and no other

I have Prime Elevations mounted as front an rear heights. I noticed that your couch is pretty close to the back wall. My couch is a bit under 3 feet from my back wall. I'm sure that ideally our couches should be well forward of the wall but that's not possible. Givej that, after you run room correction, do you adjust the gain on your front and rear heights? Since your MLP is so close to the rears, what kind of gain adjustments on them do you make, if any, to give them more breathing room from where you sit?

If your speakers have a switch on the back, as my Klipsch does, make sure that it's switched to height if it's on the wall or Atmos if upfiring...it chances the frequency response of the speaker depending on the switch position. When I added my heights, my Denon determined what they were by the position I told them they were in and I guess it adjusts the mix specifically for the configuration.

For tenants, in an apartment, upfiring is the ONLY way to go. Landlord will balk at my attempt at the wall hang - if I choose that method - or tenants above my apartment will quickly come knocking to tell me to take the speaker down if I drill and place a ceiling speaker. I have to compromise and settle for upfiring on top of my L and R towers. I have a PSB upfiring on top of all PSBs 5.1.2 config. hanging off a Denon. Works perfect. I am happy with the result.

In general, atmos speakers sounds best if the speakers are directed upwards so that you cannot hear from which speaker the sound is coming from. When it comes to front and rear speakers, you get a clearer surround effect if they are not aimed at where you are sitting, with a measuring microphone connected to the amplifier you get a very good system, but in a living room ceiling speakers are unnecessary, unless the room is very large

  • @87CREW

Auro 3D, has a different way of producing sound. Putting 4 speakers in the ceiling only works for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Auro 3D works either with 2 or 3 layers. (3th one being the VoG "voice of G'D" in-ceiling speaker) honestely, I like the speaker layout more from Auro 3D. But you can't go wrong with either of them.

Very good video but from what I heard you are not entirely correct about the in-ceiling speakers. It is definitely the best setup for Atmos and most likely also DTS:X but it is not gonna work with Auro 3D. Auro can only be enabled when your speakers are defined as front height and rear height in your AVR as far as I know. But I haven‘t tried that myself and don‘t have a chance to do so. Maybe you could just as a test label them as in-ceiling and try if the Auro-Matic can still be enabled. That would be very interesting. Thanks, man!

So there is a space between your ceiling and the above apartment floor. However, the complex probably doesnt want you cutting into it. That being said if they allow it, and some might, go for it. I am looking at doing it in a 1980s built house with the master bedroom over it. My hesitation is the master bedroom above. So I am looking into cans and shoving rockwool in the bay above the can. When I redo the floor in the bedroom above I already have an underlayment that is foam I am going to lay down. Ultimately, I want the home theater to go into a 24x24 addition that has 6 inches of spray foam insulation around it. It is an attic over top so sound should not be a problem. That is a few years off due to funding / manpower. I use the area as storage since it is easier than walking up and down some stairs to a three foot attic.

Otherwise Overhead surround or a speaker which it is as there isn't any black-magic in it, its a speaker for reproducing sound. I cannot do ceiling speakers due to the position of the ceiling joists and HVAC. I am forced to use ceiling bounce speakers. Please read this now and comprehend it later: bounce speakers are a gimmick. Dolby claiming that bounce speakers reflect sound off the ceiling to the MLP is like claiming that you can mount the center speaker behind the MLP that points toward a sidewall and the dialogue will reflect off the wall toward the MLP.
One friend has four in ceiling speakers. Another friend mounted four repurposed Bose cubes onto his ceiling. Atmos and X in their rooms absolutely destroy the bounce speakers in mine. There is no comparison, I would even go so far as to state that unless you can do in ceiling or on ceiling speakers, don’t waste time or money on bounce speakers.
