John Constantine was being used in a new HBO series around the same time and he is a central character of it so by copyright they couldn't use him. Joanna Constantine is an actual character created in The Sandman universe who is an ancestor of John (who you'll see later as "Lady Joanna Constantine"), so it's not really a gender swap.
I really enjoyed this version of Constantine! So far so the changes they've made have worked.
I think Mathew is the perfect dose of levity needed to match Dream's mood and shake him out of the trauma of losing Jesamy.
