    • A DAY IN OLD SAN JUAN ...
Visiting Old San Juan in Puerto Rico is an experience that is both unique and unforgettable. The historic district of San Juan is known for its colorful colonial-era buildings, cobblestone streets, and rich cultural heritage. In this 5000-word paragraph, we will explore the sights, sounds, and experiences that await those who venture into this charming and historic part of Puerto Rico.
As you approach Old San Juan, the first thing you will notice is the imposing Castillo San Felipe del Morro. This 16th-century fort is an iconic symbol of Puerto Rico's colonial history and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort offers visitors a glimpse into the island's past, and as you explore its many levels and ramparts, you can imagine what life was like for the Spanish soldiers who once defended the island from invaders.
As you make your way further into Old San Juan, you'll find yourself walking on cobblestone streets, surrounded by brightly colored buildings that date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. These buildings were constructed by the Spanish during their occupation of Puerto Rico, and many of them have been lovingly restored and converted into museums, art galleries, shops, and restaurants.
One of the most impressive sights in Old San Juan is the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. This imposing structure was built in the 16th century and is one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. Inside, you'll find an impressive collection of religious art, including paintings and sculptures from the Spanish colonial period.
Another must-see attraction in Old San Juan is the Casa Blanca Museum. This historic home was built in the 16th century for the family of Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer who is credited with discovering Florida. Today, the Casa Blanca Museum is open to the public and offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of the island's colonial-era elite.
If you're a fan of art, then you'll love the Museum of the Americas. This museum is home to an impressive collection of artifacts and art from across the Americas, including pre-Columbian art, African art, and works by contemporary artists from Puerto Rico and beyond.
But perhaps the best way to experience Old San Juan is simply to wander its streets and soak in the sights, sounds, and smells of this vibrant neighborhood. You'll find street vendors selling everything from fresh fruit to handcrafted souvenirs, musicians playing traditional Puerto Rican music, and locals going about their daily lives.

Old San Juan is a great place. We toured both forts and had a nice lunch at a small Puerto Rican restaurant but I don't remember the name of the place. The traffic in Old San Juan is reflective of traffic throughout the island. I've driven from one side (Playa Luquillo) to the other side (Playa Boqueron). It can be a frustrating experience. For example, we stayed in Dorado. It's 20 miles from the airport. It took almost 3 hours to get there the day we landed.

I may be biased because I’m from PR 🇵🇷 but San Juan is the best port. You don’t even need a tour. Walking around San Juan is amazing and the food delicious.

I really like Raíces but as you saw it’s always busy. For an authentic feel with more local people I recommend you take the 50 cents ferry ⛴️ right by the cruise port and go to Cataño. Right where the ferry ends there is a restaurant called Don Tello that’s really good and authentic.

I also recommend “Cafe El Punto” for their stuffed avocado 🥑 dishes. If you’re vegan, Cafe Berlin on Calle San Francisco has many options. They also have “Flancocho” a dessert of flan and cake. Try a cafe con leche at Caficultura! ☕️ The closest beach to Old San Juan is the beautiful Escambron Beach -a short taxi ride away and close to popular burger 🍔 spot, “🏆El Hamburger”, I’ve heard their delicious burgers have shrunk in size so order a few and and enjoy the local beer known as Medalla (pronounced “May-dye-ah”. Enjoy!

Old San Juan restaurants are always changing. What was the top spots for me no longer exist unfortunately. That was mainly due to the main chef for two restaurants left to do his own thing and the quality in food dropped horribly.
