    I used to go on school field trips to the Shedd Aquarium when I was a kid in school (I grew up north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA)...it was always the highlight of my year. I could have spent the whole day in there. This brings back so many memories.

    What I like about Shedd Aquarium is that they've managed to expand and modernize the building while preserving much of its interior space - unlike, say, the Adler Planetarium, which has been gutted on the inside and has lost all of its original charm. My daughter loves going to the Shedd so much that we've started purchasing a yearly membership so we can afford to go several times a year. (An adult single-day ticket can cost about $35 to $45, depending on the date.)

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome! You can tell they've certainly put a lot of hard work into it. If I lived in the area I would totally be purchasing a yearly pass too

    The Shedd Aquarium used to have the oldest known australian lungfish in the world. They called him Granddad, and he was believed to be about 110 when he passed away in 2017. He had been at the aquarium for over 80 years.

    Hi Kaity, I live on Lake Michigan and to answer question about sea lamprey. Yes they are common but you would never see them at a beach or river they are mostly found on large salmon and trout that are caught deep in the great lakes. Once they attach, they don’t let go either unless the fish dies so it’s not like there are a lot of them just swimming around.

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you for the information!! I was imagining swimming in the lake then having one attach to your leg 😳 So that's good to know they are only in the deep. They are the stuff of nightmares for those fish though!

    The Lamprey eel is native to the Atantic Ocean and they swim up freshwater rivers and can be caught bare handed when they are spawning. They taste good. They come up the Lamprey River in Dover, New Hampshire in the USA. Sure are ugly though. Charley McILveen

    So, I have to ask, you keep mentioning animals being sold illegally... Sugar Gliders are native to Australia and you find them all over the place in the wild, Apparently they are 'Illegal' to keep as pets here in the US and even more so in my home town. I bought one in a pet store, are the pet stores illegal? Or is catching them in the wild illegal? Regardless, I miss my little guy, honestly my favorite pet or animal I have ever had the pleasure of taking care of, still cannot watch the home videos I have of him T____T

    Its cool to see someone learn about the great lakes since I've lived near 2 of them my entire life. They really are like freshwater beaches! Beautiful in the summer time and you can see all kinds of cool freshwater fish if you know where to look. Speaking of invasive species, there are some strips of beaches that are littered with probably billions of zebra mussel shells. Somehow I've gone my entire life without knowing about the lampreys in the great lakes. I seriously thought they were only saltwater fish so its really interesting to learn something new!

    Those lamprey eels look horrific. They are right out of a nightmare, and don't look like they are from this planet. In the wild, they latch on to salmon and such their blood out. Just disgusting. It is illegal to keep lampreys with the sole exception being public aquariums such as Shedd and Georgia Aquarium. I think that wildlife management is afraid of them spreading to other lakes and rivers in the country, and so keeping them in a home aquarium is strictly forbidden.
    A couple of other observations: the fish you identified as an alligator gar was actually a spotted gar. Alligator gar are HUGE and would need a tank longer than one of the walls of Shedd. They are a lot bigger than a full grown arapaima, and they look just as prehistoric. The largest ever recorded was caught recently and measured in a 8 1/2 feet long, had a girth of 47 inches, and weighed 372 lbs. A study was done of one of its scales, and from that they assigned an age of 95+ years old. Looking at pictures takin in the 1800's though show alligator gar much bigger than that. The problem is that back then they really didn't keep records of them. They considered it good enough to picture the men who caught it standing around the fish they'd hauled in that day. Some of the fish shown in old photos may have been as long as 12 - 15 feet long. Unlike with Trout and bass, where we've seen a steady increase in size over the last 150 years, alligator gar and paddlefish have been getting smaller.
    You were talking about carp being invasive to North America, which they are. The fish you were looking at weren't carp though. They were a similar looking, though unrelated, species called a buffalo fish. It's a little difficult for people who are not familiar with the two to get them confused for each other. It has a little to to with the mouth. If you see barbules next to the mouth as koi have, that's a carp. If they have no barbules and have a mouth that looks more like a minnow then it's a buffalo. Buffalo, in fact, are the largest member of the minnow family. The colouring and the scales look very much the same in the carp and the buffalo and that also makes them hard to tell apart.
    Having seen those lampreys, I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. They look like the material of nightmares.

    Though I remember keeping a baby one in a native tank I had when I was a kid, as larvae they filter feed. I'm sure you could imagine the shock 11yr old me had to come home from school and find it latched onto one of my fish when it matured 😅

    Great video. It felt like having a tour to see lots of different environment fish species from around the world in one single place. Thanks for sharing such a nice and informative content with us. Keep on being like this, I'm pretty sure it won't take you a long time to achieve the 100k subs goal 😊 . Greeting and blessings 🙌 from Lima, Peru!!!

    Great tour. Look up the Nile perch in regards to lake Victoria if you're interested in learning why there aren't many species available

    I grew up on Lake Erie, but never saw any Lamprey Eel's. The first time I saw a Lamprey Eel was in northern Germany at a fish market. They were smoked with skin and head still on...3 or 4 old German Men were sitting at a table out front of the market eating them with their fingers like chicken and drinking Beer 🤢. There was a massive amount of Carp in the rivers and streams along the Lake and the local commercial fisheries would catch tons of them which would be sent to New England where most would be pickled and jarred from what I was told. My German Wife told me pickled Carp was delicious🤢, but I mostly ate the Walleye & Perch from the Lake 😃.

    Does your parrotlet like to attack people? Mine was very sweet and playful with and about 3 other people. Anyone else, not so much. Barnie hated other bigger birds.😂😂😂😮

    Kaity, huge fan here. At 2:15 you say that the fly river turtle is the only type of freshwater turtle that doesn't need to exit the water. There are actually a few other species of fresh water turtles that are like this. The mata mata turtle from South America comes to mind immediately but there are a few other examples as well.
    Anyway, keep up the great videos please! I look forward to them
