Hi Ciara, what's exactly setting it up for you? The complete set up of a hurdy gurdy includes cotton, rosin, string preasure, tangent tuning etc etc... so it's complex. What do you mean? Hopefully I can do that vid for you soon

Hi! Sorry , when the sound is like that it 's because you have too much pressure between wheel and strings. So if the wheel or bridge position can't be change, you can add small papers under strings on the bridge. The rosin is not a parameter. Sorry I gave my own experience cause when I discovered that it was a great progress for me.

Yes of course you can also change the string pressure, But I still think rosin is a "parameter" as It affects the responsiveness of the dog and also the grab of the wheel having the same pressure But I get your point, you can make the wheel work with any amount of Rossin if you can control the preassures, totally agree! :)

Así que sí, un video explicando puesta a punto del instrumento desde 0 sería genial. Colocación de cuerdas, algodón, afinación y resina... Un canal genial y una gran ayuda en FB también. Saludos
Thank you so much again for doing these videos for beginners! I slowly getting to know my gurdy and trying to solve out some things on my own when my instrument is playing not as good as previous days... first thing I do is apply rosin... if it does not help I change the cotton ( i realized that amount of cotton higly changes the tone of a melody string so i had to apply sufficient amout of cotton which took me almost 1 hour :D yes, sometimes i had to change the amout of cotton 3 times on the same string before i was happy with the sound) thanks to your videos I finally can tell what is the reason behind those strange noises... btw I would like to ask you what is the song that plays at the end of the video? I really love it... i found out it is also playing at the beginning of the video always. Thank you! I think i will take a lesson from you soon... you know a loooooot about music and gurdies

I am told that as an alternative you could use a sheet of clean computer printer paper the same way. Press the paper against the wheel and keep cranking until the paper gets too hot.
Having a chien is mandatory, it's actually the 50% of the instrument, there are traditions like the Galician where the dog was not really used, but it's an exception. The dog is a little piece of wood that causes the caracteristic buzzing rythm of the gurdies, the trompette string lies on the dog and (the same string) it's also attached to the tirant peg. When you tighten the tirant, the string moves closer to the wheel which causes the dog to react faster, so you basically adjust the sensibility of the dog with the tirant. The buzzing sound you hear is the dog foot taping into the bone plate or the top, you can't see it but the dog lifts and hits the plate The dog is fixed by introducing its "tail" inside the bridge slot but nothing else holds the piece in place, just the bridge slot and the pressure of the trompette string

Nice sitar, I ventured into sitar and traditional indian music many years ago, but found the sitar to be too big of a nightmare to keep in tune. So here I am now, venturing into the world of hurdy gurdy- it's less frustrating, but still a painus in the anus. I guess you can imagine what I'm doing watching this video- my gurdy sounds like shit currently. It goes from one night sounding.... decent? To sounding like ass the next minute. There is an art to applying rosin, and cotton, and I have yet to master that art.

Pretty sure I want to continue with this instrument, but was unable to justify the price tag on one from a reputable luthier for my first gurdy. Absolutely the cheapest commercially available. Yes, I spent money on a Galloping Gurdy. After 72 hours, I've got it sounding like an instrument atleast. A nice instrument? No. But able to carry a tune to some degree. If anything, I've discovered that I can pick up tunes by ear, and play it, so I figure it has inspired me enough to save a bit more money in the future and get one from a reputable maker. Thing I'm struggling with the most currently is cottoning the strings and getting my rosin levels in harmony. The craftsmanship is pretty poor, but I knew it wasnt going to be perfect by any means.

How would you use 99% alcohol to remove rosin from a wheel. I want to try liquid rosin since I have a synthetic wheel rather than a wooden wheel
