    That final scene at 45:07 makes Hook so badass. He's staring death in the face and doesn't flinch. He had that speech planned well in advance, saving it just for this moment on the verge of ultimate defeat. He knew it would unnerve Pan. So cool.

      The perfect trap. And when he actually accepted his challenge and grow up, it completely stabilized Neverland and almost doomed hook himself and the crew anyway. Tim Curry is at his best in this scene and the animation is quality. This is the version of Captain Hook I remember more so than the Disney version. This one has class, menace, and layers.

    Tim Curry you are a National Treasure. You know, it's terrible what happened to him, he deserved to retire on his own terms; not by some accident of nature.
    For those of you who have missed this Curry suffered a stroke several years back and so that combined with him already being pretty old at the time has forever crippled him. He still acts but he does smaller parts and is pretty much just a shell of his former self. It is a sad sad thing to happen to such a one-in-a-million talent, who has entertained generations of audiences of many ages and in many different properties and media

    I thought it was just a kids show. Yet this scene (44:40 - 46:25) shows a complex and mature theme to the audience as it was trying to question Peter Pan's dilemma to remain an immortal without an essential life and point, neither being a youth or a man. The fact that Pan could take his life meaned the end of Hook's miserable and weary experience, as well as the pirate's final rest, while Pan would endure eternity without experiencing age and death. Maybe this is the reason of being one of the known series worldwide, aside from Tim Curry voicing Hook.

There's a whole episode where Billy Jukes and Slightly work together, which reveals Billy Jukes is essentially a kid who ended up in the wrong crowd while trying to find a family. The two also realize the tragedy of being stuck in a war between their two factions.

    46:31 The perfect catch 22. James Hook WINS with whatever decision Peter makes. He brings that knife to the rope and ends Hook's life, he is still stuck eternally as a boy. Further, the lost boys see their leader actually take a life, even if that life is Captain Hook's. It means the end of his innocence. Perhaps even Wendy and her siblings may ask to leave Neverland as the result. He spares Hook, and their deadly game goes on for eternity. It's the equivalent of the dilemma Batman has with the joker. And what's worse is he doesn't spare Hook because it's the right thing to do. He spares Hook because he wants to prove him wrong. It's an unspoken challenge, and he takes it up and almost destroys Neverland in the process. What makes this speech so devastating is that this notorious liar is telling the truth about himself and about his nemesis. And the truth is just as sharp as that knife. The look of fear and astonishment on Peter's face as he takes in that revelation that he never contemplated himself, shows how deep under his skin, those words dug. it's like somebody took the blinders off of his eyes and he's seeing his own situation for the first time as a curse rather than a gift.

    I used to love this show. Completely forgotten Hook was voiced by Tim Curry.
    There was an episode that always made me feel sorry for Hook. It's one that ends with a painting of his mother - something clearly very dear to him - getting tossed overboard. He makes a desperate lunge for it but misses it by a hair and it drops down into the waves (no doubt lost/ruined forever).

    You left out the part where Hook faced off against the Grim Reaper and quoted Algernon Swineburne, "At the door of life, by the gate of breath, there are worse things waiting for men than death."
    And bad form on Wendy's part; taking advantage of the pirates' lack of education over wordplay. Wrong doing and in the wrong are not the same. Peter deliberately trespassed on the Jolly Roger and destroyed Hook's harpsichord deliberately because antagonizing him is just a game in Peter's mind. At the very least, due retribution would warrant Moses' Law.

  • @Artisan1979
    @Artisan1979 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Tim Curry got a daytime Emmy award for this role and deservedly so. This version of Captain Hook hits all the right notes and I don't mean his harpsichord, This Hook is layered, forever trapped in the duality of gentleman and pirate as much as his obsession with revenging himself on Peter Pan. Further, that final clip is perfect in how it frames his entire perspective on Peter and on his own life. Peter has him on the ropes and hook is completely defiant and at peace with the notion of his life ending after having lived a full life from childhood to adulthood. His defiance actually unnerves Peter enough, where he just abandoned the idea of killing him off. We actually questioned whether he could be a man or not, and allowing his body to age, not only doomed him, but also nearly all of Neverland. since this magic realm seems intrinsically tied to him not wanting to grow up. Hook almost killed peter pan, and Neverland with a seed of doubt in his mind without a sword withdrawn.

    Hook: "Oh I want revenge boy, but you may keep your weapon so long as you promise not to escape, alright?"

      @@jasoethesentienteyeshapedg4847 Lupin's not exactly a hero or villain. At least not nowadays, he started off in comics as a unrepentant murderer, rapist, and thief, then becomes a comical thief in the animated shows, and then becomes an anti-hero when up against a more devilish criminal. Almost all of them. I've seen nearly every anime since the first Astro Boy and many different forms and stories. I prefer action based ones that present the differences between good and evil rather than romance, harem, or slow paced slice of life types of anime.

      @@tayojones9460 Don't get snippy with me, Tayo. I know what a character arc is, the problem is Ventress wasn't much of a villain and she was a piss poor "hero" as well. I want to present heroes and villains as an ideal opposites of what they should be and not the endless shades of grey formed by anti-heroes and anti-villains that pollute the internet and are sucked up to by fans these days in an attempt to feel nuanced or wise. Ventress was never complex, she was always a pawn in a game whether by the Jedi or the Sith where she could never win and then she just quit the game by running.
