ስለ overnight deposit and loan ጋ ባደረከው ገለፃ ባንኮች NBE ላይ deposit ሲያደርጉ 15-3%=12% ነው ምክንያቱም ከ target nominal interest rate +(-)3% ነው ህጋቻው!! Logically it's acceptable,because NBE wouldn't agree to give deposit rate as of proportional to the overnight lending rate.

Very great analysis, Geme. Bravo! Jabaadhu! By the way, i do not think this directive brings an intended impact for Ethiopia now. Our economy is short of money supply and there is huge demand fir borrowing kind. Do you think banks have surplus liquidity to lend to each other beyond their customers' demands on top of complying with liquidity rules? In my view, NBE shall first inject money into the market or to the banks as they are liquidity drained already. Even though this would have an impact on inflation, it is a wise approach this time as the economy is slowing down and businesses are not operating as much as expected.

Plus it is important to consider the liquidity challenge this year was mostly evident on few banks that were aggressively lending money and not maintaining the required Loan to deposit ratio.

Can you confirm the rate for overnight deposit? You said it is 18%, the same as the lending rate. If it is so, it’s not going to work. The way policy target is set is as a mid pint between the over night deposit and lending rates; the deposit rate is the lower bound. So, the deposit rate has to be 3 % below!!! Please check
What is the impact of NBR on saving interest rate?
For now there will be no change since the inflation rate is still higher. Bur in the future or in the perfect market state it will surely determine the saving rate because it will become an alternative source of lending fund (But as i said for now the regulation specifically stated there will be no connection)

The idea is to create a variable interest rate having the NBR as a base that will change variably (This will really induce the interest of lenders as it perfectly hedge against inflationary trends)

DBE is a policy bank so that won't be applicable on them. First of all DBE does not engage in the interbank lending business since they are charging very much less interest rates. But with the inflation rate reducing they might issue money market instruments or bonds on the capital market to raise capital.

@@habtamuhailu8347 That depends on the Banks goal when giving loans to employees. If it is merely for motivation purposes the bank might incur some losses and give the loan with less interest rate.but if the bank aims to make some profit from the transaction it might affect the rate
