Fabulous! Our Joan never failed to deliver. Her "Sempre libera" is the greatest of the 20th century. She uses a combination of Tetrazzini's and Melba's ornaments for the 12 staccato high Cs and the rising/falling cascade of scales! No other soprano comes close to this astonishing singing!
June 6th, 1975 (I believe) Violetta - Joan Sutherland Alfredo - John Alexander Germont - Cornell MacNeil Flora - Jean Kraft Gastone - Douglas Ahlstedt Baron Duphol - Arthur Thompson Marquis D'Obigny - Frederick Burchinal Dr. Grenvil - Edmond Karlsrud Annina - Ann Florio Giuseppe - Lou Marcella Gardener - Peter Sliker Conductor - Richard Bonynge
Simply fabulous. Thanks so much for posting. This was one of her greatest roles and a favourite too. The emotion in the voice dispels all of her critics and the technical control is fantastic. Superb supporting cast also.
Hi there! I just want to ask a serious question. Could you tell me how you acquired this footage? I understand that this is from the Metropolitan Opera's first ever Japan Tour in 1975, where they performed La Traviata together with La Boheme, and Carmen. Any information would help, thanks!
