I tuned 16 in the fall of 1985 & one of the most vivid memories of that time was when the lead-singer in my high school band went to Farm Aid & saw Sammy play with Eddie for the first time. We were all pretty excited to hear the next Van Halen album with Sammy singing, and when it dropped mid-winter of ‘86 it didn’t disappoint.

Eddie was King in the 80's and still is. I was in a Cover Band during College, 1985. Yeah a Hair Band and we had the best guitar player in the city. We played why can't this be love and i played a Seq Circuits Prophet 5 and a Juno 106. that was probably the funnest song to play...ABACAB was 2nd. Man, those were the days, Cable, MTV, ESPN. The 80's were The Golden Age for Rock and Roll & Live Music. What the Brothers did to Michael Anthony is despicable, bur alas...RIP Edward. Dance the Night Away.
I have more respect for Sammy and his time with VH now more than ever. I didn't like Van Hagar's music after Roth but the more I learn about this bloke, the more I respect his motif, energy and outlook on life. He really he blessed and grateful for all of his success.
I couldn't agree more with you. I preferred early Van Halen, but we can't argue with the success they had with Hagar. I also believe he (& Michael Anthony) were the nicest members of the band.
Even if he lies ? I've read his book and he never told everything that happened to him and used his book to unfairly crucify the Van Halen brothers . He never tells you how Konami used his Can't Drive 55 song in their RIDGE RACER 4 videogame TV commercial BUT he crucified the Halen Bros for selling songs for TV commercials . He finger points at the Halen Bros for only being about making money . Who's doing a cash-grab rip-off elevator music version FAKE tribute of Eddie Van Halen . And contrary to what Dan Rather says in this video , Sam can't sell albums like he did before and after he joined Van Halen .
@@user-rt9zq8rs9k geez, get the knives out. Few are moving many actual units in any format these days. And they cut Sammy loose in a pretty down period of their lives. And they paid hard for it for probably a decade.
Say what you want, I love both Van Halen's for different reasons. They both are a status of my childhood, teen years, young adult years. But I will say this, above all else, of all the versions of Van Halen, and of all of the music from both versions, one thing can be said for the Sammy version, is that they wrote and recorded, "Humans Being" in 1995. That has to be one of the single most coolest songs the 90s and the Van Halens, had given us. Something about how Eddie made that "tornado" guitar solo, going from a light storm to chaos and Sammy's hard vocals and just the entire sound and vibration of that song was an exciting time for me. Of course, with that being said, the David years did give us one of the greatest rock albums in history - Fair Warning in 1981. So there's that.
Thank you so much for sharing! What a guy! I always loved Sammy as a solo artist, but with Van Halen they reinvented the wheel of creating great albums (not Hit singles as many bands do or chase). Tons of stuff I didn't know from his personal life...wow! Refreshing! Thank you again for sharing it!!!!
That was a very special interview Dan.Thank You.Sammy you are one of the greatest down to earth giving humble human beings not to mention one of the best vocalist of all time.God Bless Both of You and Your Families.
After a 10 hour drive from north of Germany back to Stockholm. My wife and the children went to bed. It was in july or august. A warm night. So I put on the new album of Van Halen. The week before we visited Amsterdam. So I bought some grams of the local lets say tobacco. So I stopped "Poundcake" and went to my car and picked up my buyings from Amsterdam, it was around 1 in the night. Sat down outside with earphones after inhaling and listen to the whole record 3 times. Totally stunned. I still feel that its a masterpiece. I have the same happines and joy Sammy has. I am 63. I have 3 daughters. Soon the second grandchild comes. As Sammy I do not like to be drunk. Life is about growing and loving.
The debate between who is better- Dave or Sammy- Dave was one of the greatest frontmen but Sammy was a better singer. Two different talents. Both icons in my opinion.
Sammy was a better singer, was a showman in his own right and could play guitar (freeing Eddie to play keyboard). Dave was the ultimate showman, brought comic relief to the band and his mediocre voice really worked in this rock genre. Van Halen and Van Hagger were like just two different bands but, push comes to shove, got to go with early VH with Dave.
Dave was more important to van halen. He was a genius businessman. And he was near perfect for those first 4 albums. Not a debate. This is historical fact.
@@scottbaker4890mediocre voice 😂 I actually prefer Sammy but you obviously aren't a singer. Man had an incredible range, literally top 1% of men. And he could throat sing and hit screams 99% of vocalists couldn't dream of.
Thank you, Sammy, for your honesty, your heart and for being who you are. You're a precious guy and I love you for having the courage to just be real in front of us all. Thank you for pouring out the truth. God bless you and your family.
In my opinion, their was jealousy towards Sammy because he was just such a happy and positive guy, all the time and the reason for the spit. They resentedvhim for that alone. I've seen both Sammy and Dave front VH live in concert, both are great, but different. I will say the best rock concert I ever saw was with Sammy fronting VH in Vancouver, Canada at the Pacific Coliseum in October 2004. Man oh man, they blew the frickin roof off that hockey rink that night. Just an amazing show. Song after song. Hit after hit. RIP Eddie. 😊
You would be the first positive review I’ve read of the 2004 shows. I saw them in Greensboro, NC on the opening night… after coming off a long deployment to Iraq… and they sounded atrocious I don’t think they did a sound check that day. You couldn’t hardly tell what song they were playing . Sone of that was due to Eddie half ass playing certain songs making them unrecognizable. Like Humans Being But people also had no clue of the disaster that was already taking place before things even kicked off
@@MyVideos-fm7ugThat was a weird tour. I thought that’s when Dave was going to come back. I think the fans were ready for Dave in 2004, and Sammy was a mild disappointment. At least that’s what I remember.
Great interview with Sammy, Dan, his new song “Inner Child” brought me to tears, I’m trying very late in life to start singing and it’s EXACTLY what I want to do…shine my Inner Child for the World 🌎‼️❤️💯
I found it pretty hard to believe when Eddie Van Halen said Sammy's work ethic sucked. Sammy made that band better. Better as businessmen, better at marketing, and honestly I feel like Eddie's guitar work got better too. If you listen to Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, you can see the creativity in every fill he made. Sammy is a really easy guy to get along with and every person that has met him will tell you that. I think that Eddie is too stubborn and full of ego to play with Sammy again after he wrote his book. Unfortunately the truth hurts. Get over it.
Sammy will say the same thing. He and Eddie were best friends and the band was firing on all cylinders. Then Eddie had hip replacement surgery and the pain meds got the best of him. Became a totally different man. Thank God Eddie kicked it, but it was too late with he and Sammy.
@@billwhitman4125Eddie's hip surgery came during the failed reunion with Roth, not during Sammy's tenure. Eddie had other substance abuse challenges. Thankfully, he cleaned up for his final years.
Rockstars have big egos. David Lee Roth, Eddie. Those guys are great at what they do or did and let's face it artists no matter whether it's music or other art, they are hard to get along with usually hard to work with but awesome in their own way and that's just the way it is. I love the old Van Halen yeah David Lee Roth I'm sure was a dick and is but he is the man and the best front man ever for Van Halen.
This was really great and i learned alot of things here, dan rather really dug deep and sammy went right there with him 😎👌 love van halen bith with dave and sammy and i still listen to it in my current playlist.
I LOVE those first 6 albums. Edward changed the trajectory of my life and I am a musician today because of him. But Sammy really reinvigorated the band and especially Ed. 5150 stands right up with the DLR albums and I personally think it’s got some of Edward’s best guitar playing ever. The intro riff to Summer Nights and the intro riff to 5150 are absolutely amazing. And that tour was probably their best one. Seeing them in ‘86 is a highlight of my youth. And the Live Without A Net VHS cassette perfectly encapsulates the band during that time; just pure joy and just kicking ass on all levels. When Carnal Knowledge and Live: Right Here Right Now came out, you could tell the bloom was coming off the rose. Ed’s addiction was really getting a hold of him. And as someone in recovery I burned a lot of bridges and hurt a lot of people during those dark days.
It takes so much guts to be publicly open and vulnerable. Honest, humble and self introspective. Thanks Sammy for all that you’ve given the world. I’m going to hug my kids tomorrow another time, encourage them another time, show them extra love, and that’s on you.
I love Sammy Hagar the person that he is being rich and giving back to the community and people in need because he loves to help people his talent himself all round amazing person!!♥️ Love you Sammy!!
Great interview as always Mr. Rather. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Mr. Haggar and how really genuine and humble person that he really is. I really think you would have to have seen them in their prime with both singers to make that distinction, I only saw them live with Sammy but have seen Dimond Dave solo on a few occasions and Dave really new how to put on a great show so it's a tuff call
I have loved Sammy Hagar from the first song I ever heard Montrose, absolute mastery of progressive rock with beautiful instruments, song content, and rhythm Rock and Roll that influenced other guitar legends to learn to play. Through his solo career before 55, after that a legendary rocker. Love his," inner child" reflection, heart, and business mind, great human. And should consider being President, love him that much , great man.
Great guy. Great singer. Great front-man. Great entertainer. Great business man. Great attitude. Can't say enough about Sammy. Love and respect the man. Salute.
I just fell upon this interview. I knew little to nothing of this man. I am impressed! This is an great interview! It's inspiring. I especially like the drive with, "uncle Dan" and, ... Sharing the wealth with those less fortunate. Carry on, Mr Hagar!
Roth had explained the NO BROWN M&M’s thing was to be sure that the concert promoters were actually reading the contract. When you’re performing all over the country at a zillion venues. Some of them have rickety old stages and bad electrical issues. It is an issue of safety for the band and if they walked into their dressing room and there was a bowl of M&M’s with all of the brown ones removed. They knew that they had actually read the contract.
Love 🎸Sammy. Van Halen Band was elevated when he joined them , to bad Eddie had problems, that was sad, R.I. P. Eddie you were the best.. I’ve been a huge fan forever. On 5150 half the songs were written for Roth ... Sham stepped into a very well oiled machine, fueled by Roth for a decade.
Dan is a closet Rocker . Great interview. ❤
Ive always been a fan of Sammy but this interview had me respecting him even more! So easy going and he looks fantastic!!!!
Beyond great! What a great musician/person
Man.... what a killer interview. Dan asked some great questions... really well done here. 👍👍👍 I would love Rick Beato to do one of these.
Very impressed by Sammy's humble nature..How can you not love this guy.He deserves every bit of success and happiness.
What a good guy !!!! Always love watching interviews with him !!!! ❤
Awesome individual! Genuine n down to earth!
STOP IT, LITTLE PEOPLE, WITH SAYING 'VAN HAGAR'
I couldn't agree more with you. I preferred early Van Halen, but we can't argue with the success they had with Hagar. I also believe he (& Michael Anthony) were the nicest members of the band.
Same. Sammy is one of my favorite people, but I only listen to the DLR VH. This is probably the best interview I have seen with him.
I’ve seen Sammy with VH, with Chickenfoot, with the Circle, numerous times. A true class act. Just simply a decent human being . Great interview.
I was a dj at the u of iowa in 1973 when 1st Montrose's lp and fell in love with Ronnie's band. And the second lp wuth Sammy.
This is historical fact.
both are great, skyscraper is an awesome album.. and sammy is a legend
Sammy, we love you man!
RIP Eddie. 😊
Sammy also an egotistical and cheesy and has annoying raspy voice Kurt Cobain has a better rasp
You would be the first positive review I’ve read of the 2004 shows. I saw them in Greensboro, NC on the opening night… after coming off a long deployment to Iraq… and they sounded atrocious
I don’t think they did a sound check that day. You couldn’t hardly tell what song they were playing . Sone of that was due to Eddie half ass playing certain songs making them unrecognizable. Like Humans Being
But people also had no clue of the disaster that was already taking place before things even kicked off
@@MyVideos-fm7ugThat was a weird tour. I thought that’s when Dave was going to come back. I think the fans were ready for Dave in 2004, and Sammy was a mild disappointment. At least that’s what I remember.
Great interview with Sammy, Dan, his new song “Inner Child” brought me to tears, I’m trying very late in life to start singing and it’s EXACTLY what I want to do…shine my Inner Child for the World 🌎‼️❤️💯
The end when Sammy said that about his father just broke my heart into! I'm so sorry Sammy
Dec 2023: Thanks for your candid interview Sammy. The best to you and your family! KATE
Sammy is a legend. He is a genuine human being who is the real deal. I love his sense of gratitude and humbleness.
@aaronabeytia I saw an interview where Sammy said Eddie got hooked on pain meds after a surgery. I assumed it was the hip.
It's actually not hard to believe. Cocaine is one hell of a drug.
Sammys voice was the best its ever been in Van Halen.. i saw all 5 tours with sammy..
What a classy guy. Music aside, Sammy the person is a very admireable human being. His head is in the right place.
This was really great and i learned alot of things here, dan rather really dug deep and sammy went right there with him 😎👌 love van halen bith with dave and sammy and i still listen to it in my current playlist.
Thank you for all the great music and entertainment you have given me for the last 40+ years!!!
He says he is not a smart guy shore has talent the tunes he wrote outstanding
They got the year wrong. VH first show with Sammy Hagar in Shreveport was in 1986.
It takes so much guts to be publicly open and vulnerable. Honest, humble and self introspective. Thanks Sammy for all that you’ve given the world. I’m going to hug my kids tomorrow another time, encourage them another time, show them extra love, and that’s on you.
Best interview Rather ever did!
What an amazing genuine guy. This is a great blue print on how to handle success.
Sammy has been the epitome of a gentleman rock star ever since I was a kid. He’s just a human that we are all blessed to be living the same time as.
Sammy is ĵust a great guy!! Long live the Red Rocker❤❤
Sammy deserves every bit of success he's achieved.
I love Sammy Hagar the person that he is being rich and giving back to the community and people in need because he loves to help people his talent himself all round amazing person!!♥️
Love you Sammy!!
The original Montrose album was one of the greatest. Ronnie Montrose was underrated imho.
That whole album just rocked all the way through.
One of my all time favorites. People I encourage all of you to listen to it. One amazing track after another.
Great interview as always Mr. Rather. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Mr. Haggar and how really genuine and humble person that he really is. Even learnred more about Vam Halen breaking up and what actually happened with Eddie. And answering aome questions i had. Recently found out after watching Howard Stern show. Joe Satriani is filling in on a possible Eddie Van Halen tribute tour. I will definitely going to see them if everyone is able to agree and make it happen. Much love from New Orleans
Thank you for posting this.
How does he not age... No one from the 60s and 70s looks like him. You can still go out and Rock!
I agree with the exception of Rick Springfield. I saw a current picture of him (he is something like 73) and he looks amazing too!
@@jerryjohnson9531I think Rick has had some work done, you can see it around his eyes.
I had no clue what a wonderful person Sammy was until this interview.
I liked that "Inner Child" , and that all Koa Taylor 12 string is a gorgeous guitar, looks and tone.what an awesome man Sammy is.
Sammy is an example of what charisma can do for you. He super charismatic and grounded which makes him very likeable by rveryone.people want to be friends with himbecause hes genuinely cool and that has ooened lots of doors for him and he ran with it.
His tequila is outstanding, expensive, but excellent nonetheless.
Hes made more money than god outside the music biz yet he still performs 2 hr shows at 70!
Hes lived the dream and then some.ive been a fan since Montrose so coming up on 50 yrs.
Loved watching him on his path.
Great interviews.
Yes Sam did make VH band better . I will love them for ever .
🤣
I really think you would have to have seen them in their prime with both singers to make that distinction, I only saw them live with Sammy but have seen Dimond Dave solo on a few occasions and Dave really new how to put on a great show so it's a tuff call
I like Sammy better, but Dave was definitely an interesting character.
Red Rocker still rocking! Sammy, i love you ❤. I love the music you have created. after VH. Hope to hear you live someday soon! 🙏
Anybody who doesn't know Sammy Hagars solo work should listen to Standing Hampton. One of my all time favorite albums. There's only one way to rock.
God bless Sammy Hagar 🙏
I have loved Sammy Hagar from the first song I ever heard Montrose, absolute mastery of progressive rock with beautiful instruments, song content, and rhythm Rock and Roll that influenced other guitar legends to learn to play.
Through his solo career before 55, after that a legendary rocker.
Love his," inner child" reflection, heart, and business mind, great human.
And should consider being President, love him that much , great man.
I was touched by this. I have absolutely no success that comes close to his; but, I feel I understand and at my level I've tried to do the same as he.
Thank you both!
this interview was so beautiful, well done
Great guy. Great singer. Great front-man. Great entertainer. Great business man. Great attitude. Can't say enough about Sammy. Love and respect the man. Salute.
Great interview, heartfelt, great guys that seem very down-to-earth! 🥳👏👏👏
I just fell upon this interview. I knew little to nothing of this man. I am impressed! This is an great interview! It's inspiring. I especially like the drive with, "uncle Dan" and, ... Sharing the wealth with those less fortunate. Carry on, Mr Hagar!
Sammy aint just running around and babbling on stage, hes one of the best performers around
Freaking love Sammy. What a guy, I will be seeing him on August 20th in Phoenix
Happy New Year everyone Sammy is awesome!
This was such a memorable interview I was hanging on his every word. I read his book and thought I knew his story but I learned so much more . Dan Rather is an excellent interviewer it was smooth and very thoughtful., I learned a lot about Sammy and life, You’ve made me take a look at my life, career and relationships. you Rock!!! Red Rocker. ❤️🔥
Loved that song at the end Sammy! 😀
I always loved you Sammy keep rocking
Dan The Man, certainly poured a Tall glass of water when he decided to interview Sammy . Great job on both their parts and why there's not A Million Views and Comments on this is mind bending . PEACE ✌️
Nice to hear not all of us had good childhoods but turned out good thsnks you!!!!
Hell I was listening to WLS Chicago from Texarkana Arkansas in 1983.
WLS, we used to listen to that growing up. It's pretty cool to listen on TH-cam to the WLS broadcasts from the 70's and 80's.
Hey Sammy, I didn't all these things about you until today Jan 26, 2024, and I gotta a new respect and liking to you and your mission in life. I heard you say that you believe in God plus everything else you've done with your life and I had a chance to see you many years back in my town, El Paso, Texas during your Cabo Wabo tour and I used to be a die hard VH fan with DLR, but you are blessed and I am thankful for you, your gifts and your overall purpose in life. God bless you and yours!
I am from shreveport and i seen van halen and loved the show wiith sammy.😊😊😊😊
