Such a nice thing to find people who feel the same ... Heinz Zickler, who recently passed away at the age of 103, had studied the organ in Leipzig (his professor was Bach-expert Karl Straube, who was a close friend of Johannes Brahms (!) and Max Reger) always shook his head at the "learned" "historically informed" rendering of Bachs music. Violins being played without vibrato and in a breathess-like short-bow way ... trumpets in a "doo-doo-"way ... And everything in a steeple-chase tempo ...
Therefore: So much gratitude to have this "traditional" rendering of this most wonderful music! God bless!

Karl Richter (15 de octubre de 1926, Plauen - 15 de febrero de 1981, Múnich) fue un organista, pianista, clavecinista, director de orquesta y director de coro alemán. Fue uno de los más grandes intérpretes de Johann Sebastian Bach. Reputado organista de Santo Tomás de Leipzig y de San Marcos de Múnich, en 1953 fundó la orquesta Bach de Múnich, con la que ejecutó con gran éxito obras de Bach y de Händel.
Nació en Plauen y estudió en Dresde y Leipzig, donde se graduó en 1949. Ese mismo año llegó a ser organista en la iglesia de Santo Tomás en Leipzig, la misma iglesia donde tres siglos atrás Johann Sebastian Bach había desempeñado el cargo de director musical. En 1951 se trasladó a Múnich, donde impartió clase en el conservatorio y fue cantor, y organista en la iglesia de San Marcos. A partir de 1954 dirigió el Coro y la Orquesta Bach de Múnich. En los años 1960 y 1970 hizo gran cantidad de grabaciones y realizó giras en Japón, Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética.
Richter interpretó gran variedad de música (desde Schütz a Reger), pero es especialmente recordado por sus interpretaciones de las obras de Bach y Händel. Karl Richter evitó las fluctuaciones en el tempo que fueron características de las interpretaciones románticas de Bach, aunque, por otra parte, usó instrumentos modernos en sus interpretaciones hasta el final de su carrera.
Fiel a ciertos intérpretes, Karl Richter trabajó en numerosas ocasiones con Gundula Janowitz, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Peter Schreier, Edith Mathis, Maurice André y Aurèle Nicolet.
Murió de un ataque al corazón a los 54 años.
En cuanto a los aspectos estilísticos y sonoros de su producción, Richter encarna la transición entre las visiones «románticas» y «barrocas» de la obra del compositor; su versión de la Pasión según San Mateo de Bach es una de las mejores que existen en la actualidad junto a las versiones de Otto Klemperer y la de Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Un cierto expresivismo impregna sus grabaciones, que fueron muy admiradas por Glenn Gould y Carlos Kleiber.
Su interpretación del primer movimiento del segundo Concierto de Brandenburgo de Bach es la primera selección en el disco de oro de la sonda espacial Voyager.

Invito ad ascoltare in particolare il Coro finale (n°11) : il verso "Lob und Ehre un Preis und Gewalt....." è cantato per intero dal Coro pieno e noi dai solisti, come in ogni altra esecuzione. Eccezionali i Munchener (Coro ed Orchestra), ma gigantesco Herr Richter !
Traumhaft interpretierte Bach-Kantate. Phantastische Solisten, Chor und Orchester und natürlich Karl Richter. Die Nachwelt zehrt davon.

Looking at the ark of Mr Richter’s life, there is magnificent achievement. But passing at only 54 yrs of age, he would have done so much more. I’m certain he, Bach, Handel, and others are , as Bach said “at the place where music originates”.

Ignacio Ponce, sinceramente la emoción intensa y profunda que Karl Richter imprimió en las direcciones de las obras sacras bachianas no las he hallado en otros directores. Sin demeritarlos por este motivo. Solamente que las versiones del mencionado director alemán me calan como ninguna lo hace. Sin lugar a dudas uno de los mayores tesoros musicales que he descubierto hasta ahora; el Bach de Karl Richter.
Habe als Schüler auch noch viel Richter gehört. Heute bin ich sehr froh über die „modernen“ Barockorchester. Im Vergleich sind die alten Interpretationen doch sehr massiv und hölzern bis zackig. Auch die Intonation ist heute besser.

Es tan debil musicalmente que es dificil de entender su fama. No conduce ninguna frase. No respira , golpea todas las notas debiles , no le da aire a ninguna frase . Entiendo que él no tenia como saber de los tiempos barrocos que hoy se conocen y saben. Pero no frasea nada. Pobre Bach.
La prassi esecutiva è un virus dissolvitore che sta uccidendo la musica classica e ha massacrato Bach. Karl Richter ancora adesso rappresenta il punto di riferimento assoluto, l'apice, il fulcro risolutore della musica, del pensiero e dell'umanità bachiana. Sono i cosiddetti 'filologici' che non fraseggiano, per Richer il fraseggio era fondamentale e sempre molto preciso: ' I believe that all music depends on phrasing. That is a phrase proceeds with tension until the middle and after the middle there must be relaxation so that tension can arise again. Every musician has to breathe, not only singers or wind players, but also a pianist or string player. This is the most important thing in interpretation.' He said that many times.
