Canvas Hot Tent Winter Camping In Newfoundland Canada

  • Canvas Hot Tent Camping Vs the Mighty Newfoundland's Extreme Snow Conditions. The deep snow proved to be no issue for the Old Canvas Tent. This was my first time setting up this new canvas tent but it definitely won't be my last time. I was very impressed at how well the tent performed and now I know for certain that this tent will be coming along with me on many of my new adventures in the future. It's a home away from home, warm and cozy.

    That’s like a portable cabin. What a nice set up. I’m more used to a one man bivi just big enough for a sleeping bag and your boots lol. That will be nice for remote moose hunts and fishing trips.

    What a Dandy custom tent. Holy Jeepers you got enough wood in there. lol you must love the heat. Always good to have extra wood. Good call on the stove bottom. The sleeping cot looks familiar. Another great Video.

    If you can get some tea lights (dollar store) and burn them in your cooking pot overnight (for safety) , they should keep that cabin above zero if you have enough. I have a similar setup and for the same reason gave up on the stove overnight - too damn tired to hunt the next day! System I switch to was using tea lights. Each light emits about the same heat as a man, so 4 lights is like having 4 extra bodies in there. In -10c, in a 8x10 tent, 4 tea lights keeps it above zero, and they burn for 4 hours, so you just adjust up or down from there. I just bring 2 sleeping bags and put one inside of the other. Those, in combination with your Coleman lamp, would probably heat the cabin remarkably well without the stove - but would not be sufficient to dry clothes. Great video man, keep em coming!

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LMAO hahahaha Quote "Too Damn tired to hunt the next day" !!!! haha that explains my night perfectly... Too Funny my friend. Great tip I will definitely look into candles... But between you and me, there has to be a stove system that would work where a fellow could get 3-4 hours of solid sleep before having to add wood... Something reasonable in size and weight? I've got to check out those tea lights... Dollar store, here I come. Thanks again !!!

    • @maritimegardening4887
      @maritimegardening4887 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Main reason I had to switch was my sinuses. Love the heat of the stove but was messing me up - I'd be all congested in the morning from the wood stove. The candles and cool air seem more agreeable for sleeping - then you can just fire up the stove in the morning and evenings to get comfy.

    • @maritimegardening4887
      @maritimegardening4887 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got the candle idea from Mors Kochanski. BTW. 1 candle = a man - that's his rule of thumb, and seems to work surprisingly well.

    Nice wall tent Charlie. Yes should definitely get a bigger stove, something you can shut right down, that should hold your fire much better.

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh Jeff, no worries there my buddy. I think that little stove is perfect or certain times of the year but not for winter camping where you want to keep the fire going all night long. I don't function well with that little sleep. Loved the day and evening part of that adventure, but when it came to trying to catch some sleep, it was brutal... Definitely needs something bigger with a stove pipe damper to help control the amount of heat lose, draft and to give you more control over the burn...

    It’s sure a lot of fun staying in the bush in those tents after all the work is done. Very comfortable. Set up a lot of these tents in north Alberta over the years with a outfitter friend, one thing we did different was we had front and rear poles same angle as roof and then the long side rails would sit on those. No vertical poles in corners. Total of 7 poles. The food and beverages always taste better in the bush. Lol. Take care.

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes many tent's can be set up that way but the roof on terry's tents is at a very low pitch so it's not so appealing to look at. But I know exactly what you mean. The side poles rest on the A-frame poles... That's the best looking set-up in my opinion. The way you see a lot of people setting up Terry's Tents is they end up using 11 poles. Two extra on each side tied to the front and back of each side of the front and back A-frames and leaning outwards away from the tent and then the side poles are tied to those extra 4 poles.
      I truly enjoyed the tent, not the sleeping but once I figure out a better sleeping system or stove system it will be much better. And yes, for some reason food and tea is always better in the woods. I'm sure the next time I set it up it will be much quicker and hopefully I will have an extra set of hands to help. Cheers

    I have stayed numerous times in a tent in the winter -39 and - 45 with the wind was the coldest. We stayed comfortable all night but used a orange insulated tarp on the inside of the roof wich holds the heat in. I think inside works best but outside would help as well and a barrel stove out of a 35 gallon barrel. So you can fit big enough slow roaster logs so eliminates every hour stocking. The one night filled it up at 10:30pm and didn't get up till 6am still warm. Took a few times for us to work the bugs out but have it figured now. Not scared of -45!!!

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes now we are talking, I would love to be able to figure something out where I could sleep 7 1/2 hours.... That would be amazing, I'd would practically live in this tent then... I didn't think I've seen an insulated tarp, to set that up on the inside of the tent would take some modifications for sure. (But hey, if it Works) !!! Yes a bigger stove would be lovely. Sure I'd be happy if I could get 2-3 hours of sleep before getting up to fill the stove... It will definitely take me a few times to work out these bugs...

      @NLGhostWolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dan, yes to be perfectly honest, it was my intention to stay up there for multiple nights, I was hoping for 3 at least. However there was no way I was going to stay there after the first night and having to add wood to the stove every hour on the hour.... But I think I am getting closer to selecting my next stove. Once I pull the trigger on the stove I'll let everyone know and probably set up the tent directly behind the house to test out how long I can get out of a full stove full of wood. I would be happy with 3 hours, if I can get close to the 3 hour mark I'll be heading straight out to do more winter camping videos in different locations.

    Hey Charlie, you could take that tent to your cabin build site and leave it there for when you are building your cabin. How is the cabin build coming along? Haven't had any updates on it lately. Would love to sleep out in one of those tents. Looks like fun except the waking up every hour to stoke the stove. How you are feeling ok, as it seems like you have a bit of a cough going on there. Keep safe and stay warm. Tom

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tom, I haven't been working at all on the cabin. I got weathered out this fall and still need to complete the garage. I have footage on the garage but I plan on just doing one video showing the garage from start to finish vs the daily episodes/updates... I watched a few videos on cabin and garage builds that run for dozens of episodes... When folks do that I quickly lose interest and normally only watch a couple of episodes at the beginning and then near the end... (I skip over all the ones in between)...
      It was a lot of fun during the day and evening, truly loved the rustic/primitive atmosphere of the canvas tent with the wood stove, EXCEPT for when it came to bedtime... (Not so much fun then) LOL....
      I'm feeling much better but still cough when I do any amount of exercise or talking... It's a real pain in the butt... It's like having a smokers cough without ever having smoked... PS. Hoping to do some land prep work on the cabin site this spring.

      I was only 1 km behind the house on the first hill/mountain... Far enough away to fully enjoy a wonderful quiet evening and see some wildlife. Even if it was only glowing eyes in the night. Once I find another stove system I will test it right behind the house before heading to far out... But once I have the stove issue worked out I'll be heading up to my cabin site for a few nights. And I also want to do some camping at Grandfathers old cabin site as well.

    I know that knot as the "taut-line hitch". Are you going to put a damper on the stove pipe? Great over-nighter for working out the bugs...

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks on the knot name. Not sure about a damper on the stove pipe with that stove... I think I would need to get a move air tight stove then that little galvanized stove or I might get smoke bleeding into the tent... But I will be trying it out to see if it works. Been watching some hot tent camping videos and there are some very nice steel stoves out there. If you look at the 11:24 minute mark of this video you'll see how they fitted the adapter of the stove pipe to the top of the stove and when the stove gets hot those little gaps seem to expand... Which got me thinking if I would run into smoke problems with those gaps if I install a damper into the stove pipe.??? What's your thoughts on that....

  • @Mike-du4tq
    @Mike-du4tq 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I can't see one in the video but you need an inline stove pipe damper, that will help with the wood consumption & heat regulation, this video is 5 years old now & I just stumbled upon you I'm sure you've figured that out by now.

    Hey, my family was looking into maybe getting a 600 ACE LT, probably 2017 or newer, and so far our research has proven that it seems to be a very reliable sled, good all rounder. But one recurring problem my father found was that it went through belts even faster than the average ski-doo. Like you get stuck and you will smoke your belt trying to get out. But this info was from the 2012 and 2013 models, so I was wondering if you have had any big belt problems or not? Have you even had to change the belt yet? Or has Ski-Doo fixed this issue? All I know is that the newer models (~2015-present) were fitted with an upgraded belt. I would really like your input, thanks.

And a flat top for cooking. Made of 1/8” steel. Works great for us. These thin small boxes aren’t cutout for Canadian outdoors.
