    Great video! I didn't know about the day night signaling devices you mentioned at the end.
    I've recently started hammock camping and I'm wondering where in Pennsylvania you could go hammock camping from a kayak in PA... Or at least how to figure out if that's allowed?

      The signal devices are only needed in Lake Erie, it's a Coast Guard requirement I believe.
      As far as kayak hammock camping in PA, I know that the Allegheny Reservoir has some rentable sites that have good enough trees, and along the Deleware, Susquehanna and Allegheny Rivers have water trails with spots to camp, not sure about the tree situations there though. I'm sure there are other rivers in the state that have water trails too, I just don't know of the top of my head.

      You don't need signaling devices (the law requires 3) in any manually propelled vessel, so canoes and kayaks are exempt as long as you don't put a motor on them. That exemption also applies to sailboats less than 26' long and all boats less than 16' long. Of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't have a signalling device in some places, just that you're not required to. In Lake Erie you could potentially end up miles from shore, and on the Susquehanna there are places where you can be 3/4 of a mile from either shore. At distances like that, especially when the shoreline might be unpopulated where you are, it's certainly possible that you could end up in a situation where a signalling device that's better than a modest flashlight would be useful.
      As for hammock camping, if it's legal to camp and not illegal to use trees as anchors then you should be able to hang a hammock. There are plenty of places that prohibit tying ropes to trees, but I doubt that the legal definition of "rope" includes straps. 1" nylon webbing is cheap and readily available. If you don't have to carry it too far seat belt or 2" webbing is even better, and might mean the difference between a warning and a ticket if some ranger does wander by and take exception to your hammock.

      From the PA Fish and Boat website regarding Visual Signals "Paddlers should be aware of Visual Distress Signals requirements and their use if they operate on a federally controlled water like Lake Erie.", The full information can be found here: www.fishandboat.com/Boat/Pages/Paddlesports.aspx

    Yeah, as I read the regs, a canoe only needs the sticker in State Park waters. Came to realize the boat launch on the Allegheny I use is considered a State Park.
    So, you don't need it to be ON the river, but you need it to put in or take out.

      I think that's the same for other rivers as well.

      Pretty decent, mine is about 5 years old so I'm not sure if their seat technology has changed.

    Can anyone tell me about County parks? We have DCNR launch permits, for our kayaks. We were told something different is needed for county parks, is this true?

    • @KurtZitzelman
      @KurtZitzelman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could be true depending on the park. County parks are not required to honor a DCNR or Fish and Boat Launch Permit as that particular county owns the land around the lake and are solely responsible for maintaining it without help from the state. Your best bet would be to contact the park in question or the county in which it is located.

    That was a great tutorial Kurt. The state has to make $$$ somehow.

      Thanks Warren! Actually yes, the state maintains the ramps, accesses and some lakes partly with the money earned from use/launch permits. There is a lot of push back from some who feel that they are being ripped off by needing a sticker. What I've noticed is that some states who don't require permits do require day use access fees for parks and launches. You pay for it one way or the other.

    I also wanted to comment on the PFD under the bungie cords. One of the best reasons for a good PFD is so that it's comfortable enough that you'll wear it, but when a PFD is stowed it's required to be easily accessible. Tucked under a a bungie cord or two is okay, but they should never be tied to anything. That's a violation, and could get you ticketed.
    I'll also suggest that anyone who thinks that they'll stow their PFD and just grab it if they need it should try putting one on while they're already in the water. Not to mention the possibility that yo might be injured and/or separated from the PFD if you unexpectedly find yourself in the water.

    • @KurtZitzelman
      @KurtZitzelman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, a PFD should never be stowed away where it is in accessible, not only is is illegal but dangerous.
