Brilliantly nice edge, Bird. I know this is an old video but I’ve been collecting for a few years now and finally got a KME system. I’ve been watching your KME videos for advise. Thanks for all the info!
Look...I have a flip phone, that I usually leave at home...and am using a Lansky system with the jig. I know the KME is way better....but my life is simpler and I am present at all times wherever I am. I am the only person that I know who can say that. :-) Truly.. My knives are sharp enough...but, I do have too many...no doubt.... Happy New Year, ALL!
When you finish off with the 0.1 micron strop, are you stropping at the full bevel angle or decreasing it a little bit? Full progression here was 50 - 1500 grit diamonds, then 9 to 0.1 micron lapping films, and finally finishing with just the one 0.1 micron strop? Thanks!
I'm a little late guys sorry but enjoyed it. Also wife got me a kme for Christmas so I was really interested in seeing your results. Let us know what you get on the sharpness tester after you strop some more
One request for first video of 2019. Please ask Frankie to insert multiple inappropriate innuendos. That is all! Have a great one and thanks for the content,
L o l, thanks you two! A KME edge, for the new year! On these longer re-profile/ sharpenings. I always camp out in front of the big screen, and take in a movie, during. : - )
You should submit boombalaty to the spelling bee competition folks. Would trick everybody. Love this channel and all the antics. Looking forward to a new year full of more amazing content
Bird & Frankie, do you guys do micro bevels on your mirror edge knifes? What do you think about micro bevels? By micro bevel I mean after your have mirror edge - you increase your angle by 4-5 degree and use 1000 grit stone and do 3-5 light passes which creates toothy edge on the knive.
Kme has their convex attachment also. Makes the kme best overall i think.. Convex 3v knives thick at the spine are annoying to actually keep convexed on stones
for the new year: may all your blades be sharp, may all your folders 'clack', may your pug never fart, and "haters" don't mean jack....love to all and a jolly NEW YEAR !!!:)
I got my KME a few days ago, I just recently got the Base, the pen knife pro jaws (for getting that sweet sweet 15 DPS edge), and the 50 grit "beast" stone, I made my own strops for it, I got a 5 micron one, 3 micron one, 1.5 micron, 0.5 micron, 0.25 micron, and then I finish and bare horse butt leather and I'm getting some damn scary sharp edges, definitely sharper than anything I've ever had. Is there anything I should get for those mirror finishes? I was thinking about one of the translucent Arkansas stones to use after the 1500 grit diamond, other than that I'm not sure. I will be getting the stone thickness compensation add on, the unicorn horn for serrations, is there anything else I need? Thanks
fullfire0 you can get a 12 degree edge on most knives without the pen knife jaws watch dean o video on it it’s called sharpening beyond 17 degrees on the kme
the translucent Arkansas stone is roughly 1800 grit and is a nice progression from the 1500 diamond. It starts to get pretty reflective after the translucent. The Thickness compensator is really nice to have
Yeah, I've seen that. The only thing is I have some smaller knives, especially kitchen knives, that I figured it'd be nice to have. I figure It'll make life easier, I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Besides I didn't pay cash for it, I had store credit so it was a nice free add-on @@bp-hx9ts
That's about equally as fine as when I hand polish fiber optic connectors. .5 micron diamond lapping film is pretty common as a final although there is the option of .1 micron film. So, you are definitely doing the most here. 2 hours though, WOW! To be fair to Frankie, I am a full sized man with the exact same knife, except with the other blade.
You can go smaller than 0.1 lapping film. I believe the smallest is 0.01. So if you really wanna go as sharp as theoretically possible, that's where it's at
LOLOLOLOLOL.................Get real. !0,000 stone and a strop gets you a deadly sharp straight razor. So what does you really thing a 0.1 or 0.01 lapping film really going to get you. A sushi knife, arguably one of the sharpest kitchen knives out there doesn't use lapping film.
Nice edge on that, ive been wanting to do my own sharpening but I have not bought anything to do it yet. Not to sure what to go with yet to do it. 👍🏼👍🏼👊
Mr. Stabby if I sharpened a lot of knives like as a pro knife sharpener I would freehand or use a power system like a tormeck faster kme is great though
Finishing with a clean leather hanging strop (no compound) will improve your numbers further but if you see more than a 20 point improvement, your edge isn't stable.
Do you guys have a SHTF set up, or just a power outage kit or anything of that sort. Id like to see that as a video if you guys haven't done it already.
Awesome video! Loving this type of content! I just had a quick question about sharpening, if you don’t mind? I’ve got a KME myself and I’m able to achieve really sharp and quite reflective edges with it. I can’t quite seem to get, the full mirror effect that you do though I normally: progress through the diamond stones, then go to a black/translucent Arkansas (use an angle cube to adjust for stone thickness), then to a 4 micron followed by a 1 micron CBN strop. Is it possible to get a full mirror edge with stropping? Or do I really need to get the lapping films, to achieve that? I just want to take my edges to that next level and I’m not sure what the best way to go about that is. Whether it be; more strops, or moving over to using some films? Thanks!
I have an edge pro, not KME but the 8000 grit shapton stone gives it a mirror finish. The 1000 grit does not. I don't have any stones in between but I imagine a 3000 grit would give a mirror
Bird I've had my KME and got it on your recommendation. I have really enjoyed it and it does amazing edges. I don't have the films only the kangaroo strop with 4 micron emulsion. And while I can get just about a mirror edge. I can't quite get that full mirror look. If you had to chose 1 pack of films to suggest/use what would it be? I'm just trying to save as much money as possible. Really appreciate any feedback and I am a huge fan!
The shine isn't necessarily indicative of sharpness. Aluminum oxide can produce a better shine even at a coarser grit but it tends to draw out a microscopic wire edge that isn't stable and can't reliably produce BESS scores below 100. I'm curious. What angle are you sharpening at to produce an edge like that?
BirdShot IV lol yeah if you refined your scratch pattern further but no real point in going that high polish already totally mirrored still wondering if that could whittle a hair though probably

Hey happy new year's guy. What was the name of that little knife frankie handed you with the d2 steal? Looked like a nice little flipper
Bro, you already know your edge is like a money shot.
lol thanks Felix

the next step after the 1500 grit would be the 9 Micron lapping film, 1800 grit. Then finish with your 4CBN and you'll have a pretty reflective finish
Okay I'll give that a shot much appreciated. And I'll make sure that if I do end up pulling the trigger on anything I'll use your links if possible.
