Yes, he is right up there. Mark Waugh too. However, the top most elegance mixed with excitement was by far Mohammad Azharuddin! That guy was something else even in ‘angry mode’, the way he would step out and dispatch spinners. 😮😊
I would suggest that Gary Sobers was as elegant a left handed batsman as anyone, he averaged over 58 runs/test innings, who could also produce 3 types of bowling, fast, swing and spin, he was also a quite brilliant fielder and not a bad captain either.
Wow...just brilliant...I have only seen Saeed Anwar look that elegant while batting and scoring hundreds....but this video showed that David Gower belongs to the same category of charismatic batsmen....
@@tattushenoi I agree to qlmost all of them but my favourite most elegant batsmen were Mark Waugh, Damien Martyn, Azhar, Laxman , Lara, Sangakara, Saeed Anwar and Aravinda de Silva....
*In the era of paper-thin bats and extra large boundaries where bowlers like Lilly, Thompson, Imran, Headly, and the Marshall, Holding, Abmrose ruled the uncured pitches, Gower was in league and class of his own.*
Us with convict heritage never liked seeing that bloke hangin' round with a bat in his hand! Great batsman and a good Pom. Ashes have always been the pinnacle of Test Cricket in Oz.Win or Lose.
2:03 "Gower playing shots already" You can tell it's a different era. At the first scoring shot we see in this video, the score is 172/3. By the time Gower is playing shots "already", the score is 228/3, so the commentator's saying that it's unusual to be playing shots when the partnership is a mere 56.
Salute to a Tenacious resilient David Gower. Also his batting opening partner Graham Gooch! He Gooch would stay at the wicket for an entire innings. Not a prolific scorer, but good on Defense.
LOL, just watched the corresponding Mike Atherton video from the same innings. Gower called him through for a suicidal single when Atherton was on 95 and Atherton was run out by a good foot, but the umpire didn't give it. No third umpire in those days.
Amazing to think that it was only a year or so after this that Gooch called time on his test career. Gooch was a great captain and batsman but i’ve never forgiven him for this. Gower scored 850 odd runs in his last 3 series at an average of 50 plus! Gooch had a problem with Gower, nothing to do with form or ability.
Could never relax watching him play. Was a class player with wonderfully elegant stroke play but he had an almost self destructive tendency to waft outside the off stump.
Me, an American, asking an English friend (2009): “Oh, man, what about Gower??” “Ahh, it was just, lovely shot, beautiful shot, OUT. It was awful..” 😂😂😂
This was a meaningless innings in a doomed high scoring draw. A far superior Gower innings was his even 100 the previous test of same series, in Melbourne, which put England in control at the half-way point, the completion of both teams' first innings, England starting the 3rd at 0 for +46.
Did you go and make a cup of tea when Alderman was bowling to him, and Gower was dispatching him to the boundary on a regular basis? I am guessing you must have done.
I never seen such a most elegant batsman in the world
Saeed Anwar, yovrag 6x6’s
100%. A very calm, effortless batsman. He had a very clean and easy looking technical stroke play, but effective. So lovely to watch him. ❤
Elegant indeed.
Yes, he is right up there. Mark Waugh too. However, the top most elegance mixed with excitement was by far Mohammad Azharuddin! That guy was something else even in ‘angry mode’, the way he would step out and dispatch spinners. 😮😊
Nor have I. Made batting look so effortless.
The criticism of him was deserved but when he got going he was in a class all on his own.
We will not see cricket shots played like Gower this man was the definition of batting timing and effortless.
Man, those back foot cover drives. He was completely in the zone. They are smashed!
No more beautiful sight in cricket than Gower
David Gower was a poetic stroke maker ❤
His timing was beautiful to see
Back in the day as an Irish man living in London , Gower was my all time favourite sportsman. When Gower got out I switched off.
@seaniek9175
What does your nationality or where you lived have to do with anything? Odd.
Gower and Lara the 2 best lefties the world has ever seen. Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Even from belonging to Pakistan you have forgotten your own left handed champion and one of the most elegant batsman in the world i.e. Saeed Anwar...
My two favourite players growing up, but can we add K Sangakarra? One of the greats of 21st century.
I would suggest that Gary Sobers was as elegant a left handed batsman as anyone, he averaged over 58 runs/test innings, who could also produce 3 types of bowling, fast, swing and spin, he was also a quite brilliant fielder and not a bad captain either.
@@tiredofhangingaround Absolutely!
Don't forget Graeme Pollock.
South Africa's legendary left-hander.
Wow...just brilliant...I have only seen Saeed Anwar look that elegant while batting and scoring hundreds....but this video showed that David Gower belongs to the same category of charismatic batsmen....
Anwar was never elegant. Gower Azhar Laxman Waugh Lara Kalicharan are elegant. But depends on personal taste.

@@sudhanshumitra1989 martin and desilva had great timing. But did not have that lazy swing of the bat.
Wonderful player
Makes it look so easy! 😍
A thing of beauty BEHOLD
He never hit the ball… just charmed it to the boundary
I love that leg flick👌
most elegant left hander
What a batsman! Wow!😮
My first sporting hero younger than myself . . .

@khaleefax9553
The bats were far from paper thin and there are great bowlers today. Give the 21st century a go - it won't bite!
Us with convict heritage never liked seeing that bloke hangin' round with a bat in his hand! Great batsman and a good Pom. Ashes have always been the pinnacle of Test Cricket in Oz.Win or Lose.
He had the classical stylish left handed elegance...of course batsman like Lara and Sobers in particular had this flair as well.
So easy on the eye... He never hit a ball in anger! He would just tell his hands to tell his bat to tell the ball to go away!
Foot work and timing is fantastic
He is the finest Left Hander Batsman, a class of it's own. No one could match him.
The left hander I’ve ever seen, so elegant.
We love to see David Gower Strokes and he is one of the Best England Batsman 🏴 in the world 🌎
Someof his innings are treat to watch.
Met him on May 18th at LORDS .....fantastic personality
How awesome!
Left handed batsman have more flair than right handed batsman. 😉
Most stylish left handed batsman in the history of cricket
Best pommy I've seen ever
David Gower on his day was simply u stoppable n was called the best elegant left hand batter in his hey day's...

Natural Timing, ❤
gover back-foot king and stefan flemming did a bit of this and alistar cook did a lot of it. but gover a great batsman and elegant personified.
England most elegant batsman
Gower is natural and elegant stroke player..
Elegance is the heart and soul of the Fairplay and sportsmanship, isn't it?

Gower treated disgracefully by England! The most graceful batsman ever!
Stats mistake, 0.03 - he missed the Bicentennial Test in March 1988.
He would have played more than 40 tests over that 13 year period. He would have almost played that in tests vs Australia alone.
LOL, just watched the corresponding Mike Atherton video from the same innings. Gower called him through for a suicidal single when Atherton was on 95 and Atherton was run out by a good foot, but the umpire didn't give it. No third umpire in those days.
Gower power
This person was delightful batsman to hear rather than watch
Back in the day no glove touch after every delivery,no high fives!
Gooch and Gower were polar opposites.
Gooch got the results.
Gower made people happy by just watching him play.
Has there been a more elegant player than Gower?
Gowers last test hundred.
He never hit a delivery! It was always a stroke. But hit with delightful felicity
Majid khan was also a top class batsman.
Left handed version of Azharuddin, but with a cleaner "cut", in many senses.
David G came first or Azar on test scene.
Then you can say vice versa.
Nothing like him. Azharuddin was a brilliant player but very 'wristy' - totally different styles of batting.
13 years and only 40 Tests? wow.
Could be Age
@@Lordshiva5689consecutive appearances.
He'd played well over 100 Tests by 1990.
40 consecutive Ashes tests
You miss-understood the statistic.
DG was great and awful at the same time. Majestic until he fenced at one outside off stump and got caught behind!
Could never relax watching him play. Was a class player with wonderfully elegant stroke play but he had an almost self destructive tendency to waft outside the off stump.
There was a beauty and vulnerability in Gower’s batting. Even when he was well set, he’d have a brain fart and throw his wicket away.

Not a bad record against Australia
When cricket was worth watching. Not the ugly carts to the boundary seen nowadays.
A bit like Mark Waugh, laconic
Was forced out of the England side by politics the same as dean jones for forced out of the Aus side
very tough for visiting batsmen to score a century in Australia before DRS and neutral umpires, these runs are worth gold.
@@Downpaymentbluesremember Dravid also for his magnificent 233 & 72* at Adelaide

Wooooooov cover drives. 2 men graced the games the most. David Gower & Mark Waugh
The best of the best when he was nowhere near lunch a Natural
2 hundreds against Aus and 1 against Windies in his 117 tests.

A prototype left hander elegant.....
Gower had Allan Border and Steve Waugh bowling at him all day long.
