The number of cylinders doesn't really matter mostly when it comes to power. It's the cubic capacity that matters and how it is used.
V8 sound out of 4 cylinders like that sounds like magic to me 😂

Nick Cassetta I can get similar frequencies but will I get the same sound out the rear end though is the better question 😂 haha these engine designers are fucking wizards with sound track technology making a 4 cylinder sound like a v8 and shit so it sounds better my god these guys are doing something right and I enjoy it
@@HoweDoYouDo1999 they aren't designing the engines to sound like a v8, it's just an effect of some design choices. The yamaha r1 is a crossplane inline 4 and thus is litterally half a crossplane v8 (the v8's that rumble like in a muscle car). A corssplane inline 4 has uneven firing intervals, in contrast to a regular flatplane inline 4 (which is even firing). This gives the crossplane it's lower, rumbling sound. The aprilia's v4 has firing intervals that are almost the same and thus also sounds similar to a v8
@Nick Cassetta You could run a 4 cylinder at 25% higher RPM and get the same fundamental frequency, but the harmonics will be different, even if both engines are even-firing and have equal-length headers. If you think about it, it makes sense - the inline 4 cylinder always has exactly one cylinder in the exhaust stroke, whereas the 5 cylinder has the strokes overlapping.
Here in Brazil, we have a plenty of 3 cylinders 1 litre engines little cars from a few years now, and with the right exhaust muffler, they sound like V6's engines.

The laverda inline 3 with 180° crank pins basicly fires like an inline 4 with one dead cylinder. Therefore similiarity to an inline 4 isn't unusual, especially when comparing to an old mg, which might not be properly running on all 4 at all times :p

120-degree triples sound like sixes, especially the early Hinckley Triumph triples. Those Laverda 180-degree triples sound like an inline-4 running on 3, which is basically what it is; 1,2,3*gap*1,2,3*gap*
Yeah, pretty much
The Aprilia firing order, and the exhaust grouping, actually highlights the 180° interval to my ears. Much in the same way the VFR1200 setup highlights the 360° interval. Compare the VFR750 / VFR800 with the RC30 / RC45 RVF 750s - 180° crank (like the Aprilia) vs. 360° crank, all in a 90° V package. The 180° cranked engines have identical firing intervals to a cross-plane four. The 360° crank was the sound of Honda's 4-stroke 1000 cc MotoGP machines until a couple of years ago, when they switched to a 180° crank (albeit with 90° intervals and a big gap, because Honda).
The Guzzi V8 came in flat-plane and cross-plane flavours. Try to guess which is which in the various videos on TH-cam (both featured here were cross-plane). Beautifully complex machine, incredible for its time.
The across-the-frame placement of the K1600 engine highlights the 360° spacing between mirrored cylinder pairs in an inline six, much as the boxer crank arrangement does. Hence the slightly dry, rasping note from both. The intakes on many inline sixes fitted to cars have the same 360 honk as a boxer's intake, due to the way the runners feed from the plenum, and to take advantage of strong resonances for performance reasons - NA BMWs and Toyotas in particular.
The 180° triples in Laverdas sound like a flat-plane four with a misfire, as it literally is a flat-plane crank - just missing one of the middle cylinders. Intervals are 180-180-360; the obvious other comparison is to 180° twins: 180-540.

Check out the KTM LC8c engine in the 790 / 890 bikes, and listen for the 5-cylinder overtone arising from the closeness of the 75° / 285° / 435° configuration to various multiples of divisions of 5 in the four stroke cycle (72 / _144_ / 288 / 432).
Allen Millyard made 5 cylinder two strokes based on the Kawasaki triples, an interesting comparison to four-stroke fives.
There should still be vidoes of those crazy Honda dudes putting UEL exhausts on their B-series EGs etc. and getting "the Subaru sound"... :D

Well it is half a V-8 from front to back. In America there are alotta straight 4 cylinders derived from half a V-8. Its done by chopping half the cylinder bank off.
Some people can't tell when a V8 is running on 7 cylinders .

I'm glad it wasn't just me thinking the k1600 and porsches sounded the same.
The Mini Clubman I rebuilt (almost 40yrs ago) into a full 1310cc Cooper S conversion had the works, including larger SU carbs, extractors/headers on an oversize exhaust-system with straight-through muffler, & most crucially had a lumpy rally-cam fitted, which had a few people asking me whether it was a V8 I was hiding under the bonnet/hood!
In the late '70s there was a guy who specialised in VW flat four enhancement.., I don't know exactly what the exhausts he used were but several times I watched old school bikers prick their ears up thinking they were hearing Harleys

The BMW flat 6 sound way better than I thought. Only heard them pottering about. Usually the riders of them are the leisurely type.
Last night I dreamt I was taking an emerald green Tatra T603 for a test drive. It had the front of a 1965 Humber Sceptre crudely grafted onto it. I got into it, and without starting the engine I set off, freewheeling at great speed along what was basically a flat piece of road... never questioning the fact that I was now sat in an open topped car of 1930s design.
Honda's CBX 1000 6 cyl. sounds an awful lot like a V12.
An I6 is like a baby V12, cause 2 of them would make a V12.

Inline 6 is literally half of the v12, you can search bmw 3.0 prototype on youtube, sounds awesome!

1:58 it might not be a rotary but it most certainly has that same rubbing effect with the rpms fluttering like that 😂 it’s like creeping up with the rpms but it’s not
It's a symptom of the piston port timing and scavenging during intake / exhaust overlap. It intermittently results in a misfire due to the "short circuit" the air/fuel mix takes straight out the exhaust - two stroke guys call it "four-stroking". Obviously in the rotary's case it's the rotor or its tip, not the piston rings, that pass over the ports; but the acoustic effect (on the off- or part-throttle fueling) is the same, despite technically being a four stroke cycle.
Another good sounding V4 that could have been used is a Motus, they designed the engine from an LS design and it sounds wicked

I have heard the sound of V12 engined supercars driven at speed and they sounded exactly like my old Wartburg 353 at 30mph. There's a video out there of a Porsche 917 (flat 12) and it also sounds like the Wartburg's two-stroke three.
Yes, as 6 or 12 is multiple of 3. Same with V4 and V8 or a 5 and 10cyl

That's because of the similiar firing order, but i6 can have advantage to sound more nicer than v6, and i3 such as v12. Yea believe it or not, besides.. v12 is a twin inline 6.

When they still run the stock OMP (Oil Metering Pump) they basically don't use oil, when the owner does an OMP delete (without an OMP you need to premix), it does burn some oil, but around half of what a 2 Stroke uses believe it or not.
Hey, VisioRacer. I have noticed, that some inline 6 diesels sound like v8s (diesels, and sometime petrol) especially in closed areas or at 2k revs. Do you have an opinion on that?
On your comment on the Laverda, there is another triple with the same 180° firing order. The MV Agusta Brutale 675 (and possibly the 800 but I am not sure)

Hi! The aprilia and the R1M have different engines. The R1M has an inline 4 with crossplane crankshaft.

I just realised something: a Rotary engine is a variant of a 2 stroke engine. the burbly sound on idle and at partial acceleration, the oil consumption, no valves. I hate the school that teached me mechanics in the wrong way… I learned way more with youtube video and simracing than school. dang it

For my money, V-twin is a closer sound to V8 than V4 is. Mind you, I'm not an objective judge, I love V-twin.

There are some old school V4s that were made for sprint car racing that sound an a lot like V8s. Look up Scat or Sesco V4. They are quite interesting.
