A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a beautiful book. I hope you enjoy it. It's one of those books that really impacted me as a kid. I scored a vintage copy of it in a thrift store recently. 😃
Highly, highly recommend Empire of Pain! If you're worried about it going over your head, I thought it was very accessible and gives a great insight not only into the pharmaceutical industry, but also fields you wouldn't have expected to be part of the whole mechanics of the Sackler family empire -- art, marketing, education among other things. Glad you liked The Terror, one of my favorite horror historicals in recent memory! :)
I think they offer different things though the standard of research for both books is impeccable. Say Nothing feels a lot more true crime given its subject matter, Empire of Pain feels a lot more like an expose. Depends on which you like better as a nonfiction reading experience tbh
Completely agree, I went into Empire of Pain knowing nothing about the Sackler family or the US opioid crisis and I still absolutely loved it! One of my favorite non-fictions for sure
I just finished War and Peace. I listened to it on audio, library (Libby). It was terribly overwhelming at the beginning, but the last 2/3 gripped me. I did have to check it out several times (61 hours of listening). I’m keeping the physical copy to reread one day.
I spotted a cheap secondhand copy of Steinbeck’s East of Eden the other day, which was awesome. Currently reading Sansom’s Winter in Madrid, The Wheel of Time book 7, and Lawrence’s The Book That Wouldn’t Burn - loving them all so far!
As a fellow photographer unless you have zero teeth issues. Almost all my jaw issues stem from tension in my back & shoulders. Stretch! Lay on a lacrosse ball. Roll out the knots. Truly Also reading Cannery Row right now. It’s so good! I can’t put my finger on what’s magical about it. I just love it. It’s a cute little story.
my english teacher recommended a tree grows in brooklyn to me at 14, and i buddy read it with my best friend. i hope that teacher lives a long and happy life because that book was SO incredibly formative for both of us. six years and a couple hundred books later and i still think about it at least once a week lol. i hope you love it too!
I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn as a teenager and loved it…now I’m in my 40’s and looking forward to rereading it as an adult. 🙂 Hope you have a great week!
War and Peace is excellent. I finished it earlier this year. Just FYI that the Briggs translation that you have is heavily Anglicized, but a lot of people really love that translation!
Which translation of W&P is it? If you end up not being into it I HIGHLY recommend the Briggs translation. I started reading the Constance Garnett translation and got 300ish pages in and I had to switch and it made a MASSIVE difference. Just my 2¢!
Tree grows in Brooklyn is an excellent book!!! One of my favorites. Coming of age story of a young girl. Also a period piece which is interesting to see how life really was back then. An American classic.
There are lots of instances where people criticize Dan Simmons for being problematic and say his works are racist or sexist. He is also very conservative. Tbh I don’t know the details, and I’ve only ever read Hyperion. His one female character in that book is not really written with much dimension, but I can’t speak to any of his other work. I just remember seeing a Reddit post about his work going off the deep end with political view in the last few years.
Watched Elia Kazan's adaptation of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn earlier this year and immediately added it to my holiday season reading list. Found an old, already annotated copy at a used book store. Super excited to check it out next month
Breakfast of Champions is an absolute favorite of mine. Very influential for my own writing too. Vonnegut is such an easy read too. Also speaking of Late Night With the Devil-have you seen Ghostwatch? It’s a British TV special that aired on Halloween in the 90’s, the catch being it was aired as if it were a live broadcast-like a modern War of the Worlds. So it’s very subtle in its scares and keeps to the “this is a real live event” idea very well. Aired in ‘92 so it’s before Blair Witch and of course before Paranormal Activity. It’s actually fantastic
Ahhh, so annoyed I only hear about this new Susanna Clarke story now; I *just* put in a Waterstones order last week 😩 well, thanks for letting me know anyway though, now I can put it on my 'buy ASAP' list 😁 Parable of the Sower is one of my favorite books, hope you'll enjoy it. Also, I do hope you'll check out Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell at some point! It's Susanna Clarke's first novel, and it's amazing, and I'm really curious to know if it's something you enjoy or not. This new story you bought now is set in that world, so could be a good way of gauging your interest in JS&MN.
I was on a non-fiction kick for a bit and two to add to your list if they’re not there already are Long Walk to Freedom (Autobiography of Nelson Mandela) and Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick. Wonderful, engaging, and eye-opening!
HMS Terror started as a warship, it was supposed to frighten enemies hence its name. Interesting fact, after it was converted to expedition ship, The Terror&Erebus had many successful trips until 1945-46 when they both became icebound
I've been trying to read through The Eyes of the Dragon since you recommended it a few months ago and It's been so hard for me to focus on it but I want to finish. I need to know what happens to Flagg and Peter and poor Thomas. I can't crumple it up and throw it to the side, but definitely struggling to get through it 🤣
I watched Hell House LLC based on your recommendation last week. I binged 1, 2 and 3………this film haunted me for a few days and I kept expecting to see that bastard clown standing in the dark!
I just watched the TV show of Terror and it was superb. One of my favorite actors, Jared Harris, had the lead. But the final scene has left me bewildered, even after multiple viewings, so I'd appreciate feedback on what it portrays. At first I thought Crozier was crouched waiting for a seal to come through the ice, but as the camera backed up there didn't appear to be any hole in the ice. Then I thought maybe it was just a suggestion that he had immersed himself in that life, and since we don't know what happened to him in real life, it stood as an open-ended ending. I'm sure there are other interpretations. I have not read the book so I don't know what the book said, or if that scene is even in it.
I saw Late Night With The Devil a few months back. It was decent. Super Predictable and with a generic, cartoonish ending that blows the whole thing, but still mighty decent for what it was.
Could they mean Dan Savage, although I can’t imagine why. War and Peace is amazing. I do, however, wish that you had bought the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, at least I really enjoyed that translation. But what do I know? lol I don’t speak Russian!
Hi Nick, thank you for your video🙏. I am from Russia and we study War and Peace at school at the age of 16. I really liked it though Tolstoy did not like this book of his own😂, but it is a piece of russian history, but i would love to know your opinion if u read it
@@Martin.Christopher ahaha sorry man!! I have the new one recorded I’m just having issues with it posting. Seems to be corrupted. Hopefully will figure it out soon :)
@booksaresick nice! Ngl, I've been binging your videos for the last month or so... really digging them. Sometimes I just play random ones I've watched while commuting, lol. Like having a friend there talking at me.
I have watched most of your videos and have been a fan since your first video but notice you never look directly to the camera. Not sure why that bothers me…
No, Dan Simmons has some problematic right-wing views that come through in his novels, and I def know that a while ago people were mad at him for something he said about Greta Thunberg. Art and artist tho, I have a bunch of his first editions, and honestly Hyperion is in my top 5 sci-fi books
I suffer from Tmj issues and never had a problem until I tried invisalign. I get a tmj massage and it's amazing. It's painful but it really helps. Let me know if you want me to send you information with helping to find a masseuse that specializes in it. Mine is a lifesaver and she trained in London.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn has been my favorite book throughout adulthood. When I was a single mom and times were tough it really helped me emotionally.
Highly, highly recommend Empire of Pain! I also loved this, and the audiobook is really good as well
Say Nothing is even better . Both are great though

Endurance by Alfred Lansing. If you liked The Terror you will like Endurance. I found it to be very intense. I loved both books.
Hear hear

Tree grows in Brooklyn AND Vonnegut! Great pick ups.
And W & P is one of my favorites. Other cover you probably said would have been better translation but you can’t read it only once. Or shouldn’t
Thank you for picking up Vonnegut! 😊
If there is a PO Box I can send mail to, I’d love to send you a book for Christmas!
Nick, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorite books! Amazing! Read it now!😊🙏
Loved the character of Aunt Sissy in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I named one of my dogs after her because her personality reminded me of Aunt Sissy.
@@lisaperkins4438 I love her, too! She’s played by Joan Blondell in the film. Have you seen it?
@thomasceneri867 No I have not but I will look it up and give it a watch. I did not know there was a movie.
Please check out The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Great fall/winter book. Stephen King praised it. Its a masterpiece.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is great! One of my favorites.
I’m reading A Tree Grows In Brooklyn at the moment. About 3/4 way through. I love it. Hope you like it as much as I do.
As a fellow photographer unless you have zero teeth issues. Almost all my jaw issues stem from tension in my back & shoulders. Stretch! Lay on a lacrosse ball. Roll out the knots. Truly

Thank you! Always love these chats! Have a great rest of the weekend!
You too!
Great translation of War and Peace--very readable. Read it in a year--one chapter a day.
Just finishing it up this way myself!
Nice job! I plan on reading it next year.

I can't wait to hear what you think of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
I love love love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
I'm the opposite, I'm too scared to read The Terror because the show is too perfect for me. Maybe one day though!

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS IS SOOOOOOOO GOOD!
i have severe TMJ,best thing ive done that greatly helps is getting a soft mouth guatd from the dentist.expensive but so worth it! 😊
Second this, but in the case of short term jaw pain a $3 do-it-yourself mouthguard from Walmart almost always works for me! Takes 5 min to do.
Breakfast of Champions is an absolute favorite of mine. Very influential for my own writing too. Vonnegut is such an easy read too.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is excellent! Then check out the sequel, Joy in the Morning !👍📚👏
definitely give empire of pain a shot!
One time I was told I reminded a friend of the book a tree grows in Brooklyn. I still haven't read it 😅

They also both have mountains in Antarctica named after them because of their successful trips.
I really want to read War and Peace but damn, its a commitment
The book Fear from NYRB you picked up is a brutal read that is oh so amazing. Couldn’t put it down.

I highly recommend Summer of Night by Dan Simmons if you’re a Stephen King fan.
I'm currently reading The Hunger by Alma Katsu based on the same case as The Terror.
I watched Hell House LLC based on your recommendation last week. I binged 1, 2 and 3………this film haunted me for a few days and I kept expecting to see that bastard clown standing in the dark!
Breakfast of Champions in my favorite Vonnegut!! It’ll certainly be an interesting place to start. Where was Franny and Zooey in the haul☹️
Are you doing the 11-22-63 read a long? I just picked up a used copy

Any update on the Little Free Library vandal?
Enjoying your talks! Just curious how much time you spend reading each day?
You should look into Flashback by Dan Simmoms...
Dan Simmons is great, give Hyperion a go!
I saw Late Night With The Devil a few months back. It was decent. Super Predictable and with a generic, cartoonish ending that blows the whole thing, but still mighty decent for what it was.
As a Stephen King fan, you should start with Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. It's an amazing coming of age horror tale.
Open book on Kindle -> Table of Contents -> Cover ….. 🤔
