Dowry is a crime.... Alimony is a right .... even in cases where there are no children, even if wife is more richer financially, better educated and better earnings.
Dowry used to be the only thing that guaranteed the wife and family got respect. Whether they were paying it or giving it. If dowry is a crime, so should buying engagement rings. The engagement ring was supposed to be kept by the girl if the man broke his promise to marry her, to offset costs incurred for the wedding...also if they were married then he died or they divorced, she could use the ring as collateral to find her feet again.That is why men were encouraged to buy a ring at least worth 3 months of his salary. Because the ring was a form of dowry.
