Thank you for the notice and kind words Doc Holliday. I keep a log book of every curve we have when it was tamped, what was done
when tamping and any major repairs or work done to the curves.
Also keep a maintenance log book for my tamper itself. Really
appreciate your dropping by and checking out the show. May you
have a very good day my friend.

I got track charts of several railroads that show all the work done and the dates done. Some notes even tell where the ballast came from. It's good to know when trying to recreate a scene based on a date.

I know alot of guys that refuse to film their work for fear of being criticized. The fact that you're so proud to do it, and there's just no end to the knowledge you have is absolutely amazing. Even when you have the guys helping you out, you just have all kinds of praise for their work also. This is why this is one of my all time favorite channels. Plus it helps that I'm a huge train buff anyhow, I'm probably one of the 10 guys in my town that loves to get railroaded 😁

We arrived at work one morning and dealt with something similar.
Initially we packed ballast under the rail concerned, but every time a train went over, it would dip again.
It was decided to put a temporary speed restriction on the section and have someone sit in a vehicle and monitor it. Turned out the cause was some recent work nearby had altered a water course and had been undermining the embankment.

Drainage to stop land slip is what you need here . There is water below ground flowing from up hill to the creek as its meant too. Your railroad line sits above it . Dang! Monitor, Repair and Profit. Keep up the great work D.

Your engineer is going to have fun with the soil slip. That grade is going to keep sliding, hopefully slowly enough that you can keep up adding ballast on top. But a track in constant flux is not exactly ideal for a railroad, ha!

This brought back a memory from my early years, when I was in engineering for a natural gas corporation - supply division.
We had a section of a high pressure transmission line down in your area that we couldn't keep stable.
It would shift which would put extreme pressure on some pipe sections and stretch it other places.
They finally ended up driving piles into the ground about 40' and built a 'retaining wall' for the lack of a better term.
It worked - the area was stable the remaining eight years I worked for them.
The cause was logged as "aqua stimulated substrata geological realignment" - the ground shifted way down below grade because of the underground water flow.
When Mother Nature wants to play games, it can be a real challenge.
    Hope you got 'er stabilized.
"The best of mankind will be challenged the most"

Add some cribbing on the side of curve 39-A using some old sleepers and old rail pounded down into the curvature in order help hold the ballast in place. You might also need to install a drain pie under the roadbed in order to carry the water away better from the opposite side. You could have a natural spring coming off the mountain/hill on the high side that is slowly undermining the roadbed. And even if you already have 1 drainpipe, consider using a "W" formation of 3 pipes that all lead to the lowest point on the opposite side of the roadbed. Thus even if 1 gets clogged, you would still have 2 more remaining in operation.

Dave, if you want to see rainfall, you should move to South Florida. In one summer rainstorm I saw 2 inches of rain fall in 15 minutes. And that was recorded on an official National Weather Service Gage. Currently where I live we are somewhere around 120-130% of our normal rainfall to date at over 24.5". With more to fall tonight. We are now in the mow the yard twice a week season.

so quick. Our average annual rain fall here is 46 inches. We do
have to mow grass twice a week for a couple of weeks in

Looking at the previous roadbed and your log notations, it seems to move erratically, fits & starts, so rest easy cause you know next week, month or 2 years, it'll be at it again. Also, if those previous drains were working at all, there might still be a little washout/gully/ravine down the slope to help find them, though it'll be tough with summer's weeds.

Dave... just had an idea... very liquid concrete slurry.. pour it in batches to allow it to soak into the Ballast on the downhill side of the sleepers so it does not run off the end of the ballast into the creek.. as soon as it drops into the ballast.. pour another layer... hopefully you will solidify the ballast deep and turn it into a solid mass.. you may have to do hopefully 4 or 5 batches. with the last one not quite as fluid... because its a concrete slurry with very fine sand it will not be as strong as full cement..
you may want to put up 2 sheets of plywood next to your ballast pile.. one horizontal and one vertical.. duplicate the slope angle with some ballast.. it will take less than 2 yards of ballast.. pour slurry from the top.. let it cure a few days.. flip it over with your front loader to see how it glued it all together. you might do several pours along the 8 foot length of plywood with various amounts of water added to the mix.. to see if you can find out which pours thru the ballast and gets deep..
alternative.. do like you showed and move the track farther away from the edge... does anybody rent a High rail low boy trailer so you could get a drilling rig to allow you to bore holes for Soldier beam or just drop in rebar tubes and fill with concrete.. so you have a deep foundation.. the MTA in los angeles had to do that on soft spots along san fernando road in burbank ca and also for the Alemeda Corridor south of Anaheim street in Long beach.. i think Malcom drilling was involved.. www.malcolmdrilling.com/locations/#modalMidAtlantic. chances that the sliding slope will fail and take out most of your rolling stock is HUGE..
your company may want to invest in a cheap depressed center flat car. to load cement mixers or drill rigs on. to get them to the corner. or as a work platform for bag mixers and water drums..

Thank you for sharing that very detailed comment Wayne. There are
RR's out there that have had very good success with what you are
saying using a grout that is injected down into the ballast. Actually
I suggested them many years ago to get a RR engineer in here and
explore that option. They had a company at the time who was doing
similar grout work under ground holding up the roof of the mine. That
contractor was the one who told me about a RR they did somewhere in
New England, I forget which RR, it's been too long ago.
At the time I also suggested them core drilling right in the center of the
track to find out how deep the water problem is, that idea was shot
down by our mine engineering department.... sigh. I was told back then to keep on tamping, adding ballast is cheaper than fixing the problem..... sigh Of course back then we didn't have any money
after our last company filed bankruptcy. So now it's back
in the hands of the engineering department, they are monitoring the
situation. At least now we have a company that is willing to spend money on track safety so that is very good. Appreciate very much your taking the time to watch and may you have a really good day my friend.

Wow - that was a big drop, good quick repair. Looking at the slope from the cab of the tamper, pretty clear to see that the hill is sliding down towards the river. I think you will be needing some pretty major civil engineering works in the near future to stabilise that bank.

You are right Glenn we have some problems here. It's in the hands of
the mine engineering department, see what they can come up with.
Since we have our own engineering department they won't bring in
an outside engineer. So I'll keep on tamping this up every time it drops again. Thank you for visiting with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

Your certainly welcome Rashid. Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day. And, if you haven't already done so, check out my second channel with more cool railroad videos and other stuff I get into on it. Your the kind of person I would love to have as a subscriber to it.

You are right, one was enough Yellow Lab! We don't want anymore.
Hopefully the mine engineering department can figure out what is causing this and then we can correct the problem. Appreciate very much your taking the time to watch and may you have a really good day my friend.
