Tom, I love your honesty. No matter if things go well, or if they go bad, you show us the truth, so we can learn with you. Thank you so much. Oh, and damn you are brave!!!
Don't approach dips perpendicular! Go at it an angle with the passenger side down into it first (the non-valve side so they don't go low). Picture it like someone trying to learn how to water ski on double skis - when crossing over the wake they don't do it at a sharp angle, they do it very gradually. Trust me, it works! Teen daughter and I have been 7 yrs full time all over the US and western Canada on way to Alaska. Now, she's adulting so I'm solo and still traveling for the last 2 years. Picture that awkward adolescent boy trying to maneuver boat wake on double skis!
THIS IS WHY YOU DO NOT WAIT UNTIL DARK 30 to look for a camping spot. 3;3;3 rule. Plain for 3 hours for packing and cleaning up to go, Drive for 3 hours and start looking by 3PM for a site
Why did you not engage 4x4 when you started spinning? This was incredibly hard to watch, that poor driveshaft/u-joints, once you start hopping like that: STOP!! Or you will drop something in your drivetrain. It doesn't hurt the truck to run it in 4x4, use it when you need to. I know you said you used it eventually but don't let that rear end hop like that, you won't like the outcome one day. Other than that you're doing good, that was an awesome area to stay! jealous lol
@Wali_Wingnut F450's don't have the option to pull out the 4x4 knob to lock the rear diff, that's 250 & 350 only. In 4x4 all wheels will spin on a 450&550, my work 550 gets beat on a lot in the mud lol
WOW...just read all the comments... Tom sure got a dose of reality checks... We all do our thing in the rv world ---- but it is obvious from the comments that this couple is unique! We all enjoy (?) their vlog for different reasons. Imho, the rig is just larger than 2 people need, even for full timers... and driving a 2nd vehicle will eventually get old. Me: 82, 2001 40 ft Monaco Diplomat with 135,000 miles, towing a Silverado.
If you are ever 4 hours around Las Vegas, and you get stuck, go to Facebook and look up SNORR, Southern Nevada Off Road Recovery. We are a 501c3 organization, all Off Road Recoveries are free, but we do except donations. We believe in paying it forward. So if you are ever in the area and get stuck. Let us know.
The good old boys of Arkansas helped me out of a very challenging situation. Boys and their toys! They were fantastic and happily accepted one of our handmade machine wash/dry toothbrush knotted rag rugs as a 'donation'. ;)
Tom, Not sure if your lumber is greentreated or not but if so don't toss it in the firepit. Alot of that stuff when burned will release arsenic for you and the family to breath. Also I agree with the others. When you leave the pavement with our f450s take a moment and lock those hubs and drop her into 4x4. I have a 2017 f450 platinum and even with the 2019+ contentials they still suck in the sand. Lovely trailer but it's a boat anchor in the sand. Safe travels!!
I never liked to arrive at any site in the dark 😣 too nerve wracking. It’s worth paying for a level and well lit site. Stay safe and thanks for sharing your wonderful adventures 😘
consider putting the chocks opposite the side where you put boards. The boards are pretty slick and the chock might slide. Better to put chocks on the opposite side and on the "ground" even soft sand will be better than sliding around on a board. We enjoy your Journey!
Watching stuff like this makes me once again very thankful we just went to a 19 ft class b :-) I would love all that space but it's so much simpler without it.
Our travel trailer has the Lippert 3.0 5 point auto leveling system. We get our trailer as level as possible from side to side using boards etc under the tires. THEN we let the auto leveling system fine tune things. The first time we used it, we didn't level side to side first. The system ended lifting one side of our trailer's tires up off of the ground. Apparently that's a huge no no. You don't want the system to lift, just stabilize and make small adjustments to the leveling of your trailer. It sure beats the old manual crank down stabilizers.
Hey Tom, If you are going to do more "offroad" camping, learn about airing down your tires in your truck. Also learn about portable air compressors like Viair. It will make your life much easier. Safe travels...
That 450 has commercial tires (19.5’s), you don’t gain anything by airing those down because the sidewalls are so rigid. If you’re airing them down you also run the risk of damaging them, they are not meant to be aired up and down like an LT tire. I don’t recommend you ever air down a commercial tire if you don’t have to.
carry 2 x 12 or 2 x 14 boards.... 6 of them.... put them under your drive wheels when you stop and under your levelers.... easy and they work.... I cover by dumping hose with one in cgs..... no smell... no embarrassment
I just got back from a week long trip to Utah, AWESOME trip, did Angels Landing, The Narrows, Buckskin Gulch, Fairyland Loop trail, and several other things. To me though best part of the trip was the North Rim of Grand Canyon, one of the most amazing views I've ever seen and I'm fortunate enough to have seen some of the best. Enjoy the road and stay safe.
Thanks for your comment on the cc. The reason I asked was because I have Neruropathy in my right. And it's hard to hold the pedal down for long periods of time.
Watching this makes me nervous. Reminds me of when we needed to get turned around and thought we could pull in where farmers enter their fields. Husband tried to go in part of the way and then tried to back up. Our hitch with bikes was digging in the dirt. We had to take bikes off plus rack. We pulled up into his field and finally were able to get turned around. Lucky we didn't hurt his corn.
Hi guys, I've been watching your channel forever it seems. On your kayaks, you have straight up & down. Why not hang them at a 45-degree angle, their top at the right top of RV angled down to the left bottom of Rv. By doing this you would never again need to worry about them dragging on anything.
@@marksperos8278 in this situation we will manually level the 5th wheel while connected to the truck and have never had to disconnect for overnighters. We have the same hydraulic Jack's on our 44ft Raptor.
My first thought after reading all the comments was, "Hey, let us know where you're going to be next so we can be there waiting with our lawn chairs, pop corn, and adult beverages." When you're done, we'll hold up our score cards like they used to do in the Olympics! We've all had our "train wreck" days. I think my worst one was losing part of the roof on my class A when I got caught in an Oklahoma storm on I-40. You need a little note on your dash...."Do NOT try to find a camping spot after dark."
consider putting a winch on your jeep in case you run across a situation where you get stuck at least you would have a chance to get free before you had to call a tow truck . Also some tow straps / rope two engines are better than one
Time to upgrade to a falken wildpeak at tire if they have the correct load rating. If not, i do believe that the nitto ridge grapplers are load rated for a dually truck. About to upgrade our superduty tires this fall. My wife and i are fans of falken wildpeaks for on-road and off-road use...the at's and mt's work flawlessy on both terrains. I know u guys would prefer relaxing and enjoying this breathtaking scenery instead of fighting to get the truck unstuck!
I am glad you got out ok otherwise we would've never met you in Canyonlands. I hope you stay safe in you're travels. What an awesome lifestyle choice. Yvonne and I will be looking into it more. I wish we had time to visit Zion, but our next stop will be Byrce Canyon. I look forward to keeping up with you're journey as a new subscriber.
I just picked up the GoTreads. You guys might want to check into them for this very reason! USA company (Kansas) and originally developed for military use. We have them on board now and hope wr never need them!! (40ft DP)
We were at Lee's Ferry a month ago and managed to grab the last site that would fit our 34' Chaparral. Hope you eventually got one. It is a great place.
Good to see u made it ok eventually. Echo the comments about angling thru those dips coming off the paved road. We always get close to level side to side before auto levelling. Otherwise you’ll have wheels off the ground or run out of stroke. Good idea to have some blocks to put under the levellers on the side that is raised up as well. Jealous of those campsites. Enjoy
You need to go to Harbor Freight and get the double hitch that goes into your receiver and has two 2" receivers and put your kayak hitch into the top one and that will raise the bottom up 2" higher and maybe they won't drag as easy.
Looks like it!!!!!!!! That's exactly what I thought. Guys that's used to wash out your sewer hose and blast the valves after dump, kind of like an RV enema lmao. Also, incorrect situation and usage of the Water Bandit.
Fun video Tom! 👍😁 I'd be getting pretty scared of getting stuck without the extra Jeep. Curious about on beach camping. I know you had an experience in Texas. Any others?
Tom, you can reverse the side arms on the B&W (angled back versus forward) and you'll gain a couple more inches of clearance between your tailgate and the front of the trailer. Just need a couple of large wrenches/sockets and about an hour to place them in the rear position. It also provides extra space between the trailer cap and your truck cab when making tight turns.
careful, the reason the hitch is over the wheels is for load capacity. Moving the pin farther back will actually increase your pin weight due to the leverage of not being over the axle.
For 1 overnight stay Boondocking, why would you unhook? We don't. Also, Never Never do what you did in the dark. That's way to dangerous. You were almost completely lucky. Remember, time change, daylight long hours, winter less daylight. Stop at least 1 hour before nightfall. You don't have to unhook! Stay Safe & Happy Travels. TY for sharing.
The next time you come across one of them places, where the grown takes a dip, try and hit it, side ways, your truck and trailer will be flatter that way, like a motor bike when it crosses train tracks.
I don't know about your F-450, but ours on the hub says AUTO and LOCK. We found out on Galveston Beach that auto means disengaged. We buried the rear wheels, I switched into 4x low and only the rear wheels spun. When I turned the hub lever to "lock" both front wheels spun slightly and then pulled us out with no problem. When I checked with Ford the said the sticker on the hubs should say lock and unlock, there is no auto on a F-450.
There is a lot to learn when you take ANY vehicle "off road". There is a drastic change in approach to "earth" driving vs pavenent. I have held back on taking my 32ft Class C off the pavement because she is low......Twisting and tweeking the frame of any rv is going to lead to body issues and water leaks. I went off roading in 4x4's many years ago and I know what can happen....even if you are careful!!
Do you have manual or automatic hubs on your front wheels? Did you turn them? If not, you were not in 4 wheel drive. On our 19 F450, you have to turn the hubs in for it to engage.
Yakima ropes have them there a little spendy. But compared to a tow truck there cheap. It's like insurance it's expensive tell you need it. But once you need it it's pretty damn cheap. We also just got rid of Nannas grandma van and picked up our smart car for on our HDT. Another step closer to retirement and getting out there. Hope to catch up to you folks one day. Brian and Cindy, have safe travels.
That water at the dump is not potable water. That hose with the ball on it is for washing out your sewer hoses. The ball stops you from getting splashed because it fills the hose end
You know how the really, really good shows on TV have an abundant amount of commercials. Well you all have sooo many ads…what does that tell you. Awesome watching your videos!
Anderson Levelers work wonders. By far the best leveling system out there. Having said that, not sure they would work on a trailer that size. As there are just two of you have you ever thought of something a tad smaller ? Do you really need all that room ? Just wondering. Cheers 🍻
The Anderson levelers would just sink into the sand. And that size of trailer for Full-time is the best 👌 You need to have room for your belongings and room to live somewhat comfortable. We just ordered an Alliance Valor 40v13 to basically live and travel in. We needed the 13ft garage to haul 2 Can-Am Rykers because we don't want to have a chase vehicle.
This post is LONG and NOT meant to be judgmental or condescending in any way. Remarks are from following/observing your channel for a while and this post. Here we go.......By what is posted, it seems like you spend more time dealing with hauling/handling the the kayaks than using them. I do realize that we may not see EVERYTHING you guys do and respect that. Another poster mentioned mounting them at an angle across the back or even racking them on your truck. Don't know the circumstances but from what I've seen for usage, would "chucking" them and rental be an option? We have a 38ft 5th wheel weighing 14k. We do quite a bit of lot docking, boondocking and some campgrounds. Anytime (if possible) when we pull into these places after dark we get any spot we can, level up, if needed, with boards best we can and put front Jack's down for a little stabilization. In campgrounds we don't even set up till the am. (Maybe electric if hot) By doing this we don't bother the neighbors as much and less likely to make mistakes. We then find the "perfect" spot the next day. I've looked into retrofitting our 5th wheel with a leveling system but don't like the ground clearance the jacks take away. We use a 4ft level and 2ft planks and usually get level side to side on first try. This comes from experience. When menuvering into sites or going on boondocking roads, I generally put truck into 4x4 low with hubs unlocked. You dont stress or heat the transmission up as much. Just put in drive and let truck pick its own gear. Can run about 30mph pretty easily. About as fast as one needs to go on those roads anyway. I just watch for where 4x4 may be needed and lock hubs in then. When chocking, I use full size rubber large truck chocks. (Pyramid style found at Harbor Freight) I use them on the boards as they give the chock a good foundation. Put in place, back up against them and put one in front of wheesl then put truck in nutral. Ready to unhook if desired by taking pressure off hitch lock. I DO NOT use any plastic chocks as any I have used either crush or pop out like Tiddley winks. SIDE NOTE... Always chock the "up hill" wheels when leveling. The "up hill" wheels will always have/keep the most weight on them. When getting into soft sand and loose traction STOP. Use your leveling boards or shovel and shovel a little sand away from the tires in the direction you want to go and "stuff" board as far under as many tires as can, especially drive tires. I've gotten 6x6 wheel drive loaded cement trucks out of sugar sand with 2ft pieces of 2x4 found on the construction site I was on. You guy haven't had much boondocking experience and run into a little trouble on this one. Boondocking is a totaly different animal than RV parks. DO NOT let this discouraged you from boondocking. As you progress more into boondocking, you will learn more and more about water management (fresh, grey and black), cell signal, power requirements, scouting out sites, determining what sites you can get to with your rig and more. Size of your rig will limit you on some sites BUT there are MANY great sites available to you. Some of these will depend on your comfort with handling your rig. Do what I did and a lot of other boondockers have done........watch TH-cam boondockers😇. It's a whole new world out there. ENJOY IT Keep the vids coming. I learn something from every one I watch.
If you don’t know the story about John D. Lee and Lee’s Ferry, you should read up on it. Pretty crazy story. He was executed by firing squad for his part in the massacre of 120 men, women and children. By the way, thanks for another awesome video you two. Can’t wait until my wife and I get to live that lifestyle. Safe travels.
Im watching what my dad already taught me by, 10, 12, 14 years old. Rural northern Wisconsin.. That little sissy night adventure in Arizona is child's play compared to where I go in wisconsin in my e350 extended 2 wheel drive. 38 foot grand design bumper pull. 3 pull outs. Why the heck did you unhook and go through all that bs for one night. And good God, get the right tires. I'm in pain watching this silliness. How I'm a 32 year commercial truck driver, and yocals like this are allowed to pull rigs like that
Why don't you have your kayaks mounted higher? It looks like they're several inches below your rear bumper level. I think their clearance would be an issue many times.
You both take it easy be cReful. U think this summer u both could seek new territory. No one tours thru the northern states all the way up and across. Please consider it.
Looks like ya made it hard on ya self man... should always try to unhook straight with the RV. Make things much easier! Shoot for 1 night I wouldn’t even unhook haha
I may have missed it, But I didn't see you lock the front hubs, that Rig(truck & trailer) should not have gotten stuck in that child's sandbox, simply turning the knob on your dash does NOT fully engage the 4 wheel drive !!!

Clearance is better at an angle but you also have to worry about twisting

Tom, Not sure if your lumber is greentreated or not but if so don't toss it in the firepit. Alot of that stuff when burned will release arsenic for you and the family to breath. Also I agree with the others. When you leave the pavement with our f450s take a moment and lock those hubs and drop her into 4x4. I have a 2017 f450 platinum and even with the 2019+ contentials they still suck in the sand. Lovely trailer but it's a boat anchor in the sand. Safe travels!!
Oh my, yep we learned a long time ago not to park & set up in the dark. Glad it all worked out, beautiful place🤗
I never liked to arrive at any site in the dark 😣 too nerve wracking. It’s worth paying for a level and well lit site.
Stay safe and thanks for sharing your wonderful adventures 😘
FYI, they say you are supposed to engage your 4x4 about once a month to keep everything lubricated.
consider putting the chocks opposite the side where you put boards. The boards are pretty slick and the chock might slide. Better to put chocks on the opposite side and on the "ground" even soft sand will be better than sliding around on a board. We enjoy your Journey!
When "FREE" comes at a cost...
Just a little tip……when you’re driving over a dip like that don’t go head on, come in at an angle.
Watching stuff like this makes me once again very thankful we just went to a 19 ft class b :-) I would love all that space but it's so much simpler without it.
You guys travel everywhere with two vehicles? Wow.
Keep those ideas, videos, recommendations, and mess ups coming. I am learning tons from you guys.
Let’s just say Thank God for a Ford and a man that knows how to handle the beast !
Lol your joking right?
That is precisely why I bought a dually with 4x4 too!
Thought of that the very first time they mounted them that way -- and scraped bottom.
Great video. Always entertaining and fun to watch
Your so GREAT! We just love y’all laughing through what life throws y’all’s way! Thanks for the truth & helping us all just take it easy!!
If only a temp spot for a single night, wouldn't it be easier to just stay hooked up to the truck?
God I was wondering the same thing.
Yes no reason to disconnect I don't think he always thinks things through.
I think he would have to in order to use the self-leveler on the 5th wheel, wouldn't he?
@@marksperos8278 in this situation we will manually level the 5th wheel while connected to the truck and have never had to disconnect for overnighters. We have the same hydraulic Jack's on our 44ft Raptor.
road side park or truck stop
We went through that area Monday . We stayed at Jacobs lake for $22.00 and it was beautiful
FYI, start in 4x4 mode. Don’t wait till your stuck.
Cool
As usual, great content! Keep it up. You’ve almost got me convinced
Oh no ! Not stuck ! Good evening everybody !
Ha! Don't you wish you were at the beach?😂
Beautiful free spot
Another great video. Hard watching you get stuck but you did great!
Always an adventure!!! That’s really a beautiful area!
Nice. Hope you are showing Lee’s Ferry. It is awesome.
consider putting a winch on your jeep in case you run across a situation where you get stuck at least you would have a chance to get free before you had to call a tow truck .
(40ft DP)
possative video, even tho it was tough for you. much better guys. enjoyable to watch.keep it going.
The old argument of 2WD vs 4WD (fair MPG vs BAD MPG) or stuck vs NON-Stuck.
manual locking front hubs?
That’s the Navajo side of the river. Glad they let y’all come thru there.
We were at Lee's Ferry a month ago and managed to grab the last site that would fit our 34' Chaparral. Hope you eventually got one. It is a great place.
Thank goodness for the 4 wheel dr😅. Great video
Enjoy
Wow, that is lovely scenery that had, after all the trouble getting set up.
You need to go to Harbor Freight and get the double hitch that goes into your receiver and has two 2" receivers and put your kayak hitch into the top one and that will raise the bottom up 2" higher and maybe they won't drag as easy.
when will you ditch the 2nd vehicle??? Been rving 22 years... 135,000 on my Class A 40 fter.... never saw anyone else with your setup....
Have you considered putting a rack system on the Jeep to carry the kayaks?
I bought these red, leveling banana looking things and they level up to 4 inches. really easy to use
I will look up the name for you
next time cut the ditch at an angle
Did you fill up your water tank using the dump station water?
Looks like it!!!!!!!! That's exactly what I thought. Guys that's used to wash out your sewer hose and blast the valves after dump, kind of like an RV enema lmao. Also, incorrect situation and usage of the Water Bandit.
People use that water tip to clean out their hoses and dump pipes. Bad move to connect that with the rv water fill.
@@10001694 😉🤮😂🤣
I've seen some very horrendous activity in that big toilet bowl. Wear gloves! (Doggy bags on hands work great too!)
We have completely infected your fresh water system.
Fun video Tom! 👍😁 I'd be getting pretty scared of getting stuck without the extra Jeep. Curious about on beach camping. I know you had an experience in Texas. Any others?
Love your vids! You live and you learn. Looked at a momentum today. The girlfriend and I plan on doing full time and it's perfect for us both
Tom, you can reverse the side arms on the B&W (angled back versus forward) and you'll gain a couple more inches of clearance between your tailgate and the front of the trailer.
@@malone1todd It's still over the axle; it's literally a couple of inches either way.
That was sketchy! Glad y'all made it out safe.
My grandpa always said “your never really stuck till you’re out of ideas”
On our 19 F450, you have to turn the hubs in for it to engage.
guess you'll be getting a tow rope for the jeep. it might be just enough to get you out if you don't bury it.
One of those big nylon ones that stretch out. I pulled out a stuck 60,000 truck with my chevy impala company vehicle. I was shocked it did it.
WOW, no more parking in the dark!!! ;)
That water at the dump is not potable water. That hose with the ball on it is for washing out your sewer hoses. The ball stops you from getting splashed because it fills the hose end
Tom did good :)
Two four wheel drives yeap you get there hope you got some tow straps there tom
You know how the really, really good shows on TV have an abundant amount of commercials. Well you all have sooo many ads…what does that tell you. Awesome watching your videos!
OMG guys I feel your pain - been there....
Did you have he front wheels locked?
What is the water buddy you mention at the beginning?
Way too much trouble just to park for one night. When you drag a mansion around with you, Life becomes more effort than fun.
Exactly
Anderson Levelers work wonders. By far the best leveling system out there. Having said that, not sure they would work on a trailer that size. As there are just two of you have you ever thought of something a tad smaller ? Do you really need all that room ? Just wondering. Cheers 🍻
The Anderson levelers would just sink into the sand.
And that size of trailer for Full-time is the best 👌
You need to have room for your belongings and room to live somewhat comfortable.
We just ordered an Alliance Valor 40v13 to basically live and travel in.
We needed the 13ft garage to haul 2 Can-Am Rykers because we don't want to have a chase vehicle.
In addition to airing down i think in soft sand you need to manually lock your front hubs
glad you used the leveling boards..... I use 2 x 12's or 2 x 14's.... much better
Get rid of music 🎶
Definitely always go into any area like that on an angle. You won't have that pinch point at front/back of trailer.
Would you twist rv frame at angle?
Those “Sandy” spots can be deceiving. Got a van struck for a bit. Boon docking is certainly a learning experience
ENJOY IT
Keep the vids coming. I learn something from every one I watch.
Thanks for showing that you are not perfect. Just like everyone watching the video. 😁. Good video.
WHY ARE YOU STILL DRIVING A SECOND CAR???
How I'm a 32 year commercial truck driver, and yocals like this are allowed to pull rigs like that
Can't handle it get a smaller one 😉
Why don't you have your kayaks mounted higher? It looks like they're several inches below your rear bumper level. I think their clearance would be an issue many times.
It has been.
You both take it easy be cReful. U think this summer u both could seek new territory. No one tours thru the northern states all the way up and across. Please consider it.
we can tell it was your 1st time using 4 wheel drive ( LOL )
That was a pretty view to wake up to in the morning.
I suspect that would be a nasty place to get in and out of during a rain.
Looks like ya made it hard on ya self man... should always try to unhook straight with the RV. Make things much easier! Shoot for 1 night I wouldn’t even unhook haha
Did you lock in the hubs because your steers weren't doing a thing
I may have missed it, But I didn't see you lock the front hubs, that Rig(truck & trailer) should not have gotten stuck in that child's sandbox, simply turning the knob on your dash does NOT fully engage the 4 wheel drive !!!
