  • D-Stock trains were replaced by newer S-Stock during 2015-2017 with the last one running in April 2017. A few months before they were all replaced, we followed District Line driver Frank Miller around for a day, to talk about the transition from the old to the new.
    The video just about the last day can be seen here: • Last D-Stock District ...

    I remember, when I was a little kid, and my parents would take me into London to go to the Science Museum, or something, we used to go on the Northern line from Waterloo to Embankment and then change for the District/Circle. I didn't know anything about the types of trains, or the difference between deep level and sub surface, but I always wanted to get the "one door" trains. They were something different to me. Sad to see them go.

      S stocks are modern and used by Sub surface Wich i believe Use Mainline hight There Tunnels are not Single track they are always double And Mostly Overground Deep Level are Mostly Underground All though they often do go overground The tunnels are Single track and they Do not use Mainlined Stock

    A thoroughly first-rate documentary, you two. This is the kind of visual and auditory gold that historians like myself will appreciate in a myriad of different ways in the mid-century point. And beyond.
    Well done, becoming part of transportation history! If we could only jump ahead to the 22nd century and see how they will look back at our world today. Your film-making will play a part of their intelligent analysis of our world and how we got around.

    Notice the D-Stock cab's moquette, it's the old Waterloo & City moquette from the 1992 Stock prior to Barman, there were also a few units that had the same moquette as the 1967 stock when they were refurbished, whilst others had the standard D-Stock moquette, and they were quite often mixed up. I believe the C-Stock also had some of these moquettes in the cab.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they just use whatever is left over from the last refurb they did for the cabs, obviously they take a little more care for the passenger compartment

    • @NC-002
      @NC-002 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alasdair Clift you are correct, nearly all cabs have the old moquette as it is less of a priority. Most stock types have their original moquettes or refurbish moquettes, such as the Jubilee, Bakerloo, Northern, Central, and Piccadilly Line trains.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know what my name is. I know some Piccadilly line cabs got Barman, a year or two before the passenger compartments received it, although I also saw some with the original refurb moquette

    • @NC-002
      @NC-002 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I haven't seen the cab with the Barman moquette, I much prefer the pre-Tube Lines moquette, when they were originally refurb'd. I'm very much against all of the lines receiving Barman, as I believe all of the other moquettes, including the dull original Northern Line moquette looks nicer, and if they were keeping Barman, keep it on one line!

    When you call the Trains on the District line D78 Stock. You reminded me of trips from my Nan and Grandad's in the early 80's. When being taken back home to East Ham from Plaistow where my Grandparents lived. My Nan would not want to get a new White train (D78 Stock) until a Red one came along. Sadly she died in 2011 so she never got to see the end of the White trains.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The red ones were the CO/CP stock, new in 1938 on the Met & Circle lines and transfered to the District to replace the Q Stock. I also lived in East Ham and as well as the CPs there were R Stock some were unpainted ally but most were painted white/off grey. Both types looked quite smart with their flared bodysides, a 3 car CO/CP survives in preservation at Quainton Road should you wish to see one in the flesh!

      I remember those red District Line trains. They didn't have the door opening buttons and they didn't hiss like a snake, when the doors opened.
      Those door opening buttons that used to be in the D Stock trains used to confuse people who didn't use the District Line on a regular basis. I've seen a couple of tourists sprinting up the inside of a carriage, because only the door at the other end opened.

      I have distant relations in Canada. When they came to London about 30 years ago one of them said that she found our Tubes made her feel a little claustrophobic.
      Of course, as you may know, the trains come in two sizes, smaller deep- level tube trains and larger sub-surface trains that are of a similar size to those on British main lines.

    I have a question - what is the reason for still having a whistle as a audible warning as opposed to a two tone horn for the underground trains?

    • @lachlanwoodsmith6064
      @lachlanwoodsmith6064 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dominic Ransom what is the point of a two tone horn? Here in NZ we don’t have bells on locos or two tones. We just have the horn, and that works fine.

    • @98dizzard
      @98dizzard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The horns are deafening in the tunnels so they use a whistle, similar to a depot whistle on mainline trains.

    • @SirDominic
      @SirDominic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel I That makes so much sense - thank you very much
      lachlan woodsmith - Tbh im not exactly sure. I would imagine that it has something to do with better audibility having two different tones which is why blue light services tend to use them but in terms of why specifically it has to be a two tone instead of a single i do not know im afraid. probably legislation somewhere along the line that said that all trains should have a horn and that needs to be a two tone.

    • @98dizzard
      @98dizzard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SirDominic two tone I believe is specified by the rule book. Alternating tones is more easily distinguished against background noise, and also improves the ability to distinguish the direction that the noise is coming from. It also adds a layer of redundancy incase one horn stops working (happens a lot in snow/freezing conditions)

    • @LinxFox
      @LinxFox 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Transport Hub I miss the C Stock & the D Stock because the District Line runs with the C69/77 Stock on three different sub-surface stock line trains. The District Line D Stock runs with The Circle Line - C Stock from Tower Hill to Gloucester Road, The District Line - C Stock (Edgware Road - Wimbledon Branch) from Earl's Court to Wimbledon and The Hammersmith & City Line - C Stock from Aldgate East to Barking. That's why I only like The C69/77 Stock & D78 Stock since they like run together.

    Sorry if this is a stupid question but are all Tube and suburban trains in the UK fully electric?

    • @jamesdunn1507
      @jamesdunn1507 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not a stupid question :) All passenger Tube Trains in London are electric and run off the fourth rail system. The vast majority of mainline suburban passenger trains are electric and run off either overhead wires or third rail systems. There are still some diesel suburban passenger trains but the majority are electric.
      Most of the diesel mainline passenger trains operate longer distance services.

    • @norbitonflyer5625
      @norbitonflyer5625 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Dunn:
      The only diesel services entirely within London now are the Greenford/Ealing shuttle, and the Barking - Gospel Oak line, which is waiting for its new electric trains to be ready. Diesel services are still quite common in other cities, and on some outer suburban services in London (although Chiltern, Wales, and East Midland are the only all-diesel franchises left).

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesdunn1507 We are beginning to remove the crazy situation of running Diesel trains over electrified lines.
      We still have the excellent BR Class 159 Diesel trains used on the London Waterloo to Exeter services (runs over 3rd rail from London Waterloo to Worting Junction, just outside of Basingstoke). At Worting Junction the line from London divides, the line to Weymouth via Southampton is all 3rd rail electriied now while the line to Exeter via Salisbury is not electrified, hence the need to use the Diesel Class 159.
      When the replacement for the Diesel loco hauled trains (Class 50, Class 47) that served Exeter was being considered I believe that bi mode Diesel & Electric traction was considered since part of the route was electrified but, as is the case for the Class 205 / 207 `Thumpers', the additional complication was not thought worth it in those less `green' times.
