I rember designing a website in the early 2000's with the original D-Stock Moquette colour scheme many years ago. The I.T. teacher was confused at my unusual choice of graphic design, and when asked where I got my inspiration, 'tube train seating upholstery' seemed to bewilder him. I was sooooo nerdy back then, and I was only 11.

Part of my beautiful memories in London was riding on these single-doored trains. The classic front, its PA system, the seats, the door, the sound...All these were deeply imprinted in my memories. Goodbye D-stock. Glad to have ever ridden on one :-(

D Stock trains looked and sounded their best prior to their refurbishment, especially during the 80's when they sounded very much like the 1983 Tube Stock.

I always remember being at Hammersmith station, and hearing D stocks departing and arriving as I went down to the platform. I'll also miss how you could see so many d stocks and and only like two circle trains during the stretch from glocester road to tower hill. The thing I will miss most is the sounds it makes when it hits welded track or track joint which bursts out rhythm in my ears. RIP D Stock. I wish I was there!!

  • @daggersdukc

I have lived at both ends of the District for 40 years on and off, and these trains were so well designed and built, apart from the too narrow doors. The pre refurb interior smell was the tube equivalent of damp dog. Musty yet somehow familiar, thus comforting.

  • @richardbaron7106
    @richardbaron7106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I remember being on Earl's Court in the morning on my way to Paddington when the station lady mentioned that it was the last day the D-stock was running. I used to catch it all the time when I worked in Bow and to me it was just another old Tube train.
To be honest, I prefer the S-stock now because you can walk through the train, it has air conditioning during the warmer months and there's decent heating in the colder months.

These trains will always be remembered, I came to Richmond and Kew Gardens in 2012 and I would always see these glorious trains. The only thing on my bucket list is to see one in real life. Converted or not. The clacking sound on the tracks and the motor sound will be in my head forever. It’s front and single-doors we’re so beautiful to watch leave Richmond and Kew Gardens. I almost cried when I heard the song at Kew and when I watched the last one leave for Upminster on April 21st, 2017. That was the last time I ever saw a D-Stock.

So many enthusiasts criticise the 1992 TS, albeit for it's maintenance liability; however I love the 1992 TS trains for their body-side window-glazing which extends into the roof-profile, a great design feature. I also love the body-profile which doesn't have a crease at waist-level thus creating maximum space for the interiors. I also love the ambience of the interiors for the dim lighting.

Before I was a professional entertainer/radio presenter, I drove buses on London Transport, the 207 from Uxbridge to Shepherds Bush. One afternoon on my way back to Uxbridge, at the traffic lights at Ealing Broadway, a lorry came round from the station, with a train carriage on the back, and it just got round, with, I SWEAR, barely 2 inches from my drivers cab. If it had hit my bus, imagine the accident report...How did the accident happen? WELL....THIS TRAIN CAME ROUND THE CORNER!!!! Shortly after that, just about every Friday afternoon, someone would crash into the back of my bus, in the bus stop. This went on for about 6 months. I transferred to the underground, I thought, you so and so's can't find me down here. SADLY FATE SHOWED ME I WAS WRONG! One morning at Northfields Depot, I was crossing the tracks in the train shed, to get to my train, when a train came through the shutters! I thought, "I'M OUTTA HERE!!!!" That's when I turned to being a professional entertainer, later, a radio presenter.

My last D-stock ride: 22 Jan 2017 Victoria - Tower Hill. (first train that pulled in!) I personally went to thank the driver when I got off.
    Goodbye D-stock - I SALUTE YOU!!

quite a few weeks ago me and my friend spoke to the driver on the district who let us in the cab to take a picture who said he didn't like the D stock as the stop markers are different to the S stock. he sounded similar to Bisley00 I think that's what his name is who was a district line driver on youtube.

My favorite London Underground train. I remember going on them in the 80s and I thought they were pure quality with their Aluminium skinned carriages and the elegant single outer doors that looked so ultra modern and clean in design.
They were quiet and powerful when pulling out of a station and of course were made by Metro-Cammell at Washwood Heath, England before the Company was taken over.
I wonder why they are being replaced; I guess in these times where labour is more expensive than in the past the bean counters decide to pull the plug on keeping older designs going, I dunno. After all the wearing parts like bogie bearings will presumably have been changed many times in their long life.
On the other hand new trains are usually lighter and have regen braking to save energy.

When I saw a D-stock at Richmond last week while waiting for my South West train to Reading, I thought nothing other than "What a surprise, long time no see!" I wasn't expecting that to be "Good bye" as well.. :(

    I learnt how to drive the overground trains (465, 377, 375, 387 and 395.)
But I am still learning how to drive the D stock, jubilee, s stock, bakerloo and Northern lines.

The thing that made this sad was that unlike the A and C stocks, these really had a lot more life in them. I’m glad so many have been reused by Vivarail. I’ll always miss the old D stock trains though, so many memories of them.

D stock were some reliable and tough machines. Their distant relative, Hong Kong MTR's M-Train, also made by Metro-Cammell, are still going strong even their retirement has started this year.

In the MTR of Hong Kong, we have the same trains since 1979 (and a lot of them), wondering why these D-Stock trains need to retire so early.

One thing which will be missed is the transverse seating, which is much better than the longitudinal seating on the S-stock.

A similar event happened on the 13:09 to Sha Tin on 6th May 2022, the last ever service operated by the MLR, ending a 40-year run. The captain had an announcement about the train's history as it departed.
The atmosphere was even greater than this D stock farewell. There were more than 3000 passengers onboard the final train, and even more were at Sha Tin station to send it off as it left for the depot.

I can remember seeing these brand new coming out of the works at Washford Heath. I was a freight guard (don't exist any more!) at Holbeck TMD in Leeds, and we had one working to Birmingham (I think it was passenger actually). And road-learning and working the line I could see the gleaming new trains in the distance.

The D-stock was great, but I can't say I prefer it to the S-stock. The S-stock has by far the best motor sound of any modern train.

Why is this train retiring just after approximately 30 years? Here in montreal (Canada) our subway trains (MR-63) were running since the subway first opened in 1966 like for over 50 years. Although there about to retire very soon.

I remember the first time i rode the d-stock we coasted into EBY and i couldn't believe how silent the train was... its a shame i missed the last ever one :/ i used to get so excited by the prospect of riding a D-stock over the s... a few times I traveled Uxbridge to west ruislip via as many lines as i could and it was always disappointing when an s-stock rolled in with Ealing Broadway written on the top xD
