  • Suzuki's compact crossover is growing. The old SX4 is now called Classic, and the bigger, new car is called the SX4 S-Cross. It is based on the S-Cross Concept unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The S-Cross competes against Nissan Qashqai. There are many similarities between the two cars, but which one to choose?
    Sorry, I made a mistake: in the Qashqai there's a 1.2 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, as danube41 rightly pointed out. I shall punish myself accordingly for making this mistake.

    I drove the car on friday. I tested Sportage, ix35, Qashqai (older), in my car I drive Yeti. And I can say... S-Cross is No. 1 for me. I feel very good inside, the drive was perfect for me. I really consider CVT /I have one on MB-A, and I know how to drive on the CVT gearbox/ with ALL DRIVE.... I love that car even I have no emotions about Suzuki company...

    I bought a new Vitara based on your review in 2016. Now I am thinking about an upgrade and here I am again, re-visiting your reviews.

    We opine : Our Suzuki SX4 S-Cross 66 reg 1.6 litre unleaded petrol model, is quieter than our previous 'Chevy'. It comes with safety features such auto breaking if the program deems the approach to rapid for safety, this came with flashing inside warning lights. The wheel pressures can be set for comfortable driving and the sat nav will show only roads deemed to be comfortable to drive, there are other settings eg economical. A variety of option screens from a change gear suggestion for optimal fuel saving to a setting of how many miles the fuel tank content will give. The side mirrors are electrical folding in and have indicator lights on them. More grip can be obtained eg for snow. The side lights are always on. The car can be locked by rubberised buttons at the side and boot doors provided the keys are within a set distance, and the doors don't lock if keys are still in the car. Starting is by button again only if the keys are near; the actual key is concealed within a case that has a lock unlock/feature, this applies to the 1.6 litre model we have. It has a limit speed setting eg 50mph, that can be set, and likewise cruise control but we don't use these last two. The braking even at 70mph in emergencies, works well. Lots of other features too. There is a camera that workes when reversing with parking lines that show on the screen in the front, which latter also shows DAB radio stations and the SatNav routes.
    We chose the 2016 1.6 unleaded petrol version rather than the 2017 version, for the larger engine. This review is purely our assessment of how we opine the car features are.

    If they did a proper automatic, I don't think they'd put in a 6 speed box, they'd probably put the old fashioned 4 speed auto unit. I think CVT are really good for town driving, that's one thing for sure. That's the only advantage I've seen coming from my dad's B class 1.5 CVT.

      FYI - I've got a diesel, 1.6 auto, with allgrip and 6 gears. Not too common.

    Hi Marek ,I watch you reviews all the time and I think they are great! Your English is phenomenal!! I have a question to which I hope you will give me the answer. I want to by Suzuki Vitara (petrol,manual, 4x4) with panoramic roof..Basically top of the range model. I just want to hear from you what is the driving difference between Vitara and S cross with the same engine and both 4x4? Are there any differences apart from size and looks? (I like Vitara look much more, and I could live with less boot space) Is S cross softer, more comfortable or they use same suspension? And one more question -Which engine is more quiet? 1.6 petrol or 1.4 turbo? MANY THANKS!!!! Looking forward to your reply!!

      I haven't driven the 1.4 turbo. As far as I'm concerned Vitara and S-Cross are pretty similar to drive, i.e. not great to drive. But Vitara also appeals to me more.

    for the extension of ground clearance you can change to 215-60-17"tires, adding 40 mm. extra clearance!
    also speedindication will be rather exact after this.

    Hi Marek, I'm concerned about the ground clearance. It looks pretty low to the ground, even lower than than the classic SX4 which wasn't that high to begin with. Is this car really suitable even for unpaved roads? I'm not speaking about serious off-roading, just the typical unmade dirt tracks with potholes you often find going to someone’s summer house.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You're right, ground clearance is not it's strongest point. To put it into perspective, here are ground clearance figures:
      - old SX4 - 175 mm
      - SX4 S-Cross - 170 mm (or 165 on 17 inch tyres)
      - Jimny - 190 mm
      - Grand Vitara (5d) - 200 mm
      - Nissan Qashqai - 180 mm
      But from my experience, if a regular hatchback cannot get through, a crossover won't do much difference. People buy crossovers for extra practicality (bigger boot, more space for passengers, better view of the road), not necessarily because they are better on unpaved roads.

    Hi Marek, thanks for the review! You compare the 1.6 petrol S-Cross to the Qashqai but that is a 1.2 turbo-charged petrol. How do the two engines compare? I'm interested in the manual version and will be doing a combination of short urban trips and longer motorway journeys. I've watched your Nissan Qashqai review and I'm concerned the 1.2 petrol engine will not be very quiet and relaxing on longer journeys. Also, I'm not entirely clear why you recommend the Qashqai over the S-Cross for lower trims?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shit, you're right. I totally forgot it was a 3 cylinder turbocharged engine. With a manual you have to downshift more often in the S-Cross. Unfortunately both of these cars are relatively loud at motorways speeds.
      In some markets higher trim Qashqai is much more expensive than the S-Cross. So much more expensive that I would probably buy the S-Cross. However in lower trim the price difference small enough to make the Qashqai my car of choice.

    How's the fuel efficiency? Every seller in Australia is claiming 5.8L/100KM, is this true?

    This car has very serious resonance problem in China now,many drivers has the eardrum injury or feel dazz when on the status of engine 1200rpm on CVT types.Did the test driver discovered it?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't hear anything unusual. This car is made in Hungary. Perhaps the problem concerns vehicles made in other Suzuki factories in the Far East?

    • @yrefrank
      @yrefrank 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah,all reported cars were made by Chang'an-Suzuki,which is a joint venture company in China. The factory sent people to re-flashed the TCM chip to change the engine ldle speed to 1000-1100 to avoid the 1200rpm area,but it didn't work.
      Now customers guess may be is the assembly accuracy problem of the shock absorber.
      I've heard that about 500 customers gathered up ,planned to take legal action to Chang'an-Suzuki.
      So may be it is not the car designing problem but the QA problem,it still a nice car.
