This video made me change my mind about James Hype. Despite not liking the genres he normally plays, the guy is undoubtedly skilled. And I was under the impression he was a jerk, but he seems to be quite a normal guy. #respect
Same! The way he does sometimes sort of looks like he has this superhero complex, but tbh after watching this my mind is also changed, and his skill level is out of this world, so yeah maybe he deserves a little bit superstar status :P
He is down to Earth and has got skills. He works very hard. I purchased the Digital Dj Tips course and he is very open with sharing so many things he's learnt. His style might not be for all dj's but he does instill confidence for using and know your way around the decks.
The music and style is really not my cup of tea, but huge respect for James after watching this. He’s clearly worked very hard to get to where he is and I dread to think the hours that man must spend setting cues and loops in rekordbox.
Totally agree! James has a special talent to do what he does on the decks. I personally would hate to have to prepare my sets as much as he does, but I understand that kind of preparation is needed for his style of DJing.
A five hour gig and he said he showed up with like 40 tracks. I love that. I have a whole new respect for him. I knew he was good but he is also very normal and humble.
pity he cant scratch. laidback luke has been doing this for 10 years ever since hes first pioneer dj sound show. The tricks shown here are already done before, just that pity he cant scratch. Also speaking of best DJs. this is the king of djs, masterclass th-cam.com/video/Sa9UhaUePm8/w-d-xo.html
It's insane the amount of work this guy puts in to prep his sets. Takes a lot of time to prepare each of the tracks in rekordbox and then deliver on stage, mad respect!
Its not that complicated, its all about a good musical ear and being well preparated. I think James Hype is one of the best DJs because he's making that work before every set!
I’ve been around house music and DJing since 1989 and i must say i have a whole new love for the art since following james hype,so refreshing to see the mad skills and the way he remixes on the fly,who does this.
Fun fact: James wasn't in the top 100 for DJ Mag this year. Like how bro. He's one of the only producer DJ's that actually makes it on the top 10 list for me as far as skill based DJ's in my opinion.
The music and style is really not my cup of tea, but huge respect for James after watching this. He’s clearly worked very hard to get to where he is and I dread to think the hours that man must spend setting cues and loops in record box.
I have alot of respect for djs who prepare sets. I just turn my system on, throw on a record and go from there sure, I have to be dead on with track selection on the fly, but guys who can prepare 4 deck sets are on another level
I"m DONE. I never even imagined. You really gonna put in some work but just listening to the hot cues... I heard 3 other arraignments that are possible!!! WoW!! Thanks! And then QUANTIZE for the joint! I gotta lot of work to do!
Wow!!! I took the intro of this very deep. Everything happens for a reason. James thought dj equipment was remix/production equipment and it has shaped the way he dj's in very unique amazing ways. Imagine if people laughed at James or didn't take him seriously. The more we love people, the more we let their uniqueness out and let them florish.
This was a great interview and tutorial. More I watch James Hype versus some other DJs the more I like. So much planning, practice and creativity. Smooth transitions are great but with the new DJ tools available I love to see the creative stuff! Keep smashing it man 👌🏻
What he says about learning from open format djing... its all about reading the crowd and learning from that. Was the hardest part of djing live learning. Love this video
I First saw James Hype on a short video on Ticktock back 2 yrs ago and i thought OMG who is this guy. Best dj i have ever seen apart from Carl Cox and the late Tony De Vit.
So I have been watching dj videos and gears and production like non stop for a month now, first now I noticed James , hats of man, I was just getting this overwhelmed feeling and now the fish is back in the water. Just awesome thanks for inspiring me back-on-track.
So cool to see the stuff I do on my 400 is exactly the same as what James does but on 4 decks, honestly makes me feel satisfied with my own improvement over the years, biggup James for making me want to dj again 💪
I like how this man has really disproven the traditional notion (which I'd believed for years) that one must first be well-versed in the culture to become great. What he did have is the sense to respect and learn the culture as he went, now he's world class and well deserves it!
I have been using this format for djing over the past 5 years ....but with NI .... his proformances have made me look at pioneer again.... I completely get what he's doing
Live DJing this way is real. Hate prerecording DJ’s. A DJ is a real DJ when he is vulnerable for error. I prefer vinyl and do not like overly using effects, but hey you rock and have skills doing it live: respect.
in another video he analysis, he explained he made a mistake by missing to run a deck on time and then he had to change his routine in real time with public on his back; no one noticed the error, the result was flawless. this dude is really skilled
I haven't dj'd since 1210s (yep, it was a long time ago) but saw a video of him and wondered how he dj's sans headphones on 4. Some serious skillz there. 👏 as much live bootleg remixing as mixing. If it can be mastered allows so much creativity and freedom. Hats off.
Read an interview the other day where he talks about wearing IEMs when playing live, he has the master in one ear and the cue in the other. Edit - Nevermind, he covers it in this video!
I used to think James Hype was a clown. But as I watched him, it was I who is the clown for thinking that in the first place. Hype fam forever! He is the truth.
WHEN HE WILL REACH THAT TOP 10 ? Even he says (in another interview) that's not the most important thing he deserves that spot, he has been working harder than any one and skills are dope.
Huge fan of James! What a performer. Thanks for the vid! (Found it two years too late LOL). (Greetings from 60yr old techno dj and learned to mix on the Technics SL 1210 MK2 😂)
It is really informative video and thanks for DJ Mag team and James Hype for this inside look. I appreciate. But as a producer, I'd like to mention about something. When James played all decks together, although they're compatible to each other, it made me feel it's too crowded, and there's no room for frequencies, then in course of video, when I looked at the frequency knobs, I realized all mid frequencies were tweaked to the right side which take up space of the frequencies. So I'd like to recommend for James to arrange the knobs not only according to harmonic compatibility but also to frequency levels. I wouldn't call myself a DJ yet, I'm more focused on producing currently, I'll practice DJing later on in course of time like James did, I mean James Hype is much much better DJ than me and also even better than most of the big DJs currently but it is what it is. I think what I've told was worth to mention. Thanks.

James does a lottttt of prep work. He doesnt improv his sets at all, and thats okay. hes amazing at what he does.
Dj mag award should be given to this guy.
True !
Imagine a world where awards were given to people who actually meet the criteria for said award.
How is this man not much bigger, humble and great mixing and remixing skills
Cuz the musics cheese af
He destroys great tracks but like he says at The beginning of the video
This didn’t age well. James hype is poppin of. 2 sets at EDC this May. And #1 song rn

In my opinion the best DJ in these days. Most of the DJs only focus in produce music but he has a great technique.

What a legend
Its not that complicated, its all about a good musical ear and being well preparated. I think James Hype is one of the best DJs because he's making that work before every set!

It's because the Top 100 DJ list is a popularity contest and has nothing to do with mixing skill unfortunately

oh my god that's mad, so he basically remixes tunes and layers on the spot. That's a fresh take on DJing I love
