I've been using snap traps. May need to look at this

yes, we also use snap traps (or one that is similar). we got them from our friends at Big Bear Homestead. They work great as well, but as I said ... you have to reload and all that junk. :)

@@PrattFamilyHomestead Check out the "made2catch" metal snap traps. They're of good quality. Stainless, burnished or brass even I believe.
      Enjoy.

Cant say its a "for sure" thing but my great Uncle used to paint lye on base boards where rats normally ran. It cleared up our rat problem within a few months. The idea behind this is: rats sweat through their feet. This allows the lye to adhere to their feet. I can only surmise that it may cause a burning sensation so the rats lick their feet. The lye enters their bodies and death follows soon afterwards. Just a thought and you would know best if you want to try it. BTW, I wish you and your family the best this season and an even better 2020!

Rats are clever. That's why we won the race to be first in Chinese astrology.
Or maybe they're on holiday because we're entering the Year of the Metal Rat.
P.S. This video really tested My self control. ;-)
I wanted desperately to click at the end but resisted and watched it through.
I also wonder if this will become a Pavlov's dogs trigger.
The chickens and cats hear the snap of the trap and they learn that means "fresh meat" for dinner.

Oh they are so clever!! I can TOTALLY see this being a Pavlovs dog thing :) But that is OK since no poisons or anything are used!

I actually saw a video where the rat got smart enough to use a stick to trip a standard rat trap, and then ate the bait. These are some smart critters.

    Expensive, but very effective.
Added bonus, scavengers will dispose of the bodies for you.

Is it possible that the A24 can kill a Grey squirrel like the A18?

I am not sure to tell you the truth.

The A18 was designed for squirrel sized aninals, the A24 for mice and rats.
I think they have an A11for skunks and possums.

We have a feral cat and a ferret that is a pro at disposing of any critters coming into the food forest .The chicken house is off the ground and the chicken tractor is moved every day or two so really traps are really not needed . Your chicken house is a anaerobic salute for Cryptococcus gattii to just about every flesh eating illness known to man . White wash kills most pathogens .Best Wishes to your endeavors in 20 20 . FFP

Thank you. No flesh eating illness yet, hopefully we can keep a perfect record! :)

@@PrattFamilyHomestead By far one of the best traps. 12 clean kills in my backyard.

At $200-$300 depending on where you look. It is way out of my price range. I'm inspired to make one for squirrels using a 12v solenoid valve, a trigger switch, a small propane tank (for compressed air) an aluminum piston I can machine and a 12v battery. Thanks for sharing.

Trying to kill rats but it looks like you still have feed bags that they may be feeding on.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead

I forget what exactly is in this video .... but we do keep an extra empty feed bag in the feed stall as a trash bag for things like wipes when we are milking the goats. Other than than I need to go back and see what is in the video! Thank you!
