The sound is the baffle/valve in the regulator. Usually its a sound found in gas regulators like on a grill. Sometimes you can tap on the regulator and work it loose. take it back and exchange it.
Real bummer i was really wanting to see the little fellow to succeed. Thank you for sharing as always my friend, hope the family is doing great. Everyone keep yourselves and love ones safe and healthy and remember to SMILE 😊God Bless 🙏
Maybe that sound is for when a person is painting model trains?
🤣🤣🤣
Interesting product glad you reviewed it one of the reasons why I’m a proud Patreon member is you provide these amazing videos that help me make better decisions about spending the money I choose to with wisdom versus blind ambition stupidity, with a reckless of abandonment the rivals of the hurricanes that beat upon my shoresof my soul. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend be well be you.
I think that this is probably just like the Tootie, but has a subframe and a cover, with a few more things added on. The cover is just amplifying the sound like a speaker box. As far as the "Popeye" sound, my guess is that during assemble they have teflon tape partially covering the air pathway and causing a reed effect, like a clarinet. I'm sure they'd trade it out or if you pulled that regulator off, you might be able to see something. It's annoying, but it's not effecting performance, and I don't really see a safety concern. For me I don't think all the extra fluff is worth it compared to the Fortress. I did pick up the folding two wheel cart they sell and mounted the Fortress to it and added a hook for coiling the hose on. I got tired of lugging it around and now with the cart I love it. It's a perfect fit and when it's parked it's sitting on the rubber feet of the compressor. It's not a heavy duty cart or anything, but it's plenty good for this purpose and fairly inexpensive. I could add a T, two regulators, and two airbrush stands to the cart and still be under the Blackwidow price point.
Hey barbatos, thanks to this video and Uber Eats, i was finally able to purchase the Black Widow trigger airbrush and the compressor. Unfortunately, i ran into the same issue with the compressor whistling. i tried looking this issue up through your comment section, and Lo and behold, you might have to switch to a different airbrush. I believe one side is meant for the trigger style airbrush, and the other side is meant for any regular style airbrush. It definitely stopped whistling afterward, so i wanna thank you, but especially everyone in the comments, inadvertently helping me out ❤
Thanks for the sound demo...that's all I needed to hear...good video..
What I would like to know is how well it holds up through continuous use (2 hours or more) on a regular basis. (I use my compressor for airbrush events.)
I have heard other people say that they have a whistle as well. It’s gonna be a pass for me. I have a tooty. It’s just about perfect for what I need.
I kept waiting for you to swap out airbrushes. It could be that simple. Try switching to a different airbrush.
What compressor do you recommend out of all youve tested? My main features are furst and foremost is ultra quiet. 2nd is with a tank. Thanks. Love the vids
This one is the quietest for sure and performs great
amzn.to/456jtoK
Followed by the Tooty
amzn.to/3VqmMUI
They both perform great. The Tooty is built better but I haven't had any troubles with the other one. The choice is yours
Ok, trouble shooting procedure. Get a shorter hose, by like half. If the whistle tone changes, the cause is BEHIND the airbrush and hose. Think of a trombone - changing the length of the pipe changes the tone.
In order to create the vibration we're hearing, its most likely something tight that needs to be a bit tighter. How many fittings between the tank and the hose?
It's been confirmed it was defective. And a viewer here has one and it doesn't make the whistle sound at all. Harbor Freight however confirmed it was defective
@@barbatosrex9473 Thats a relief. I hope H.F.'s noting it defective means a replacement.
Steamboat Willy approves of this compressor.👍
8:16 All Aboard! 🚂
Too bad. I’d return it.
I am
Chu Chu chugga chuggah chugga chu chu
I think tha lt noise might be the airbrush! It's normally cause by a backflow or overflow, when the air can't flow out fast enought it sometimes pushes out the paint cup.
I was screamin at the monitor to switch airbrushes to see it it was that...but noooo.
@@blueline308 yeah that's why we normally do a water test to figure what's wrong when it come to new gear.
@barbarosrex ... did / could you try w another air brush to see if that's it? Maybe turn it down on that side to 25?
I’ll resurrect this comment thread. Mine did the exact same noise with every airbrush in the beginning. It come with quick disconnects meant to connect to the compressor end, using those ended up solving the popeye whistle. I imagine doing direct hose introduced some kind of kink or restriction, but regardless of the problem, using their quick disconnects solved it.
@Capn_starsky so it might be a defect with the hose, try using a different hose and connect it directly or try using teflon tape to see if that fixes it?
Note the only reason I know about teflon is because my larger Air Compressor had air leaks all over. I had to dismantle every connector and reassemble with telflon!
Hahahaha, I cannot stop thinking on Popeye while hearing that sound it makes.
Should have printed it blue and badged it the Thomas the train edition
Robert,
Did you try switching airbrushes?
Apparently they also have a Black Widow line of airbrushes, would love to see you test them
I have the black widow trigger style airbrush. It comes with .3 and .5 needle/nozzles as well as fan caps for both sizes.
It's actually really decent for $70. It feels solid, sprays well, cleans easy.
The jury is out for longevity and only time will tell.
@@wiscoutvadventures6403let hope they will offer parts like they do for there full size paint guns.
I bought the trigger airbrush black widow and it works great so I'm betting the regular duel action works the same
Send it to me 👀 I don’t care if it makes noise
Did you get the limited edition Popeye the Sailor man version? 😂
i always wanted a compressor/steam whistle so I can pretend that I'm on a tug boat while I paint.
Thanks BR.
Try switching the air brushes, just for giggles. See if the whistle follow the air brush.
Nice looking but too expensive for me.
Yeah, that was my first thought, trying various combinations to track down the problem
Sounds like a problem with the diaphragm in the pressure regulator. I have heard a similar sound from truck air horns with bad diaphragms in them.
Just tested mine, no issues. Tried two different brushes (one black widow, one not) and various pressures to see if over driving it would reproduce what you saw. No problems here. I've had this one since the weekend but first test, so you did insprie me to get off my butt and hook it up. It's a keeper for me if remains as is. Harbor Freight should take yours back w/o question, i'd be surprised if they asked you for evidence other than your word.
Is this the "Steamboat Willy" edition?
Sounds like a tooty
There’s a tiny Link inside playing the ocarina for you. 😂
Did you try swapping guns or lowering the output pressure on that side? Maybe it whistles at higher pressures. Maybe it will go away if you lower the pressure. If it’s supposed to be used with small airbrushes running more than 25psi should be rare. Just a thought.
For the record I tried everything you said and more
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks. With that I would say that the regulator on that side is defective or has something loose.
The Black Widow seems similar to the Gaahleri GT-918 in size. But the Gaahleri has but a 1-litre tank and is less expensive at $130 + shipping. The Gaahleri is not so heavy and seems quieter, and is truly a portable airbrush compressor. I don't think I'll be switching to the Black Widow compressor anytime soon. Thanks for your informative reviews!! Perhaps the Black Widow airbrushes will be suitable test subjects.
change airbrush guns.
Turns out it was defective. I tried everything suggested. Harbor Freight and a few of you guys here confirmed it was a defect
Sounds like your airbrush since it’s not doing it on your other airbrush other wise you should have checked some of your airbrushes to see if that fix’s the whistle.
For the money, hell no! I got a California compressor works great
Great brand
was anticipating this compressor but seems like a hard no from me.
Cartoon background🤣🤣🤣
Someone beat me to it but it should be renamed. Sounds like a train whistle, toot toot.
Your reviews have helped me with a lot of my purchases.
One thing with draining an air tank, what you're calling the water drain valve is the main drain valve, the other valve is a safety overpressure valve and using them regularly to drain the tank will leave water in the tank, which will rust it out. Safety valves have a tendency to become stuck open if they're activated too much.
what is the proper way to drain the tank? I've always just used the valve on the bottom
@@logawnio The valve on the bottom is the right way, it forces the water out.
@@logawnio yeah you want the pressure still in the tank.. maybe not ALL of it... which you can bleed out with the watertrap or the airbrush itself.. but the more pressure in the tank.. the more force the air is going to have while escaping taking much of the water with it. If you completely drain the tank of air before you open it.. the opening of the valve isn't going to push much water out. YOu will have to hold it at an angle to drain it for longer.
Looks like renaming of the gahleeri compressor........and I sold mine it just didn't hold pressure good enough for 2 airbrushes going at the same time .......the video you did was good just using them both at the same time pressure went way down , too far down........be weary of these type of compressors .......you rock and roll though thanks for the content
Moisture trap.is loose or plastic trap part isn't sealed properly ........it's most likely an easy fix........my previous comment , not so sure now as it actually holds 70 psi .......please hold both brushes going at same time while tank fills see if it can handle the air output......
Mine works fine. I dunno if maybe you hot a decective one or not. But I run a swallow tail and a paasche H series siphon brush and neither one make that noise!
It was confirmed to be a defect. They took it back
It looks nice but it's a little bit too much an too big for me an it's a bit out of my price range
I just bought the black widow compressor and mine works perfectly with no train noises lol so must be a bad valve or something on your test compressor
I just got one, and there is no whistling. might want to try the quick release attachment for the unit, or a different airbrush. Mine works great.
Sounds like a issue with the gun and or restricted dryer on that side. (Defective dryer)
Maybe it's your gun. Switch them out and see if it still whistles.
I did, same results
I am seriously looking into getting the two Black Widow by Spectrum dual action gravity fed airbrushes that has just hit Harbor Freight store shelves.
You have the air pressure too high.
It did the same when I turned it down. I filmed it to show Harbor Freight when I return it. I figured they would ask me to do that plus switch the airbrushes.
Well, the whistle is an issue but I'm very sure that was just a bad one. Maybe the regulator? It's unfortunate because it's a very nice looking unit. The spider emblems on the gauges, the case, the chrome... very sharp. I would 100% consider buying that!
It was confirmed to be defective. They took it back but they didn't have another in stock.
I was just looking at this at Harbor freight. Thanks for the video!
I wanted to love this compressor….love the design and look….but mine never really shuts off…and goes to a quiet putt putt putt before it comes back on..and overheating after 10-15 min at 40-50psi is def not good!!! I may be returning it for a refund!
Bring that baby back, I did
I bought my trigger style black widow airbrush kit yesterday (5-26-24) .... Can't wait to try it out... I have an old Workhorse brand 1.5 gallon compressor that I bought from Meyers 20 years ago for 44 bucks and I rigged up a 2er3 gallon air tank with a t fitting... Can't wait to give it a go next weekend....🙂👍
Spectrum is a harbor freight brand
Swap the airbrushes.
I did
I think it’s too expensive….thanks for the review.and too loud.
9:50 TOOT TOOT All aboard the barabtos train! 🚂🚂
Should have switched brushes to the opposite hoses to see if it still happened and if the noise changed sides.
Turned out to be defective, they took it back but they didn't have another one in stock and I never went back to get another
Popeye the sailor man.... TOOT TOOT
Did you try swapping hoses, i.e. swap the left hose & airbrush & see if it happens? Also try swapping the pressures, 30 on the left & 20 on the righrt.
I tried everything you mentioned and more. I've from others they got the same noise
Maybe it's telling the air pressure is to high...
Looks like my iwata but don't sound like it
I got the one gallon Fortress on sale out the door for $130. No whistling, rarely comes on while I'm painting (love that one gallon capacity). I have it setup to run two airbrushes, but I found one is more than enough, so I set up the second as a blower gun, which I found to be a lot more handy. All told, maybe $150 invested. Great review!!!!
I have a 2 gallon Fortress, it's awesome
Have you ever found out the problem with the Black widow air compressor?
It was confirmed defective. They took it back but had none in stock so I never got another one
Try swapping the airbrush and testing it again.
I did, same results
Dang that sucks, I was thinking about replacing my tankless for one of these. Thank you so much for these videos you always save me money lol.
Get the new tootsie instead with the 3L tank. My tootie is awesome!
@PhunkyMunk Holy smokes and it's cheaper too, thank you sir!
try a different airbrush. see if it still does it
I probably couldn't use that no name as my compressor is a pretty whimpy on 😆
Teflon tape in the air steam of a line
I plan on getting their airbrush this Sunday after breakfast.....😉
Just returned it after a day, started leaking on both cups.
@@godfather1116 maybe in can be fixed.....
No offense to anyone - de-China-fying things is an actual process. I would consider doing some research, see if people are rebuilding these. If so, that may be your make it or break it point.
When is the black primer test comming?
# 1... 🙂👍
I can't believe you didn't swap the airbrushes, or even changed the pressure to troubleshoot!
He said he tried all of that before shooting in another comment
Can you give a
Connection to airbrush paint please 🙏🥺
Not sure what your asking?? 😮
Airbrush akimbo.
John Woo style.
Heavy metal!!!
Great, as if harbor freight needed more of my money.. (edit, nevermind. Underwhelming)
Spectrum is a harbor freight brand - normally their compressor HVLP guns, with black widow being their most premium. Pretty solid from what I hear.
LOOKS premium, but for the price, the 1 (or 2 gallon) Fortress both have more capacity, are (allegedly, at least) quieter, AND cheaper! 2 gallon even has 2 outlets and almost quadruple the capacity.. bummer
@@MAJMonkey my BlackWidow is half the db of the fortress, even after break in.
@magusreaver Which fortress? I'm merely going off of advertised DBA which is 57 for the Fortress 1 Gal and 62 DBA for the black widow. The one in the video sounded at least as loud as my 1 gal, but again I don't have the black widow personally. I could definitely be wrong/the numbers off
@@MAJMonkey the 2 gallon was twice as loud as the widow
@magusreaver Interesting! I think the 2 gallon is advertised at 60 DBA. I know they have the super quiet and super performance, and I'd expect the performance to be loud. I don't think they have a performance in the 2 gallon size, though. Weird! Makes me wish you could mess with these a bit more in store
Did you switch guns to make sure its not the gun itself?
Yeah I did everything, it was confirmed by the company the next day it was a defective unit. I returned it but they didn't have another one in stock
Choo-choooo. 🚂.
Just got mine yesterday and also bought a 1 year warranty should in case there is any issues in the future. Mine works perfectly. I hook up and Iwata eclipse for details and a cheapo $20 point zero for heavier coverage. No Popeye whistling sounds it works perfect. I don't know if it would push a HVLP automotive spray gun for murals.
It says bY Spectrum because spectrum was its own spray gun company until harbor Freight bought them, they didn't change anything besides make themselves the only distrubutor of Spectrum products so no, its not by harbor freight, its made by Spectrum
Thanks for the review. I have the Black widow Trigger style airbrush. Seems pretty decent for the money. Its a close second to my Swallowtail due to the lack of the .7 needle/nozzle.
I do like that it came with fan caps for the .3 and .5 needle/nozzles.
I had wondered about the compressor but at $200, it shouldnt be so loud. I will have to pass and stick with my current unit.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new airbrushes.
You got a bad one
I did, they took it back
I got the new trigger air brush and have been really happy with it. With the fan cap it definitely uses more air but with works great
turn both regulators up to 30, see if the other causes the sound, if one is fine and the other is note then it is the noisy regulator with a diaphragm problem.
if it happens with both turned up to 30 it can either be regulator design flaws, or another single component like a check valve. also switch the airbrush to make sure its not that.
i just saw this the other day and was curious about it, but that whistle is a dealbreaker. unrelated, but have you heard of the color cubes by sarah renae clark? I saw them reviewed on another painting channel, but they remind me of an exhaustive version of the color swatch cutting mat you reviewed last year.
It looks like they have the typical removable collars for adding a brush holder (usually red in colour) at the front end but they seem to be blocked under the Psi adjuster knob 🤷♂
With the weight of this one, it's more like "Welcome back to the bench(press)."
Appears this unit has had an allergic reaction to the Black Widow bite.
I'll stick with my ancient craftsman That sounds like a 747.
What forums do you frequent?
Just picked mine up today!! They didn’t have the airbrush but can’t wait to give this beaut a run 😁
Chooo chooo chooo, i don't know what is causing that happen, but it's kinda cool, haha. hope it is safe
I need that mini gun and a compressor too run it too! maybe the California air tools 8gallon 1hp
I think it’s to let you know what side you are using when airbrushing
No nothings wrong with it, its just the train whistle edition 😂
It could be the compressor filter where you can release air
I got the pencil brush and just love it!
Chooo chooo!!! All I hear from that is a train lol.
Popeye tooting his pipe😂
Nice was just saw this online
8:25 toooooooooooooooooooooooooot! xD
