I would be surprised if that's actually why it's there. Tension and release is why TMV does this, the idea that the listener should have to pass some sort of trial to experience the song is a weird one, what would it add to the experience? Tension is one thing, but putting the listener through something unpleasant just to make the meat of the song sound better in comparison is weak, and TMV would never use such a cheap trick.

I would have liked the album a lot more when I first heard it if this was on it. The band said they didn't put it on because there was no room, but I think this would've been worth splitting it into two discs.

Legend has it, they did offer the album originally as a double to the record label but they said no for whatever reason and since Omar wasn’t willing to cut down any of the songs to make it actually fit, it was left as a b-side. Don’t quote me on that though

I would be surprised is the original Suspiria was a big inspiration to this album, and indeed The Mars Volta in general, especially the brightly coloured surrealism
Well, in some instrumental parts this song actually vaguely reminds me of the Goblins, the Italian prog rock band that wrote and played the soundtracks of some Dario Argento movies, including Deep Red and the original Suspiria.

Not enough space for a CD release. CDs can only hold about 80 minutes of music. All of the tracks on the final album totaled about 76 minutes, so there was no room left for this track.
There's an edited version of the album on YT that includes the title track and tries to remove the more tedious interludes etc with a download link - I highly recommend it
What do you mean the bed of broken windows part is a fucking amazing climax to the song and segways well into the reprise of sarcophagi (which would have been the transition point to Cygnus had the record label not have been shit brained)
Great song and great album. However, the ambient noise was always a self-indulgent habit I wish they could have dropped. It would be MORE progressive to edit down the album by removing the ambient “textures.”
Frances is great. But there's so much bullshit that it becomes a chore at times. I get the ambiance is a part of this band's soul, but holy shit I just wanna listen to the fucking song! I'm sick of having my ears torn out by the intro of this, or the outro of Cygnus, and seriously if I wanna listen to birds I can go to my back yard.
