Jokes on you.. My University actually used BLENDER to teach us and was succesful in getting us bigger marks than if they were to get us in Maya
Answer: for the same reason this video is sponsored by skillshare
MONEY!
Why try divide these two? Make full use of them both instead. End of discussion!
Software are tools. Nowadays, any artist has to know several programs: Maya or Blender, but also Houdini, Unreal Engine, ZBrush, Substance Painter, etc. A person who wants to work in this sector will always have to study. They must continue learning throughout their life. Times are changing even for Autodesk. Maya not only has a rival called Blender, but also Houdini, Unreal Engine, and others.
Competition is good. Thanks to it, Autodesk had to release its indie licenses. That is a fact.
You need to have artistic knowledge, understanding of composition, modeling, color, lighting, and similar skills. Software are tools with which to apply this knowledge. Today there are certain tools, but tomorrow there will be new ones.
Very true and to add not all companies have the same softwear or work flow... So if you only know one softwear and can't bring it with you or can easly make it work in the company you are very unlikely to get hired by that company.
A lot of studios aren't using the latest build of their main DDC.
They be rocking Maya 2018 because their pipeline is build around it and works. Upgrading to newer versions for a whole studio pipeline seems like a nightmare.
Imagine staying with Blender 2.79 for years. They can't just upgrade when a new version releases.
Well, my school teach Blender, previously couple years ago before pandemic, they teached Maya, but now no longer available anymore. The teacher says the community is only for professional, not really beginner friendly, and also expensive. So they switched to Blender! :D
They get paid money by Autodesk.
They are corrupt.
Not necessarily, Autodesk just has better products for professionals, learning the industry standard apps like Maya is essential for those seeking to work at a major studio and at major projects. Autodesk even offers several perks for students, so they’re not corrupt if they’re doing their job at supporting artists.
@@chanceraphael328 I was a Maya artist too... moved to Blender... I know one thing, the blender will be the future... Autodesk every time repeats one thing... We are industry standards...and updated boolean... this child play will be replaced by Man play with the upcoming blender industry leader. 😅🤣
Maya and max will become like Nokia and Canon
canon is still relevent in cameras but point taken
@@Ablumz not like sony 💀
maya is now blender is future 💀
@@principedelapaz3593 just because sony is biggest right now doesn't mean canon is irrelevant
I studied classic 2D animation at UCLA in 91. I went to 3DS Max in the mid nineties for the gaming industry for a decade. I taught modeling and 3D animation at university for 6 years in the 2000's. Now I use Blender for most of the products I create as a contractor. When hiring new talent I am more concerned with their breath of work in their portfolio over what software they know. If their fundamentals are sound I don't care what package they are good with. Keep grinding on that portfolio to be different from your classmates. If I see another freaking bicycle model I'll cry... a lot.
I am a designer from India and I have gone through this dilemma over a long period. During my design undergrad, I had to learn Maya for 3D Design and I barely passed the subject as the academic department believed in corporate software products over open-source software - I ended up in a verbal argument with my professors. During my design master's, I had the same subject but I worked on Blender. Also, my master's professors preferred using open source software as they were professional creative people, unlike the undergrad where the faculty were dumb MSc graduates who liked to bark rules & process. I felt I learned concepts of 3D faster on Blender. Also I used Maya student license only as the university administration doesn't regard design tools with importance and would be more interested in Microsoft Office.
Blender is open source. Maya is closed source. Nothing about industry standard except Autodesk keeps things in-house.
The focus is on open source software meeting the equivalence of Autodesk, Maxon, Adobe and many other closed source softwares.
Blender is publicly and community funded, while Maya is a market product that costs more to personally own than to work at a school or studio that has owned it for years.
My school says they have a partnership with maya. But another reason they said blender is open soruce that makes it not as safe or some bs idk that just sounded like an excuse
That's why Blender will always be seen as amateur software.
@@NicCrimson That's illogical. Just how non-Linux users swear by Windows, just cuz it's not open source like Linux based systems. Yet, now ppl are seeing how shady and bloatware filled Windows is (always has been). They're injecting malware internationally into ppls pc's just to prevent them from installing or moddying Windows onto unsupported hardware. Then again, even Linux has vulnerabilities to malware and it's trending in 2024. Just check cybersecurity statistics. Blender in itself isn't free. Others have paid (donated) to support the devs income so that it can be free for the rest. That's why it has to be a system based around adding functionalities through add-ons. But don't get it twisted, Blender can defenitely contend against the likes of Maya and others. It's users who need to learn how to make the magic happen, not the software. Ppl are delusional with dreaming of one button magic solutions or Ai plug-in nonsense cuz they have no skills in the use of the software and are to lazy to learn how to do it. Yet, they call themselves professional artists 😂 real professional artist can do things manually and make even more amazing things with addons/ai/etc.
Excuse might be bs but it's the same reason you don't find much viruses on apple vs Microsoft. Give people the code and other people can exploit.
@@headhunterscustoms being open source isn't what makes it less likely to have a virus. Apple machine viruses don't have compatability with Microsoft machine viruses because of the use of BIOS/UEFI (Windows) vs EFI (Mac's) (boot/power up protocols) and NTFS/Fat32/DOS/GPT/MBR vs APFS/Journaled File System (operating system formats). It's different programming/code, so Windows viruses are just incompatible with Mac's. They do have their own set of viruses though, so don't just go clicking on all the trash on the net. Even Linux systems are suseptible to viruses, even though they tend to target servers mainly rather than individual users. Current cybersecurity statistics show its a trending issue, hence all the database leaks you hear about online/news sources that end up selling users personal info for example.
@@HBProductions. no sorry I get what you mean in that regard. I just know that at least in OLDEN days that Apple used to have a revolving code or something to that affect, you had to be given permission to access that and make software for them. I think they did go a little open source lately. And in fairness it's probably not the correct wording. Just same principle in my mind. You have something open source and people can create viruses real easy.
No they dont :D Newer schools teach mostly using Blender
For example 🤔?
My uni teaches only blender, kinda wish they taught maya though cos it’s hard to get a job in the industry armed with just blender
give examples please
And this is why many parents started educating kids from home. Schools are failing. 😂
maya is now blender is future 💀
because maya got popular for over 20 years, while blender just got popular for these past 5 years. so if most teachers are 40+ years old, then they already learned maya for over 20 years
and gen z still 20 years old or something, so most of them learned blender instead
Blender needs to be master of atleast 1 thing... so nobody can ignore
Eventually it'll get good enough at enough things that it'll be un-ignorable
Blender is already much better at modeling than maya. Saying otherwise is just smoking too much weed.
@@nosirve9458It's still quite unintuitive and takes a long time to retopo. Uses crazy amounts of memory instead of GPU for modifier calculations. Not my idea of ideal.
@@fluffsquirrel you have an inside built addon for retopo, and other paid alternatives (one mimics the quad draw and adds more options, for only 3 euros in blendermarket). I used both, and again, I understand the 3ds max and blender debate for modeling. But Maya? maya is nothing compared to these two. and If i add addons to the equation, it's not even close
@@nosirve9458 Huh. Thanks for the information. I guess Blender modelers are lazy then. The output from Blender modelers compared to Maya look like trash.
In 10 years blender will be the first one. That’s the reality. Coz it’s opens source, free, always in development, and have a strong community that is developing too. And that’s how you can create a strong tool for many years.
I remember I started out with Maya and then converted to Blender. Got to love open source and tinkering. Plus Cycles Rendering is awesome combined with Ray Tracing. In a nutshell, some are scared of change.
I think, people just try to learn blender with the same mindset as their old 3d software like max and Maya which they fail eventually and get back to their old workflow saying blender don't have this function without completely exploring the workflow of blender properly with any professional blender artist's course.
I had such problem in the past switching from 3ds max to blender specially because max has more numbers of modifiers but that doesn't mean blender will lack procedural workflow.
You just have to make your own geometry nodes that is not that hard, even most of the geo nodes are available freely.
I think, for old people blender need complete mindset shift to achieve the desired result, rest can be achieved by available addons. The next generation of artist will use blender heavily because they are learning it freely without going to university and the community of blender is very passionate in helping new people. I also love how neatly blender arrange data blocks inside the blend file to easily copy them to another file which was pain using 3ds max.
Anyway, people will realise the power of blender sooner or later which is their luck/fate.
Its mostly to keep the kids from rich families into the branch. With how insanely expensive all those proprietary softwares are.
I know i cant afford all those softwares.
At least this makes some sense. But why do ALL the art schools in America force students to buy Mac and then just use Adobe software? Adobe can run on both PC and Mac. I think this is unfair for consumers, students and creates unnecessary obstacles for artists to switch eco system in the future
With the new release of the Witcher REDkit modding tool, I noticed that a developer at CD Projekt Red is already using Blender for animation as part of their workflow. This raises the question of how many professionals uses Blender specifically for game development.
Most UK colleges and university still teach Maya or 3ds Max. (I have taught at one) where it was teaching students Maya. I believe more colleges and universities should be teaching blender, most of the skills transfer but ultimately, it is accessible as it is free.

Clearly fair, school is opened by industrialist to facilitate their industry with standard workers needed for it. Ask blender foundation what is its purpose at the first time it was built for?
I rather use Blender and do everything I need to do for free than spend hundreds or thousands of dollars a month on Maya or Zbrush that Blender can do for free.
Sure buddy, keep lying to yourself and others.
Same dude, I never leave Blender with my work flow from, concept, to modeling, to texturing, to retopo, to rig, to animation. But I do use addons that are on sale that'll cost me a fraction of what the "Industry" uses.
@@hound_of_justice How am I lying?
@@spittingame4241 3ds Max and Maya have indie licenses which do cost even less than ZBrush which is also affordable for a lot of folks. And sure Blender can animate, model, sculpt like Zbrush can sculpt and Max and Maya can model and animate but if someone prefers efficiency, more advanced and robust toolset that makes the life easier and faster then people have a good reason to use 3ds Max, Maya, Zbrush and some other packages instead of Blender.
My college has both, but they only teach Maya so Blender is just a decoration in the computer
They teach Blender in schools of growing economies, like India. Even though Maya has a foothold in those countries, newer studios are developing Blender pipelines. The 3d artists in India and Africa, especially in Lagos are just as talented as in the white-man ( so-called first world ) countries...maybe even better.
make video for vray in blender👌
💯💯
So it boils down to "we need more Blender focused/interested studios and schools" so that better resources/funding can come Blender's way so that they too can make money beyond mere donations and also be able to negotiate licensing deals to school's/studio's/independant professionals (thereby eliminating the "free" aspect of Blender probably. The question is, are it's users willing to transition over to that business model even if/when the software is that good in 2024 in order to create job demands and customer interest? I personally say yes (I use multiple softwares by choice as a freelancer), but what would others say? Are you willing to buy a license for Blender in order for it to be better supported industry-wise and in academic environments?
As this would completely undercut the Foundation's mantra and mission statement of free and accessible to everyone, no, and you'd have gargantuan push-back from the community if they tried. Personally, I always thought they should've taken the Unreal/Unity route from the beginning, where you're only charged if you make X amount of money a month or year. Even if they wanted to set the bar at 500k or a million a year, that would still have been better than completely free for everyone. But it's too late for any of that now.
@@Arjjacks in all honesty, I'd bet money that not everyone reports true sums they make voluntarily on any software unless it's mandatory like with businesses to avoid legal consecuentes. Also, how many pro's actually net 100k+ that would out themselves to be forced into a license requirement? Many other softwares at some point were free too, but then things changed and either they no longer exist (like many great render engine platforms) or they've become licence based in order to get bigger industry usage and customer base. Blender is not free. They don't make it out of the kindness of their hearts. If a license requirement, even if it's affordable, actually puts you off from using the software, then a few things come into play. 1, you don't really support the product truly if you're not willing to invest, even I tiny bit on it, yet you'd spend tons on countless plug-ins for it. 2. The level of pression al use most have is amateur or hobbiest at best if you can't or are unwilling to pay for a license that would get you more features and improvements on the program that in turn make it more industry competitive on a professional level so that more schools would back it as a career option rather than a hobbiest software. Even Maya has free trials and student/indie licensing to make it accessible for those who aren't inside a major studio. Only difference is they've been around longer the Blender foundation, so they've had more time and money to develop their marketing campaigns and eventually chose to go with a model focused more towards businesses rather than individual users to bank on the money made in volume licensing and not the users who are even willing to use pirated versions just to avoid a licensing fee. And that comes with its own issues all together, then you'll have users who complain when things go wrong and can't get support or are told be user's to figure it out or "get good" if you call yourself s pro in said software. That's just facts, not my personal opinion on the matter. I've been a Maya user for nearly 20 years professionally and I also use Blender now and it's fantastic what each can do in it's own right. I even teach it privately.
@@HBProductions. It's not really that simple, though. They are countless of Blender users who live paycheck to paycheck all around the world and even an 'affordable' license fee, whatever that looks like after exchange rates and interest rates and taxes country-to-country in setting up a global payment processing system, would likely simply bankrupt them. Especially in poorer countries. Again, Blender's whole mission statement is about accessibility to everyone, everywhere. Those who can donate often do, and now you have gigantic companies like Meta, Adobe, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, Apple, and more all contributing 100,000+ Euro a year. So they're not exactly strapped for cash anymore. I just think they could've benefited from the Unreal/Unity model all the way back when they first started 30 years ago, but it'd create too many licensing and logistical problems now and cause an absolute uproar in the community, likely causing much more long term harm than good in the process.
Blender does have its own technical support team in the form of Canonical. They even split the profits 50/50. Blender does have commercial revenue streams, in the form merchandise sales and Studio subscriptions for example, just not from the software itself.
I just reject job offer as teacher. Just coz of outdated software teaching .

anyway... i moved from Maya to Blender... cause... I don't want to Suffer... I want to Enjoy it. I am proud to say...now I have an amazing community that makes heavenly cool plugins and scripts.... for Maya users....just play as you can in this limited time. Blender will be the Future... will be an industry standard.....Save this message...😅🤣
just be good at what you do, a software will not make you better or worse at anything
Because its just better
I use both, maya at work and blender for personal projects. Love to see armatures crying in the comments over a tool 🤣
The reason is simple: The profesionals that are teaching, they learned Maya, 3Ds MAX; etc; Switching to a new software that is entirely different is difficult. It's better to just say "I teach this because it's industry standard". What the industry, teachers, and students don't get, if that people supported more open source blender autodesk prices, and other's, will just decrease in order to compete with blender capabilities for a good price. Why do you think indie licenses appeared ? They didn't exist 5 years ago.
btw blender is already used in big productions, nowadays it's just the decision of the pros to swtich or not, and there are a lot doing it
Im glad they introduced those indie licenses because i pay basically 50€/month for both 3ds Max and Maya instead of 380€/month for the entertainment bundle.
