I just found your channel and am so glad! Not a lot of ornamental gardening channels in California 9B. Do you happen to know your Sunset garden zone or the chill hours you get?
I’m in San Diego county zone 9b/10a, Sunset zone 21, but am from the Midwest originally. I can grow lots of things I would only have dreamed of in Chicago, like gardenias, plumeria, stephanotis, all kinds if citrus, avocados and mangoes, but have to get low chill varieties of peaches, pears, plums etc. We get probably around 300 chill hours here.
But I long for the spring blooming plants I grew up with - peonies, lilacs, tulips…. People say the Itoh hybrids do better here, but the ones I’ve found in nurseries just don’t have the fragrance of herbaceous peonies. I will be very excited to see how well yours do! I have heard of some people growing peonies in LA, so there may be hope for me. Good luck!

Hi thanks for stopping by! I am sunset zone 14 here in Davis. Not sure how many chill hours we get but I know its not enough for the herbaceous peonies. That is why I am going to be a crazy plant lady and pour ice on them next Dec/Jan! Not sure at all if it will work but I figure I will try it! Thanks for commenting!

Every neighborhood needs a crazy plant lady. Congratulations, you're your neighborhoods! But, you're in good company. That wind was bad. One of my jobs today is to clean up all of the leaves that blew off my neighbor's trees. Yep, all of my leaves are from my neighbor who planted all of their trees on our property line so I get most of their leaves because I live on the south side of them and the wind generally comes from the north. Thanks for letting me rant, Janey, I feel much better now. 😁🙄 Those peonies are going to look beautiful.

Good morning 😃 I totally get the crazy wind 💨 we get a lot of that too !! Especially in the spring and living in the country is even more fun with the wind 🤪🤪🤪🤪. It is so interesting to see what you have to go thru just to get a peony to grow !! I am in zone 5 and we just plunk them in the ground and they grow 😂😂😂😂 I love this video as this is what us crazy plant people go thru for our gardens ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️. Have a wonderful day 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Hi there, it feels good to know I’m not the only one out here in California trying to grow Peonies lol.
This year we moved to Southern California but up in the valley, and since we got here our winter has been in the 30’s almost daily and it even snowed/hailed a few days.
It’s now beginning to warm up lol in the 40’s and 50’s (not used to the cold at all ,we moved from Silicon Valley)
Anyway I think my peonies are loving the cold and thaw because their eyes have busted through the soil and one has even begun to grow its leaves!
I wish you all the luscious beautiful peony blooms for your garden. Thank you for sharing with us!

Yeah this is Jane from Pennsylvania I have 30 gardens at memorial Park in New Kensington and I've been doing it for about 18 years and the way I've learned it that the Ito peonies are better for the more south gardeners so if you want to try those they're a little more expensive but they're beautiful they're between the tree peony and the regular peony and a girl kind of looking like a tree peony and they have the flowers like a tree panty but he still cut them back but not all the way to the ground almost but yeah try them they're beautiful okay bye
