I bought this back in April and I think it is a great value homage watch. The case fits fine and I like the drilled lugs. To be honest lack of anti reflection coating have never been an issue for me, not in any watch. I would have liked maybe a little less taper on the bracelet and smaller "adventure" printing. I was a bit worried about the shiny Steinhart logo but it turns out I really like it. Overall I think the design looks good. I will probably never buy an original Explorer but if I'm going for an homage I want it to be of respectable quality and good value. This is the first Explorer homage watch that really made me want it. I think Steinhart offers well made watches with great value for money.

@@brianpercival1829 Yes, I understand how to build a watch from parts. I was also wrong, and the SM w/SW200 is $456, a $130 premium over the ST2130. San Martin is a bit pricey on the upgrade, since I doubt the SW200 cost triple the price of a Sea-Gull ST2130. Considering at least three Swiss-made, 2824 clones are based on the ST2130, I don't see that the SW200 is worth that much more.

I love this Steinhart watch, the Explorer style is exactly what I've been craving for a long time. It gives me an awesome feeling, the movement runs just perfect and I am really looking forward to embrace it's strap variability!

Hi Jody, yeah I know what you mean about the case, it’s definitely a Steinhart thing. I bought one when they first came out and have worn it a fair bit since then also comparing it with my black OP39. You just have to treat the Steinhart as a different animal as far as comfort goes.. it’s not uncomfortable in fact it wears pretty well on my 7.5 inch wrist but it’s never going to have that ergonomic organic feel of the Rollux (I refuse to use the proper name). I bought mine for a daily beater that had some Explorer vibes, had some quality but I could afford to scratch up a little so it works for me. The thing is, I don’t think Steinhart are trying to compete with the Chinese ‘homage’ manufacturers head to head, I think they’re game is to play their own game a little and perhaps they think they are taking the moral high ground on ‘copying’ a bit more. A Steinhart has more cred’ than a San Martin for instance and I think they know that and this is the way they preserve it. Anyway, love your work and really happy to see a review of a watch I own today so thanks.. please keep it going. I guess you’re also looking forward to Obi Wan landing soon.. MTFBWY.

I' ve been owning a Steinhart Ocean 1 Gmt coke for nearly 4 years now and I could not be happier about its perceived quality, looks and accuracy (a steady + 2 sec/day), now this Adventure does not seem to be any different and in a way the fact it has a little too much writing on its dial, the relative chunckiness of both the case and bracelet to me adds to its own personality, on the other hand, the superb lume, the outstanding accuracy provided by the Sellita elabore movement (another plus) makes this a winner in my book, i might pull the trigger on this although right now im in the chase for either a Marathon Gsar medium size or a Rado Captain Cook.

Honestly, I much prefer my Tisell - it's not perfect - the movement isn't of the quality present in the Steinhart for a start, but for half the cost, it both wears and looks better than the Swiss-made piece. If you're going to use the photocopier, use it properly.

Awesome review as always Jody! A really nice Explorer style watch from Steinhart. That Sellita Elabore grade movement is a great engine given the relatively modest price. I paid more than double that for the entry level SW200 in my Oris ProPilot for instance.
The 39mm Explorer is my dream watch and I had it in the back of my mind that I’d try and somehow get one closer to the time to mark my 40th birthday in a few years but now the 39mm has been discontinued that ship has sailed 😔 Not that I could really afford (or rather, justify) spending that kind of money on a single watch and never mind the fact that Rolex would be unlikely to ever sell the likes of me a stainless steel sports model 😂
This Ocean 39 Adventure reminds me a bit of a Tisell Explorer homage I have. It is such a nice watch and looks slightly closer to its inspiration than the Steinhart but when you look closer there are quite a few differences which start to really stick out. The dial, bracelet and clasp are very close to the real deal but the lugs and case shape are slightly different and those differences got more obvious and noticeable the longer I had the watch which felt a bit “uncanny valley” 😂

I have one of the second runs on the way. Just an observation. Emphasis of curvature on the Rolex Oyster case is on top of the lugs. Hmmm. And is also extended...double hmmm. Observing the angles, extension of lugs from top to underneath....to tell you the truth, there is not that much difference. I like my Ocean 39 GMT Classic better than the Rolex GMT Coke I once had. Ceramic bezel, 300m water resistant, excellent bracelet. Face it, the Germans!!!

Jody, you are absolutely spot on about the case shape and how the watch sits on some of our wrists. At the moment I'm wearing a fantastic Heimdallr that is a Seiko diver homage. I believe the case back does not protrude beyond the curved lug ends. This combined with a high quality jubilee bracelet makes the watch extremely comfortable.

While my comparison has to be based on a vastly smaller number of other watches than Jody's, I will say that the Steinhart case wears noticeably different. It's nothing I'd call annoying or uncomfortable, but when you wear even the 39 O1s for a few days and then put on something more contoured, you notice that the Steinhart case calls for a lot more attention on your wrist. For example: Even my CW C63 in 39mm and on its steel bracelet (which *looks* a lot larger on wrist than a Steinhart 39 diver) feels almost like I'm wearing a regular Swatch in direct comparison. What really astounded me was when I put on a buddy's 1990s Submariner which felt like it was made of paper in direct comparison. Sure... that was also down to the much flimsier and lighter bracelet on the Rolex (God, these things were pretty terrible back then), but I would bet it has even more to do with the fact that the Rolex is much more contoured to your wrist than the Steinhart - which more or less just sits on top of it.
And yes: AFAIK all those O1-models use the same basic case with small deviations depending on the model. Some of the more "premium" ones have chamfered lugs for example. But then again: Rolex use the basic Oyster design on a large variety of watches themselves. They aren't shy about the fact and fans of the brand don't seem to mind. I'm guessing the "parts-bin" approach Steinhart use when creating new models is probably one of the reasons why they can manage to offer these things at a relatively low price.
