At age 60, I started SS April 2021 (8 prior months on Pavel's PTTP) and I like the results. This gentleman gives me hope (currently at 195 pounds at 5"9.5", my 5 reps lifts are: Squat 241, Bench 156, Press 110, and Deadlift is 271. A ways to go,..
If you can, the next time you do interviews, please ALWAYS show video of their PRs on their big 4 lifts at the end or something. I would have loved to have seen this 70 year old pull 385lbs and squat who knows what.
First from one Dave to another and old man to another, good on you. I am one year older than you, started lifting 7 years ago. I wish more seniors would get under the bar. Depending on whether your lifts were singles or some number of reps, I'm either a bit ahead or behind you, either way not too shabby. Good luck going forward.
Wow, he is a strong man. I'm a month shy of 67. His story proves the need to maintain a strong and athletic life throughout youth and into old age. I did not do that. I began strength training a couple years before covid and managed to attain a 295 squat. After covid I'm now struggling at 195. I don't have a coach, I don't have people working with me. No worries. I'm safety-conscious and pushing hard. I'll get as strong as I can.
Love these real life stories. Especially when a 70 year old talks about big numbers inspires me. My question to Starting Strength is, when you ask these people about numbers, are you asking what is their one rep max? Or five rep max numbers? Just curious. :)
Very good episode,I'm 61,I would love to see what this fellows twice per week program consists of because I too am on a 2 day per week program, doing the 3x5 method with press and squats one day and bench and deadlift on the other.
Nice. I’m 62 and following the SS basic book and Rips Practical Programming book. 2 days a week. “A”day is squat, bench, dead lift and “B” day is squat, press, deadlift 3x5 for everything except deadlift - it is 1x5.
Very inspirational guy. Appreciate the fact that at 70 he is still working. Not sure what he does but I think it is great that at 70 a man has the drive to get up every day with a purpose. And I say this as a 58 year old guy who has no intention of every retiring. Like Trump said "to retire is to expire". Keep going man!!
donald trump didn't invent that quote, it's originally from fred trump sr., his grandfather. like you didn't specify which trump, but usually when someone just says 'trump' they mean the ex-president, not some other random trump in his family tree
Nice to hear real peoples story’s. One thing I notice some older people who do good weights are “returning” lifters, are these sort of improvements possible for older men/women who have trained with weights and done sports but only recreationally ? I ask as a 65 year old who has “weight trained” for sports but never seriously and am starting out now by following Andy Bakers programmes (Garage Gym Warrior). Thanks and respect to David, very inspirational. 👍🏴.
Great interview. Would have loved to hear specifics on volume. Straight across sets of 5 or maybe 3s? I know he said he’s training Tuesday and Thursday. Is there a weekend day also or just two days a week? These in the trenches interviews are the best.
I'm wondering where David was at on squats and deadlifts after the initial linear progression phase. I'm 64 now and haven't decided whether I want to try any intermediate methods or just stick with "maintenance". I've been doing the main Starting Strength lifts for about four years and worked up to about 315 for 5x3 on squats and 315 for 5 reps on deadlifts before COVID. Since COVID (I haven't had it), and a nagging back injury the last few months, I'm currently doing squats at 245 for 5x3 and deadlifts at 260 for 5 reps. Kind of itching to increase again, but in no hurry till the back feels better again too.
Great to hear about the sleep.. would love to know how much deep (vs REM) he’s getting nightly. Around his age, lucky if i get more than 30m. (Audio note: Was this the noisiest edition of Between Two Plate Trees ever? Aside from putting the lavalier mic right against his neck and scratching the entire interview, we had at least one fire alarm, and one car alarm!) Overall, one of the best SS videos I’ve watched. it covered his evolution in rest times pre- gym prep, post gym recovery ….I feel like I’m not alone working/struggling with those issues. Great work all around guys!
Must be arthritis free. Tough to hit those numbers when you have arthritis in hips knees lower back neck. Have to lift through the pain to strengthen. Has to be done.
Dude looks GREAT for 70.
This is inspirational! At 58, I need to see this kind of interview!
At 70 this guy is as strong as me at 26 on squats and deads.. inspiring.

It's great to see a guy his age push himself.
That's my goal now and when I'm 70 years old and beyond. Be as strong as possible and keep putting up good numbers.

I like that guy. Don't give up keep going
This guy is my age. I've been doing SS for about 6 years now but this guy is very inspiring. (Really nice beard Brent).
I look forward to getting this into our budget

I’m pretty familiar with the program. He definitely is not doing a one rep max. This client is likely doing triples on the deadlift.
@@brakemadness Thank you 😊
I’m 57 and DL 455lb for 3x3 work sets. It can be done.
This gives me so much hope. The dogma before SS was that it's basically impossible to get stronger after 40.
I started after 40 so you can def get stronger after 40. I started deadlifting with a pair of 20lb dumbbells and made it to a 1RM of 375 so far.
Great conversation, better than the title

@@rinkuhero didn"t say anyone "invented" it.

Try some fasting. It really helped my sleep. Was getting up at 4am constantly
Crikey! 70?!
