Lyrics:
[Instrumental Intro]
[Verse 1]
How does it feel
To treat me like you do?
When you've laid your hands upon me
And told me who you are?
I thought I was mistaken
I thought I heard your words
Tell me how do I feel?
Tell me now, how do I feel?
Those who came before me
Lived through their vocations
From the past until completion
They'll turn away no more
And still, I find it so hard
To say what I need to say
But, I'm quite sure that you'll tell me
Just how I should feel today
[Instrumental Break]
[Verse 2]
I see a ship in the harbour
I can and shall obey
But, if it wasn't for your misfortune
I'd be a heavenly person today
And I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard you speak
Tell me, how do I feel?
Tell me now, how should I feel?
Now I stand here waiting
[Verse 3]
I thought I told you to leave me
When I walked down to the beach
Tell me how does it feel
When your heart grows cold
(Grows cold, grows cold, grows cold, grows cold)
[Instrumental Outro]
#NewOrder #BlueMonday #TopofthePops
A rare case on TOTP where a band actually played live. The instruments going out of tune and not syncing makes it both bad and good.
Instruments going out of tune playing live is classic New Order, hehehe
Don't forget the bad vocals
Ok ok, it does not sound very good, I agree. But you (we) are all thinking in the album "canonic" version, 1000000000 listened in our lives. But, lets remember the song was really new, I feel they were a kind of training-testing the song, instruments, keyboards, Bernard´s voice tune, etc. Just listen to the weird (and nice) ending (3:45)
shame the song is shit
I thought the speaker on my PC was buggered!
Footage of my friends and I before getting kicked out of guitar centre.
Haha I love this comment
LOL
That's so Hysterical 🤣🤣🤣 🎸🎸🎸 🔥🔥🔥
Bernard always looked like being on stage singing was the absolute last place in the world he wanted to be. Yet he was there.
He had to because Ian opened the position.
Lol
The og band members love picking bad singers.
He never wanted to, but when Ian went, he was the only one to take the position
@@ianmorton1799 pretty much, and they didn't want to go back to regular jobs~
Actually sounds like a live performance. The mistakes add to the charm.
I think so too!!!
Somehow this Manages to be absolutely dreadful and brilliant the same time
And here's me thinking I was the only one who thought he can't sing for shit.
@@LFOVCF hes a good singer but he has pretty bad stage fright, he always has even in jd
They actually played quite badly on purpose and were quite frankly making fun of the entire situation they found themselves in. Keep in mind that at that time they still thought of themselves as being a punk band (despite all the electronic equipment and dance beats), and all of a sudden they are performing on the most mainstream music program on UK television.
@@bvanloo75 I just assumed they made it a bit different to prove it was live.
@@jamesoloughlin8268 true, but the studio wasn't made for live performances so that's also a reason
It’s surprising that the BBC actually allowed new order to play live when the norm on TOTP was terrible miming
, you really have to admire the band for obviously insisting they would only do a live performance
or not at all. Great band
This
@@Nenko_Musicyooo quake my man. You play the RTX?
It took several attempts by TOTP to get them on. Each time the band said no to miming until TOTP relented to NO playing live….and the results were…..not great.
The band would change their tune about miming in the later years when they were being offered trainloads of money.
i just love when at 2:22 Stephen uses wrong sample and Barney is like "Oh god, kill me now!"
Never noticed this 🤣🤣
Lol, I was listening (and laughing) then that sample drops in .. like, what the heck?!
This is hilarious...he actually does look like he's thinking that 😆
And his little laugh a bit later (3:21), prob at the ridiculousness of it all 😂
Totally! You are very observant! I would never have seen this.. I mean.. it would have taken me several rewatches. Thank you!
I was totally expecting a pre-recorded track for this performance. This was definitely live and very raw! I love it!
Yeah after this performance TOTP decided they didn't want people playing live because it might be a mess
New Order always performed live on TOTP.
The entire base is programmed.
i love it when music sounds shit for no real reason
@@gmansi yet it clearly wasn't.
Love the bit where Steve plays the choir note instead of the explosion sound and clearly swears a few seconds after with Barney hiding the fact he's laughing
Despite the out of tune instruments, the terrible syncing, and the complete lack of charisma….this is still brilliant!
They stayed up all night the night before because they thought it would make them
look rough- and they thought it waa funny!
I wouldn’t say there is a lack of charisma at all as peter hook oozes charisma by the way
Really it was just a super cool doesn’t give a shit attitude from the band and it’s totally obvious they didn’t care one bit
And it was totally deliberate the way they played out of tune in parts
It was really two fingers to the awful conservative BBC
And they enjoyed having a platform to do so. FANTASTIC BAND
What syncing? It’s all sung and played live. Had never been done before by any other band before.
This is from before sequencers existed! They had it invented for them to make this song work I don't think you understand how amazing this is they did this live.
@@t-ladtheband Some of it was programed that 15 seconds none of them are even playing anymore and yet sound is still happening
(2:23) Bernard's "OMG he pushed the wrong note, again" reaction...
The fact that this has barely any dislikes despite being terrible just tells you how much people love New Order.
It doesnt sounds terrible, just a bit out of tune
I don't think they sounded bad at all, actually kinda....fresh.
That is their sound. Lol
Lol. That’s pretty true.
Standard terrible singing from Barney. They should have given the lead vocal job to Hook, at least he can sing in tune.
Bernard is never going to slay us vocally but, aside from the singing, i like this live version quite a bit. the "flaws" make it unique and it still kicks!
bernard makes selena gomez sound good
@@sapitron how? he sounds good, he just can't sing
@@sapitron he sings better than katy perry too
He's a great pop singer, hugely influential.
Peter is hitting those electric toms like, “Oh, bloody hell, this crowd is terrible.” 😂 Once they get going, though, it’s absolutely brilliant. So unique and funky (in its own way).
Huge confidence on this channel for uploading this.
I know! I thought this gig kept them awake at night. Then again it's quite possibly the best sounding car crash in musical history.
So strange hearing a live version. Love it, it's natural and human!
1:58: That moment when you step on a Lego brick you didn't realise was there.
😂
🤣

yo wtf this made my day 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@Skip ads Yep, she's great. Now fuck off and listen to some Wham you nonce.
Did you just come up with that Karl? Because thats not usually what makes a good live show

This is unironically my favourite version of Blue Monday. Brilliant stuff!

Not really. Except health minor problems, it's fun to see how good we had it and how smart & educated we are compared to the following generations. Plus I really don't want to live forever 🤗

We were sooooo lucky. Cheers to the '80's!
They were Joy Division really in this performance, not really new order yet.......... 🕊️
ah yes, the most legendary TOTP performance of all time
probably second to David Bowie's Starman
Seen The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu (KLF) doing 'It's Grim Up North'?... it's hilarious.
Probably second to Nirvana's "Smells like teen spirit"
What does TOTP means?

Song sums up the 80s. Seriously one of the most perfect songs ever composed.
😂 … no it’s not 🤣
@@kayamerrick3907 shut up
@@kayamerrick3907 what is then
Apart from a few gems here and there the 80’s were pretty shit. Pop culture was pure revulsion.
@@ceno8039 you’re stupid and wrong
It's horrible. I love it!
The story behind this performance is just brilliant. Even funnier is the recollection from Peter Hook how delighted the band were when the single dropped further down in the pop charts 😂😂
I wonder if it was self-sabotage as each record sold cost them money. This would help alleviate the financial bleeding.
What's the story?
@@filipe977I think Bernard was on some strong narcotics 😂
Some say this is a myth. Actually they'd have gone up 3 places after this beutiful live blunder... this song is legendary
Tbf, the BBC is culpable for the terrible mix.
Bernie @ 3:07 "how should i feel" and Hooky gives him a stare from hell, LOL.
Haha Hooky looked very bored through this entire performance. Maybe he was sleep deprived and was waiting to go home or something
This isn't "terrible." Solid performance. Good vibes. Bernard Sumner was mostly in tune, not nearly as bad as some are saying
Theres something about it that would evoke people to say this tho, imo it's great
This isn't nearly as bad as most people make it out to be. Yeah, the synth goes out of tune and the sequencers go out of time a bit, but this is a real performance of a song that at other times was very robotic and artificial. The band were having a bit of a laugh, which endears them to me. It cut through the plastic of the miming culture on Top of the Pops, which Nirvana would also eventually do with "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Taking from the words of Sister Bliss (keyboard of faithless), the temperamental analog synthesizers going slightly out of tune gives a distinct character and soul to the music
Bernard Summer is high, very high........... Almost flying........
this is in my top 5 of songs, ive never seen them play, but seeing and hearing this song stripped back to raw, is amazing 40 years old now and timeless
Although New Order are seen as a synthpop band, they took pride in playing live, varying setlists every night and frequently improvising. It's worth checking out live recordings of their songs just to see how varied the performances were. That said, they did originally conceive Blue Monday as an encore that a sequencer could play while the band was drinking in the dressing room. You see a remnant of that idea at the end of the video, when the music changes and everyone stops playing.
@@ThreadBomb I could agree with you more mate, they where before their time, so innovating paved the way for many others
Bernard's off his face ......gad bless 'I'm!
omg bernard is screaming inside, hooky doesn't care, gillian looks worried and stephen is trying not to laugh hahahaha
I love Hooky
None of them have any idea. They can’t hear what’s goin out over the broadcast...only what’s happening onstage. I’m sure they weren’t happy when they found out later...
@@manifestgtr Of course they heard it, they are all laughing except Hooky :-) (as usual)
Hooky’s just in his own world and vibing solo with his bass 🚬😎
Bernard was trying his hardest not to corpse. Hooky's smile at the very end said it all.
- How many synthesizers do we need?
- Yes!
Considering there was very little RAM to store custom patches, you needed that many to actually have enough instrument sounds for the song
3:24 hear Bernard Sumner laugh while singing 😂
Just curious why you posted the time stamp AFTER the point where he laughs. It’s at 3:22
In Steve's latest book, Fast Forward, he admits that he stuck in the wrong floppy discs at the wrong time. At 2:21 the chorus plays instead of the thunder.
He actually laughs after doing it realizing the error. Lot's of examples of New Order errors in those early days of unreliable instruments.
@Saint Back Track It's an E-mu systems Emulator II. I dont believe the EPS was released yet when they recorded Blue Monday.
That's funny shit. You can see Bernard and Gill's reaction when the thunderous sound was supposed to trigger but they just got the choir. lol
@@jamesortiz6312 it's the first Emulator, not the Emulator II
He is laughing his ass off
Y'all know, Barney, Hooky and Steven would have loved this back in the Joy Division days, the chaos the authenticity
It's 2020 and I still love this song!!! The 80's rocked 🎵
Myself and the entire team (New Order) appreciate you for your kind words, please keep support our music thanks 💕💕😘
2022 November here. Must watched the Hacienda documentary so i had to go back and watch this again...love it.
That bass is still screaming Joy Division
Bass screams of a sped up version of the Ennio Morricone bassline from A Few Dollars More
At least they're not lip syncing
1:04 the raised eyebrow says so much, I know that feeling
This is a very rare, dark, underground and more post punkie version of this classic song...
Perfect imperfections, so original, so true, the frailty and melancholy of JD shines through yet there's an uplifting and positive attitude pointing towards the future. So life like
almost 40 years old.. I can't imagine how mind blowing this song was back then. it's still fucking amazing as fuck. love it so much.
It was mind blowing. 12 inch version especially so. Fighter jet overhead. Music turned a page that day.
Yep. Definitely an ’I Feel Love’ moment
Here in Brazil, in the 1980s, New Order was one of the most successful international bands, practically, all the teenagers of this generation loved it and had at least one New Order album, especially the incredible album Substânce 1987. And today with "49" years old (I had misspelled my age, in fact I recently turned 49 years old rs), I still enjoy listening to the beautiful. electronic music of New Order, my favorite band.
I would love to go to Brazil and see a concert. I hear it will be legendary.
@@Moondoggy1941
I didn't know that New Order would do a show here in Brazil this year, if they come I will try to go to their show ...; Here in Brazil, in the 80/90s we had excellent pop-rock bands, but nowadays, these bands practically no longer exist, one of them is this band here: th-cam.com/video/WRtOMlKOZps/w-d-xo.html, but we had it here other great pop-rock bands, but electronic music bands we never had one that was successful.
I am 60 so I was lucky to live and love the 80's music, Every week another great song came out from a different band.
@@Moondoggy1941
True, the 80's were incredible (today I'm 49, I was a teenager at that time lol), great bands and incredible music, I really enjoyed: The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, Duran Duran, Queen, A-Ha, Depeche Mode , Pet Shop Boys, Information Society and many, many other bands and singers that if you write here would make a great list, not to mention Brazilian bands and musicians, by the way, they removed the link for the Brazilian band that I left for you to hear, you got to listen??? Liked??? Listen to the songs of this other Brazilian band here that was very successful in the 80's too, I hope they don't remove it and that you like it ...
I had left a link with another Brazilian band that was very successful here in Brazil in the 80s, but again they removed it, that group is so slutty, because it is not competing with English music, then I will make a list with the best bands, singers and songs on my channel, then if you want, go there and watch, combined English friend ???
New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, and many English bands from the early 80's fulfilled a musical gap that didn't exist in Brazil and many other countries. The Brazilian song from the early 80's was a typical soft rock, boring and not interesting to dance.
The synthesizer melody is out of sync with the rhythm, it was programmed in manually, each note had to be input which was done by Gillian, she missed a single note out of the programming and this threw the whole melody out. Few people know that Hooky's bass line is copied from the film A Few Dollars More!!! The drum line is from Donna Summers Our Love and the monk choir sound is sampled from Krafwerks Uranium!
You know what they say: good artists copy, great artists steal.
I mean it was influenced by few dollars more but it’s pretty different especially with the chorus and being 6 string bass he took that base and ran with it
How does it feel.....
Yeah. How is this performance so awful and great at the same time? hmmmm
Punk
Playing live, singing live, like it should be. 😎👍
Why do people think this is bad? Honestly I think it's pretty good considering what they were doing!
2:24 Bernard’s face when he heard that synth gone out of tune
I think it's actually because instead of the explosion, Steve has loaded the wrong sound and you get the "Ahhhhhh" instead. He mentions it in his book 👍🏻
check out 3:07 when Hook looks on Bernard's face like : "Does Bernard tuned enough?"
