Its a Dutch classic and pretty much everyone here knows this sketch.
We have several amazing cabaretiers (stand up comedians) and I highly recommended looking them up.

This sketch is funnier when you have assembled some IKEA furniture and therefore know exactly what he is talking about 😂
    BTW: carton = cardboard

IKEA is of Swedish origin, (since 1943) with its headquarters in the Netherlands and branches all over the world. The company focuses on offering furniture and home items that usually have to be assembled by the buyer himself.

Deciphering the wordless instruction leaflet of an IKEA bed is a science on its own.

Charlie there is one thing you need to understand about Dutch language.
We basicly two ways to addres someone.
We have 'JIJ' equivalent to German 'Du' and French 'Tu' which is tho non formal way between friends
'JIJ' always goes among first name bases.
and we have 'U' (no English pronanciation, certainly not like You but more like U-topia).
'U' is the formal way to address someone. Like in official communication between businesses, companies, between people you hardly know, kids to grown-ups and such/
'U' goes on last name base like Mr Lastname
There is one odd exception, that is when hierarchie of power is involveld
You boss might address you with 'Jij' and 'Lastname' and you will respond with 'yes Mr Lastname' and use 'U'
This thankgod has mostly disapeared since the 90's
These day's it's more and more the tendency to use the non formal 'jij' (you) which is just a verry anoying marketing way to make you feel at home. (Well i never feel at home at places where i have to pull my wallet)
This is basicly why Youp repeats on saying JIJ ('you', among friends)
IKEA screws generaly are self drilling hardboard screws and need an alankey alike tool of non standard size though included tool to drive.
This whole rant is about the fact that living around the canals in Amsterdam is pretty expensive, so for the happy few,
and keeping up apearance for the neughbours.

Hey Charlie, thanks for reacting on this particular video.
You've mentioned that you had to read fast. I was the one who translated this sketch from Youp, and this was a true challenge for me as Youp speaks very fast, and uses basically untranslatable Dutch slang and cuss words. This sketch is very well known, and basically one of the most famous bits of conference/cabaret here in NL. Americans might think this is stand-up comedy, but should not be considered as such. If you enjoyed this particular video, may I recommend this video as well? th-cam.com/video/DkFHotWP6og/w-d-xo.html If you decide to watch it and/or react upon it, be sure to read the description of the video.

Youp van 't Hek is a classic Dutch stand-up comedian.
If you want to explore how dark and offensive we like our stand-up comedians, check out the older works of Hans Teeuwen or Theo Maassen.
And no, they never got cancelled and had successful careers.

Hello Charlie, I'm French and I saw in one of your videos that you had Basque blood! The Basque country is wonderful with
    - both the sea and the mountains and very beautiful landscapes! A unique culture and traditions
    - a unique architecture with houses with a white façade, shutters and balconies made of red wood,
    - a single language that is not of Indo-European origin like other European languages and that has been preserved despite the Roman invasion. The Basques were friends of the Romans and the Romans did not force them to speak Latin
    - a tradition of singing with very beautiful men's choirs
    - traditional sports such as Basque pelota and Basque games, which are games of strength. In France, we say "strong as a Basque"
    - its gastronomy with, among others, Bayonne ham and Espelette pepper
    - its festivals such as the Bayonne festivals.
The beret originates from the Basque country. It was worn by shepherds to protect themselves from the sun, rain, etc.
I am talking about the French Basque country because I am from the north of France and I have never been to the Spanish Basque country
If you do a search on "le pays basque", you should find beautiful documentaries.

Hoi! Have a great 2025! All the best from the Hague! Whereas most people have to many screws, I always miss one screw with Ikea stuff. P.s. I worked a lot with Youp as a theatertechnician back in the early 2000’s. Great comedian.

I'd also recommend Herman Finkers, another great Dutch comedian. This one (De buren) is great and has English subtitles: th-cam.com/video/N-gubub4cXA/w-d-xo.html
And another great one (personally my favourite comedian) is Javier Guzman. He also has some videos with English subtitles: th-cam.com/video/wmKgoHO1vFI/w-d-xo.html

These swedish screws are the standard Hexagon socket screws. Maybe he is from the 17th century and only knows Philips screws.

They weren't really common in the Netherlands before IKEA. But this video is at least 25 years old.

Uhm, no. These are not really standard screws that you can find at a random hardware store. But yes they are hexagon socket screws and because this is still not considered common IKEA still ships them with this little hex key that doesn't allow setting sufficient torque to the screws, though fairly recently this now also includes a plastic extension tööl.

Ah yes, Youp used to be somewhat funny at some time. He turned all woke in the most pessimistic way possible making even Greta better company to hang around with. The stipulated "jij" (you in italic script in the subtitles) is somewhat more common today as people tend to communicate on a first name base by default, but when this was filmed it would often prompt a response like "I'm sorry, did we attend school together?". The proper way to address people you don't know or owe respect to is by using "U", a fairly sharp sound phonetically described as "ü".

It's better to buy something decent from a second hand shop, than to buy a low quality Ikea nightmare.
