Very cool! Great video! I'm actually a guitar player, but a trombonist friend sent me your video so I could help him get tones with pedals. I liked it so much that I subscribed to your channel! Keep up this great work! Best regards from Sao Paulo Brazil 👏👏👏

Great video. I remember hearing FX pedals on trombone the first time. I got a copy of Raul De Souza‘a Don’t Ask My Neighbors album. If you aren’t familiar with it, it’s a bit dated but fun to listen to.

So 1970's. It feels like a George Benson album, just with trombone.

Hello Shawn, thanks a lot for all your videos, helps a lot! I am currently searching for a multi FX pedal and the tips you share are very useful. I was wondering, I use a tenor trombone but also a bass trombone. Do you think that the line 6 fire hawk would also be relevant for the bass trombone? I guess it would need different settings at least... And also, depending on the need I use a dynamic mic (classic SM57 for now) or a static mic (Shure Beta 98), so I guess for the static mic a pre-amp would be needed? Thanks a lot!

I'm confident that the firehawk would work well on bass trombone as well. Most multi effect processors would likely work well on both instruments.
You are correct that the setting would vary somewhat between the 2 horns. In my experience, it really would mostly depend on what types of sounds you are trying to create. Whatever model you end up going with, be prepared to spend some time with the pedal board in order to learn how to get the sounds you are looking for. There is defiantly a learning curve on this stuff, but it can really be worth it once you get it sorted out.
You are also correct about needing some sort of preamp for your beta 98. I know some horn players use the radial voco loco to provide phantom power for condenser mics and to change the impedance to guitar.

Hello Shawn. Just discovered your channel. Thanks for all your videos! It's just great! I have a question: Can you give us your set up with effects pedals (pre-amp? witch pedals? etc). I got the micro Qtron and it's not very conclusive... Thanks a lot

I use a Sennheiser 421 dynamic microphone through an impedance changer(goes from an xlr input to a 1/4 output) into a line 6 fire hawk fx multi effects pedal. Since I am using a dynamic mic, I don't use a pre amp, but I know some players who use the voco-loco pre amp pedal and seem to like it. Since I am using a multi effects pedal, that is the only piece of hardware I am have in my effects chain. All the different pedals are digital emulations of real world pedals. On other envelop filters like the q-tron that I have tried over the years, I tend to like the "Q" knob to be pretty high. The other settings you will have to fiddle with to find the sound that you are a looking for. I haven't use that specific pedal so I'm not sure what will give you the best results.

Very Informative video Shawn! My son is in high school and I was thinking of getting him Yamaha electric mute. Do you have any suggestions on which pedal board would be a good starter board that includes all the effects you mentioned in this video?

Hey Aresh, The one I started with a long time ago was a digitech rp 355. That model is not in production anymore; however, you can find it used for relatively cheap online. You could also try something like the line 6 M5 stomp box modeler. It is a more compact pedal but would likely be a good place to start for a younger player wanting to get into this side of music making. I have not played on that one personally, but from what I see online it could be a good option. I'm using a line 6 pedal board in this video, and I would imagine the actually circuitry and software is similar.
Keep in mind that whatever route you go, the presets that are included on the pedal may not sound great on trombone since they are made to be used with a guitar. It is does take some experimentation, some know how, and practice to dial the sounds in on a brass instrument.
In addition, if your son is going to use it with silent brass you will need a cable adapter that goes from a male 1/8 headphone jack to a 1/4 TRS input.
I hope that helps. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

@@ShawnBellMusic Hi Shawn. Thanks for the quick response. I'll look into the ones you've suggested. You've got so much helpful material on your channel . I've subscribed even though I don't play the trombone :) Will share your channel with my son. I'm sure he will learn alot. Thanks again!
