  • The Canoe knife pattern is an equal end-style frame with distinctive bolsters at both ends. The name comes from the fact that both bolsters curve up to give the handle the outline of a canoe. The standard version of a Canoe knife comes with a large spear blade and a small pen blade.
    The documentary movie is part of the collection: University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology Films. The full-length film can be found here:

    The Native Americans were truly an amazing people. I really like how these reviews are more than just your typical knife specifications. You're also giving me just a bit of the Case itch with all these perfectly finished knives you keep reviewing. Thanks for another great video.

    @Schmidt54 Good question. I'm not decided yet. Sometimes I think they are too beautiful to be used as EDC knives. But on the other hand, I edc other knives that are more expensive than these Case knives and where I don't care if they look worn or get scratches.

    I am a big fan of CV that Case uses for some of their knives. I have a small folding hunter in CV and it has only gathered a small amount of rust. Thanks for another wonderful video. Keep up the great work.

    Another great video before bed time. Thanks Stefan great job. I actually use Flits metal type polish on my Case 6254CV(full trapper, carbon blade, red bone). I cary this case practically every day :-) Blades are patina-ed and dotted, however I connect with them. If I have to explain it you wouldn't understand. I have one canoe from germany, it has a great nail pull, acrylic pearl, and is beautiful. To the people giving you a hard time about american slip joints-"Why cant we all just get along"

    Stefan, I have seen videos of the making of birch bark canoes and have seen many canoes (maybe a hundred ?) in the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and they go back much further in history than a few hundred years...maybe thousands of years. The big difference today is that the availability of flawless large pieces of birch bark are almost impossible to find. So a modern (last hundred years or so) canoe will have many patches & repairs to make the birch bark waterproof, whereas the canoe in your video, though obviously made in the 1900's is almost perfect and represents a quality seldom found today...as those great birch forests are no more and the pickings for a "perfect" skin is almost impossible. A true learning experience...thank you.

    Hi Stefan. Just wanted to say that thanks to this vid I have just received my first (but hopefully not last) Case Canoe. After your vids got me interested in Case knives I found myself most attracted to this model. I got a Clover Green bone handle with sawcut jigging. As beautiful as they are in your vid they are so much more so in the hand. Wonderful old world style and craftsmanship. I love it!

    (see my other comment) I plan on buying a couple more Trappers in different colors of bone, several Texas Toothpicks, and of course, a few Canoes to round out my collection. It's been proven that folding pocket knives are extremely difficult to master the art of production for fit, and functionality. But us fanciers already know about this fine art! And no 2 are alike. Folks if you want to give that special gift, a Case knife is truly a very personal item w/sentimental value to last a lifetime.

    I love your knife reviews & the entries of the old books, literature & motion pictures are really a nice touch too. "Getting back to our roots and simpler times". I'm 51 & had my first standard sized Case Trapper at 10 years old. My father had taught me very well on honing techniques with a Case Washita oil stone. I got so good at it, he had ME sharpen not only his personal Case, but all the knives in the house. My beloved knife was stolen years ago. I finally bought a smooth Chestnut SS Trapper

    If you are interested in more info on Algonquin canoe building, Ray Mears did an whole show on building one with an Algonquin native on his show "bushcraft". I believe it was the first episode of the second season, its probably available on one of the torrent sites. I found it pretty interesting.
    Thanks for another great video.

    Thanks for the wonderful videos, Stefan. You inspired me to research GEC and Case knives. This week I purchased a large Stockman, and a Seahorse Whittler in buffalo horn for myself, and a Copperlock for my son. Christmas will bring a Case knife for both my son and father (he's my son's best buddy :). I am thrilled with the purchases and very proud of the craftsmanship that goes into each of these knives because they were made in the USA, as was I! Thanks again for the information, education and inspiration!

    I absolutely loved this review. In fact, I've loved all of your Case reviews. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've learned more about the rich history of my country's traditional knife styles from you than I have on my own, and I've owned knives for 28 of my 34 years on earth as an American. I hope you do many more reviews of traditional knife patterns. (May I suggest the Copperhead, a model which is not in current production.) And I agree with you taste in handle color and wish I had a red one.

    As you alluded to when reading the passage about "light canoes", those northern canoes are notable less for their seaworthiness than for their weight. In a region infested with beavers, the ability to make a canoe that is easily portaged is more important than other considerations. In modern times, beavers are proliferating because of radical reductions in the incidence of fur-trapping, so light canoes are again becoming popular.

    Amber Bone is my default handle for Case Knives so of course after seeing this video I had to order the Canoe with the Indian etched blade before woke culture forces Case to remove it I’m sure Case doesn’t desire to denigrate the Native American in any way with it but rather to honor them as you did with your fine video I too own another Canoe the Transition model in Olive Green Bone with XX bolsters I truly enjoy your work

  • @Schmidt54
    @Schmidt54 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @stschmalhaus yes, I can see that issue. The knives really look so nice, I doubt I would edc them on a regular basis. On the other hand, they have a classic and non-tactical look to them, I think carrying them would be a nice change.

  • @Warrosquyoake
    @Warrosquyoake 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just watched this video again, and it's still the finest knife review on TH-cam. What do your fans need to do to get you to review some more Case knives? (GEC reviews are also desired.) I think the doctor's knife, the Tony Bose-inspired cotton sampler, and the melon tester might suit your review style the best. (I'm also interested in seeing your take on the recently re-released copperlock and the Case-Knives-specific Russlock.)

    thank you for these wonderful videos, I'm a fan. I'm also very fond of Case knifes (I live with in 100 miles of Bradford PA and have been to their museum several times ;) ) so I found your Case knife videos even more interesting.
    One question though, other than length, what would you say is the difference between the Case Canoe and Butterbean knifes? I own a Canoe but haven't seen the Butterbean in person (guess I'll have to check it out next time we're in Bradford). I saw a picture of a Butterbean knife and thought it was a Canoe, so to me they are identical.

    @Warrosquyoake Thank you! - At the moment the EUR to USD exchange rate keeps me from ordering knives in the US. - I would love to review a Case Russlock G-10 and compare it to a modern "tactical" knife. The Case Hobo would offer the opportunity to revisit the American hobo culture (Jack Kerouac, etc.). Also, a GEC Northfield Whaler would be a great knife for a review with a side trip to Herman Melville's "Moby Dick". - I guess I need to find a knife sponsor in the US. LOL

    At least half of the joy of owning knives is to care for them, and sharpening. A little effort and time is all one needs. It's an endangered skill. Stainless might be considered a compromise unless around saltwater. Carbon steel is not for the throw away society types. Knives should be more than about just jewelry. Just an opinion.

  • @zeltarstormrun
    @zeltarstormrun 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you 100% on the youth book, thats like an adriged audio book. It's just wrong, give me the hole book please the way the author intended it. Have you ever heard of the Easton Press they make beautiful leather bound books. Not necessarily cheap books but beautiful books none the less. A book shelf of Easton Press books would be the envy of eveyone. Oh you know if you keep up videos like this, your going to give the History Channel a run for their money.
