I work at a thrift store. Most things that come in are trash. Very few items are really worth anything. But the store is always full every day. We make over $15,000 a day from stuff people just give to us. That's pure profit. It's insane that people actually buy this shit.
Joseph Smith Sometimes it's not about making a profit, for the customer at your store. Sometimes it's about finding something nostalgic from their childhood, or finding something 60 to 100 years old that still works and is an interesting peice, or getting something for yourself that is brand new/almost brand new for a fraction of the cost. Sure there is alot of trash out there, and I won't say alot of consumers are smart. But hey, there can be alot of neat stuff out there.
I used Goodwill, Salvation Army, DAV Thrift Store, etc. when I was first married. Also, after my first wife raped me of everything. It's a great place to find stuff like dishes, silverware, pots and pans and furniture to outfit an apartment cheaply.
i know people who find authentic vintage clothes and sell them for hundreds more just for ONE shirt, or ONE jacket, some make livings off it

i work at goodwill, and we scan the books before we put them out for sale. All the good books get sent away and sold online on an auction website. good luck trying to make any money at goodwill, all the good shit is taken away before it ever hits the floor. also the stuff gets put out all day every day not just at the beginning of the week

every district is different. my store doesn't scan books and we don't have an auction site. the workers aren't allowed to buy anything unless it hits the floor for customers first.

A little tip for you on tape decks. They may come on. But I have found that many times when you play a cassette, the sound could be garbled or dragging. What causes garbling is easy to fix, usually you just adjust the audio head which in most cases you can do with an electronic screw driver which insert into holes (provided) by the maker. However, if your sound is dragging, you have just paid out money you'll never get back! Because dragging is caused by three things and none can be fixed. First, lightning could over power the sensitive components on the servo board. That meaning, the resistors, capacitor or power supply line. Second, those machines are often belt driven which is a small grooved rubber band that stretches after intense play or from heat and cold. Third and this being the most frequent (especially on Karaoke players) the sound drags because one motor or both for tape decks is going out or is not getting enough of the original power it was designed for. VHS Tape decks have similar symptoms. This is not a bad idea of going to Goodwill or thrift stores but buying electronics is a risky investment. Just good advice! One last detail to mention, I have re-sold things in person. But if you do with electronics, be certain you can trust them before you ship.

An additional thought: you're going to need somewhere to store all this stuff unless you want your home to soon become overrun with items and a candidate for filming for "Hoarders". If you need to rent storage for a goodly amount of merchandise, that is another cost that needs to be considered if you become truly serious doing this sort of thing. (And there will be other costs to consider for sure, if you want to really approach this in the way a true business model dictates: cost of gas to go to these thrift stores, wear and tear on your vehicle, internet access service fees; small, overlooked items that seem inconsequential but are really important in the real cost of running this or any other business, no matter how small). Just keep it all in mind and in perspective.

+david thompson USPS is OK if it's under 15oz. anything heavier FedEx is better.
I used to deliver for USPS, and they're your cheapest option for pretty much anything under 70 lbs. However, shape matters, so if you're not shipping in a traditional box, you might find cheaper pricing at UPS or FedEx. You can also schedule free pickup at your home or office with Click-N-Ship. I hated getting random pickup requests because it threw off my flow & schedule, but I got to know my regular CNS customers pretty well.
Fed EX SUCKS I use UPS. Fed Ex lost packages more than once and they leave it without knocking on the door. I live in a good area so it shouldn't be a problem but i have had a package stolen.

Speaking from experience here… The hidden costs that he doesn't talk about are: the time spent looking up prices, describing the item correctly, cleaning, repairing if necessary, taking pictures, waiting for item to sell, storing inventory, keeping tabs on hundreds of items, answering potential buyers questions, packaging, shipping, ect. Time is money, people, and if you're not finding desirable, big ticket items that aren't ready for immediate resale, you're wasting your time.

$100 an hour after the things you mentioned is ridiculous , picking is only half the time you use at the mostly likely closer to a 1/3 if your picking correctly. Speaking from a different experience here I can also tell you it is not a waste of time as I've made net profit (not gross sales) over $60,000 a year for 3 consecutive years now doing this and I work maybe 30-35 hours a week on average. As a high school drop out I could never make more then half of this at another job so I assure it is not a waste of time.

So, if you notice, he ran the total of $100 as "Gross Profit" - that's pre-fees, pre-shipping, etc. Between eBay's 10% and PayPal's 7% Fees that's $17 right there that he didn't make. Also, but this is 1 Hour of Shopping. I wonder how long he spent cleaning, taking pictures, doing research, creating the listing, and then how long he had to wait for it to sell. Quite frankly, I avoid the smaller profit items that I know the shipping costs would be high for, such as, the first item in the beginning - the Wireless Air Gaming Device that he said is worth $12-$20 (idk if that included Free Shipping or not), but that shipping cost would be in a 14x12x4 Inch Box - which limits you to, either, USPS Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box ($12.40 ship cost) or USPS Priority Mail Regional with your own box ($8.15-$18, depending on region and box cost), or, if lucky enough, you could have a FedEx Office nearby to use FedEx SmartPost for cheaper.
Paypal's fees are 3%.

These kind of videos will be gone in a year. I've been to a number of Goodwill stores, a LOT of times. There's almost never anything worth the gas it takes to get there, and when it is, they have it priced 5X what this video shows. The money to be made at GW stores around here are measured in quarters, not dollars. And electronics is limited to a cassett player, a busted VCR, and a bunch of clock radios.
Someone said that all the "good stuff" never makes it to the shelves. It is put aside by the Goodwill employees to keep for themselves or friends. What do you think?
That's precisely what happened when I donated a bunch of stuff to Salvation Army. Before I could get out the door, the employees were fighting over who would get what.

I'd be willing to bet 80% of all donations are from people de-clutterinfg their dead relatives' stuff. The reality is, all our stuff is going to either the thrift store or the dump.
I think this is a fine video and it supplies a good deal of information. However, the one element so many people doing this sort of stuff always seem to forget is their TIME. Time is money; don't people give their time any value??? Example: this gentleman just spent $29 (ok, let's round it off to $30) on a group of items he says he will more than likely sell for $100. He just spent an hour in the Goodwill; let's say his time is worth at least $10 an hour, not an exorbitant amount. So, we're up to $40 invested. Next, it will take him at least one hour to list all those items on Ebay--another $10 for $50. Assuming he sells everything, he will then have to package them all, drive to the shipping location (post office, UPS, etc., unless he gets them picked up at home) which will entail probably another hour, possibly two--minimum of another $10 (or even $20). So, we have him investing approximately $60 to make $100 with no guarantee that he will actually make $100. This is not a great business model unless you can easily afford the investment in time and energy and are not really needing any substantial income. Hobby fun this may be, serious business, uh, I don't think so.

Ani S No, I allotted an hour to list everything and then an hour or two to package and ship all those items (if and when they sell); that may probably be a conservative estimate. The point is that Ebay is a good way to make money, but it is not as easy as many people are led to believe and requires a good deal of organization and selling savvy.
+Christina link This session was a rather ordinary one, but sometimes you make a really big score, say an item worth hundreds. Also on the selling end, at times people overpay for things. Plus the 70.00 increase in working capital allows you to "climb the ladder". Today you are dealing GW junk but tomorrow collector automobiles. And lastly, each picking session adds to your knowledge of what is out there. Beats a boring office job any day.

Personally I don't count my time or at most I count my time as $5 an hour.
The reason for that is I'm actually disabled with chronic pain. So it takes me longer to do things. Plus this would be/is a source of earning just a little extra to help pay for things. Usually medical stuff. Or for the occasional fun thing. I also do crafts and I sold a pair of fairy garden storage jars I made from Dollar Tree stuff.
If I actually counted my time I'd be shooting myself in the foot since I take so long. But since I'd probably be doing it anyway I don't count the time and about tripled my money.
I'm trying to get into some buying and selling of either crafts or things I've been lucky enough to find to sell. I'm hoping I can make at least enough to help pay for my badly needed over dentures. Unfortunately I can't wear regular denture due to overgrown bone causing severe pain.
That's my hopeful goal. But I also just want and need to get out more often. If I stay too long in bed I hurt more and if I do too much I hurt more. But I'm finally trying to get out more and be healthier this year. So far I'm doing ok at it. Since being put on 2.5 mg of Prednisone I'm a lot better in general.
So I want to push myself to try and get out more and one way of doing that is to go thrift store/clearance/fleamarket shopping.
So far I haven't really sold anything. Well besides those jars. But I did get 2 men's construction/hiking boots by bearpaw. They are an $60-80 shoe that I got for 89¢. Of course they're not perfect. But other than a few little paint stains they're in great condition.
I'm really hoping I can sell them for $15-25.
The inserts do come out and that makes it great for orthotics. Just wish they fit me.
They were so cheap I figured I try to sell them for a while and if I still have them in 6 or so months I can just donate them. Men's stuff rarely gets donated unfortunately.
So while it is possible to make a living at this, although extremely hard, most of us are more in it to supplement our income. Not that I've succeeded yet.
I personally wouldn't rely on the money from it until after I sold it.
Plus the adrenaline and excitement you get from finding a truly great deal helps with pain control.

Nathan Jennings I understand what he is saying. but he's not selling those goods in an hour. so how is he making $100 an hour.
He's predicting that much income from the hour of time he spent. Close enough for me to figure. He might sit on it a month or two or longer, but if it sells for his predicted amount I'd say he's doing well. An hour is an hour, and 100 bucks is 100 bucks. Just because it sat there for a month doesn't mean it took more than an hour to find and estimate a price on it.
Don't forget the time it takes to list that stuff, talk to customers, ship items, meet people. If you've ever sold stuff on Craigslist, you know the time consuming part isn't shopping at the Goodwill.

While I like these videos, they and the internet itself are exactly why there are so many pickers. You surely can't be surprised that thrift stores are 40-80% resellers now and that those same stores are jacking prices up. That's business.. that's how it works. Thousands of people watch these TH-cam videos on picking full time, of course everyone would like to not have to go to a 9-5 job, so they are going to mimic what they see... which will water down the marketplace and make selling less profitable for everyone. I've been selling stuff just part time on Ebay, Craigslist and Amazon since about 2001 or 2002. I've sold everything from a single cd to a travel trailer online and have noticed a HUGE upswing in online sellers. More sellers = more competition = race to the bottom or longer tail sales and harder to find merch.
Of course, it is easy to flip products, so the more information people have easily, the more they will enter the market and become your competition. I think the reselling/flipping market online is going to be completely watered down to the point that, while you will surely be able to make some sort of a profit, there will be so much competition that doing this full time will be extremely less profitable in the next few years. If you are using these vids as affiliate marketing or are using it to re-direct to your own site to charge people for info, I get it. Gotta hustle! That's what the game is about... but from a purely reselling perspective without those two ideas in mind, all of this abundant information has tanked the reselling market and it will continue to get watered down. Sad. It was easy to make a buck even 3-5 years ago, now it is becoming harder and harder. These videos, while very informative are one of the main reasons for this trend.
I think that if something is easy and profitable people are going to find out about it. I would hypothesize that nothing has changed since you started in 2001. Except yes there are more flippers but there are also more online buyers. I would guess you are just getting old and struggle to compete with young tech people. Like this guy scanning everything with his phone.

Goodwill often sells broken electronics. Do take that into consideration. They only offer store credit for broken items. Especially Blue Ray players hard to test them.
You might make some profit if you did a furniture restoration or revamp of an old piece of furniture but that's really about it. I wouldn't waist my time.

Your Goodwill prices are amazing. That Homedics massager would easily be $14.99 to $19.99 at my locals ones. The Pioneer cassette would be at least $29.99. Plus mine NEVER have sales. I rarely even go in them anymore.
I used to pick vintage furniture and classic video games about 15 years ago. Goodwill has nothing of value inside the store that isn't already priced beyond what it's worth. They have smartphones too! However, their lot auctions do have some good stuff if you know what you're looking for and you're willing to wade through a lot of crap. I bought a lot for $30 there once, threw 75% of it away in their dumpster, sold half of what was left to some other guy there for $150,and sold the other half of it on eBay for $250. Even still, that's a highly unusual day. Most days you go to 4-5 places and find a couple things you'll make 5-10 bucks on if you're lucky. Like he points out, too many people do this. You get the thrill of the treasure hunt, but there's no money in it.

That is the nicest most well stocked Goodwill store I have ever seen. It's also got the cheapest prices I've ever seen in a Goodwill. The Goodwills in Texas and Georgia that I have been into have all been total garbage by comparison.

Hello to you and the others that replied! In all fairness, you guys should check out this guy's (Craigslist Hunter's) other videos. He is truly a GOLDMINE of information- if you're into reselling on Ebay. He's got a ton of experience with unusual items and he's a walking encyclopedia of what things are worth. One of his best training videos shows you exactly what to auction, and how to get top dollar via Ebay's auction platform.. (in several videos he teaches auctioning techniques). Trust me, watch a few and you'll be glad you did. His videos will save you a lot of time. The more I watch him, the more amazed I am about the extent of his knowledge - very grateful to have found his channel.
He "spent" an hour at a Goodwill to illustrate the 'competition' and likely net minus $100.00, and eventually exceed that amount in AdSense revenues, whilst 'picking' up a few dozen new 'subs' on YT, per video. (200+ in the last 48 hrs., for example.) He also grossed $55k. in sales in June and July, 2016 in eBay sales alone... and I would imagine LAUGHS at all the IGNO-RANT 'comments' here? (NAH, he doesn't have the SPARE TIME to...) ;-)))

I go to a Goodwill Outlet where I live & yes I believe people should be able to do what they want with merchandise they purchase. But for all these sellers Goodwill should provide certain days for them to come in and shop. Yes these stores are for people that can't afford to buy from retail stores and most can't when you're getting knock out the way for "wolves" trying to make money off people donating goods to the poor!

The merchandise isn't intended for purchase by poor people - it' just for sale, period, by anyone, for the purpose of raising money from donated goods. Goodwill is quite happy for ANYONE to buy the merchandise. They then use the money they raise to fund their other operations, which are helping poor people. The stores also employ poor people, who would not have a job if customers were not coming in and buying the merchandise, whether for resale or not!!

The answer in any reselling is NO you cant make any money in one hour of looking for product. It must be cleaned, researched, graded, photographed, listed, packaged and shipped. Even if you just threw it on a local listing the odds of selling any specific value item in under 1 hour of walking into a goodwill are slim to none.
The biggest problem is many thrift stores including Goodwill sell on eBay now! And others if they don't often look stuff up before they price it and price it so there's no meat on the bone! Also as CH ran into here, there are A LOT of other pickers out there! When you combine that with all the competition on eBay, people making very little profit offering Free Shipping, it is getting harder and harder and harder to try to find stuff you can actually make a profit on! Especially at thrift stores!
And more people are BROKE every day, so DEMAND for used merch keeps INCREASING exponentially. Pete has two shops, but apparently his new one (in Chicago) is currently selling more than is coming IN... so it seems his 'small town' (with 5- 10x the floor space) is actually getting more merch coming through the front door, so a steady flow of sales, both online and off.
I have an IDEA to source things, and AVOID wasting TIME and EFFORT 'searching' for items to resell... I think I may implement it soon, as I went out looking for gold and silver to BUY on more than one occasion... only to run into the same challenges, x 10... At least in a larger metro area there are items to 'pick.' But in smaller towns (like Pete's) there seems to be less COMPETITION, to resell... and far more MERCHANDISE coming through the front door? And as someone pointed out above... GW's EMPLOYEES 'take things' for themselves. (Likely for resale on eBay, etc.) I'd fire anyone doing that, but they likely pay their employees, 'minimum wage?' And if their auction website is any indication... they don't seem to CARE about having a separate web presence, and likely also then resell themselves, on eBay?? Yeah pretty much. I have a really great one I got for free from re-signing my lease that has multiple heads, including both a heated one and an ice one. It was only $40 at Walgreens and they're kinda on the high side. If I had bought it I'd have gone elsewhere.

this video is a lie and misleading. This is the easy part. The stuff has to be photographed, described and listed to be sold. Many many more hours. This guy pays an employee to do that, another big exepense, overheads, a gas guzzling truck. These guys are building youtube ad money , that's the real deal, passive income.

Just a few observations from doing this myself: never just look at what something is being listed for if you’re using EBay to figure out what something is worth. It’ll be all over the board. Look at what it was sold for to get a true value of what it is worth. And even then your taking a chance. Do as Warren Buffett and buy what you know. And each time you go in take one item that you know nothing about and read up on it. If you leave empty handed at least you learned something. And don’t worry about your “competition”. There’s enough out there for everybody!

You wont find anything at goodwill that's worth flipping anymore. Goodwill caught on,raised their prices and started an online auction site. All the valuable stuff gets sold on auction and the junk in store.
These aren't pickers. Lol pickers find antiques and aren't lazy, thrifters go to a store by junk sell it for a stupid mark up and make it that we now have to pay more for junk we could find at a thrift store.

I saw a table at a goodwill store in their dumpster that I wanted. I made the mistake of asking the guy in the store if I could have it. He said no. I should have just took it. After all, they were tossing it away.
Yeah. From what I understand legally, once it's in the dumpster they have lost ownership of it. At least that's how I've seen it work with police stealing garbage to search. No expectation of privacy because they gave up ownership. That's my understanding.

tundratomo Goodwill is a non-profit that takes donations and resells them with the funds going into their programs. It's not a place for poor people to shop. Millionaires can shop there. Goodwill doesn't care, they just want to sell items and get the money for their nonprofit programs

Interesting perspective your saying it's hard and competition is fierce and your like bummed out. When your trying to make a profit at a store meant for people who are limited on cash. Imagine how hard and fierce it is for the mf just plain broke trying to buy a damn 1980s tape deck for some inflated price because pickers are artificially creating a demand for what normally would be "junk" and therefore sold at a reasonable price. Life's all about perspective. Not saying your right or wrong just interesting looking at the affects of this and different perspectives.
Technically you spend 29 dollars and some change if you sell on ebay and they all sell for a total of 100.00 you have to minus 30 percent for paypal and ebay fees. This brings you down to 70.00 now you need to minus what you spend on these items. Now your at 41.00 dollars. You spent an hour at the store. You had at least 12 items which if your a fast lister you can list one item every 5 mins. That's an hour. Now you have to package and print up label's that's an hour and half. Did you minus any cost for your ink supplies. paper supply or boxes to ship with? If you did then your looking at 1.50 per item at least. Now your at 23.00 dollars. So for a total of 3 and half hours you made 23.00 dollars. You made $6.57 and hour for your time.
