@@knifeyonline it's just an expensive gimmick, and doesn't offer anything more than a mirror does. In fact, it creates more issues than it solves. I shudder to think how much they cost to replace if one got knocked off.
@@Rassilon72 I can think of at least one potential advantage. The camera will tend to have much better low light handling than the human eye. So in dark conditions you will probably be able to see a lot more than you could in a conventional mirror.
@@Rassilon72 I’m actually all in favour for the cameras. But on a car of this class, they should be standard, and better implemented. But as for the benefits... #1: They offer better aerodynamics = slightly more range and even less noise. #2: Much better visibility in rain and in low-light. #3: No need to worry about blind spots. #4: More flexible - view can change appropriately when reversing, etc. #5: They SHOULD be cheaper to replace in case they get knocked off compared to a regular mirror. With the cameras, all the expensive bits are on the inside of the car. Exactly the opposite with regular mirrors. Just look up how much a wing mirror costs on a regular modern car. About £800 for my BMW i3.
Great review. All the basic ‘boring stuff’ dealt with, and then put into context by thinking about how it might be used and who by. The last thoughts, Polestar and Honda? Perfect and absolutely on the button.
I bought a 2021 model in ireland yesterday, exact same colour and trim level as this one, even wheels were the same but dont have the coloured brake calipers. Also dont have the virtual mirrors but i didnt want them anyway. It has 29000 kms on it and cost 36000 euro. Or 18000 miles and cost 30000 pounds in UK meaaurements. So somebody lost 60000 euro in this in 3.5 years which is 2 euro per km, nuts. But made perfect sense to me at that price level. I know the etron well, an uncle has the suv model and i have driven it plenty so i know what im getting into. Range not fantastic but plenty enough for me, we already own an ev in the house so no surprises or remorse Great video Jonny, i watched it loads of times in my research of buying one and when the Navarra blue S Line popped up i jumped on it. Dealer was 3 hour drive away from me but that just gave me an excellent opportunity to have a first long drive in it. 2 hours motorway and 1 hour regional and really loved it. So quiet, so comfortable , so plush. Just about made it home but its going to be sitting fully charged today and im taking it on a trip up the mountains today.
Yep I’m one. Drove the SUV eTron version last year and LOVED it. The amenities and technology is amazing. This Sportsback was not available yet, so waiting.
I'm getting my etron sport back next week (can't wait) - I'm getting it on an NHS lease. There's a lot of chat about the massive cost. The funny thing for me has been, the monthly lease cost for this car was significantly less than a tesla x and a little less than the ipace, polestar and merc EQC despite the varying costs of all those cars....
Hi Tom, I was thinking of doing the same. Is it possible to know how the car is. What real life range are you getting please? did you go for the 7kw home charger also?is the payments under 400 monthly? are you happy with the car?
@@febinneo hi - yeah, loving the car. Its big, quiet and comfy but it can shift when it needs too - it's a lovely place to be, it's all very intuitive once you settle I to it. Came out for me at £420 a month on 20,000 miles a year - includes insurance, maintenance, tyres (bear in mind they a £370 rrp a go! ), break down. But I get my full travel expenses with work and electric is working out about half the cost of diesel. (my normal monthly fuel spend was £200 per month or a tank a week ish - last 2 weeks of charging has come out at about £40 electric). I'm. Getting between 2.2 and 2.8kw/mi depending on traffic and how I drive - it says in manual give it 3k miles to settle in though before I pass judgement on efficency. Its thirsty vs other EVs but still cheaper than diesel. Haven't done a full range trial yet but it looks like 180- 200 miles with careful driving is achievable. It charges stupidly fast on a high power charger. Yep I got a 7kw pod point - charges up without a fuss reliably. 30% charge takes a mere 4 hours so even a full chargecan be done over night.
I always wondered, when filing up the twin SU's on my rover SD1,if the viscosity of the oil I used would actually make a noticeable difference.(and, were does the oil go? As it used to need weekly top ups)
Polestar 2 is pretty useless or longer drives. 11h45 for 1000 km, an hour slower than the medium battery VW ID.3 that's multiple classes more affordable. Full hour slower over a base Model S that weighs the same but has a much large battery and cargo space.
@@gbej1 I initially fell in love with Tesla, but feel the build quality is not the same as well established cars, such as Audi or Polestar. (Volvo.) That's just my own opinion and I might be wrong. I had a test drive in a top of the range model S and it blew my mind away. What Tesla have achieved is phenomenal, but other car manufacturers are catching up, most with better quality and a far more superior reputation. I feel Polestar are very different and I like different. Everyone will choose Audi's, Tesla's, Jaguars, etc. It's just my personal taste. But, just to contradict myself, an Audi with a combustion engine, such as an RS5 will twist my arm. And that probably doesn't answer your question. 🤪
John Cutler. What puts me off Teslas....at least for now, is the plethora of obviously sponsored Tesla reviews all over the place who will eulogies over Teslas as if their lives depended on it. What really gets me with the model 3 is people trying to convince everyone that substituting practically every car function with one giant touch screen is some technological revolution, rather than calling it what it is which is cost cutting.
What I love about Johnny's reviews are that it is like sitting in the car with your knowledgeable mate giving you the lowdown on his latest motor. Great work. Like the etron, but, evs generally are buying their way out of inefficient design with ever more powerful batteries - and that is a worrying trend
@notformebeaky Look fool. You cant afford a MX and probably havent even sat in one. But, as an owner, I can tell u, this POS Audi cant compare. No matter what your silly little brain thinks. The other stuff Jonny does is a welcome bonus, plus I don’t have to listen to certain rants (from another presenter I’m not going to name) which grated even when you agreed with him..
Nice and relaxed review mr. Smith =) . Little nitpick: there's lot of low frequency rumbling on the mic inside the car. You can consider filtering that out with a high-pass filter around 100hz.
@ana lord Merde is 'shit' and is commonly used as a swear word, like we use 'Shit'. 'Étron' is turd, as in what you, dogs and cats produce, not the sloppy piles cows and horses produce.
How would you feel about this car now, three years on. The pricing is now sub 35k, which compared to some of the others available, albeit it newer, it still seems to be one of the better built and more refined options. The range is still poor, but if you're not driving 175+ miles every day like most aren't, then range isnt as much of an issue as people make out. I ask as you have obviously sampled so many different EVs over the years which isn't something that I have the pleasure of, so I am genuinely interested in how you'd rate it in 2024. Thanks
Jonny I've gotta tell you, Fully Charged is not the same without you. Kind of sad about that but I'm so happy that you are doing your own videos now! Keep up the good work alle the best from Vienna

@@Cheetahcubb About the only brand differentiator between the two is the badge, though. The seats, grille shape, headlights, touchscreen for the infotainment, steering wheel and a lot of other parts are straight from Volvo, and one of the V60 PHEV trim levels is "Polestar Engineered", so they're only separate on paper. You're probably right that Volvo will do a BEV estate, though, I just felt that, had the Polestar adopted the shape, they'd see higher sales through being first to market.
I have seen some reports of e-tron owners on TH-cam and they all reported a nightmarish experience where the car was spending more time at the dealer due to a myriad of problems. And the dealer couldn't fix them.
I drive the Sportback and absolutely love the car. Smooth, quiet, luxurious. And fits my road bike perfect. Bought the Tesla charging stations adaptor and now traveling is even better.
The idea is great. But also it's another thing that's totally over-engineered and can easily fail. And what happens when the camera is obstructed by a dead bug?
@@mbirth how would a bug die on the back side of a mirror (camera)? Do you drive backwards allot at top speed in reverse? Do you hear yourself think before you type?
Markus Birth the lights are good, you essentially are always on high beam and the individual leds turn on and off to avoid blinding other road users. It’s so fascinating driving as a passenger and watching it light up areas and darken others

Slow the playback to 50% when he starts arguing with himself about the headlights to understand what he’s saying. It doesn’t fix the pitch shift, though.
After spending the last two days with an etron Sportback with virtual mirrors, I can say they’re really a nice piece of tech but have a lot of downsides: first, screen placement; they’re in an unusual place and you’ll need time to get used to watch at your door panel instead of outside. Second, lack of depth; the image on the screen is very crisp but flat, it makes difficult to quickly understand the surroundings. Third, visibility; while they can be adjusted, I use to have my passenger mirror goes down to show me the rear wheel when I go on reverse, that helps me on parallel parking. With the virtual mirrors, you can’t do that and parallel parking a big, five meters SUV becomes a bit more difficult, you have to rely on the bird view camera to make sure you don’t curb your wheel... Still, the geek part of me love them and I would take them 😊
"options" are just a sneaky way of manufacturers getting you to pay way more than you should for their product. the computer gaming industry is like that too, part of the standard rip-off culture.
It's easy, if you want 360 camera then pay for it, if not save the money. Thats what options are for. Better then have to pay for 50 options that i dont need.
@@Andi-ft5rt I think the way WLTP certification work is forcing less configurations on manufacturers so they put things in packages. Plus it also forces people to take it all.
Now that suggestion of the Polestar 2 & the Honda E instead of this is a way better option. But you know the school run brigade are going to go with the Audi, because of its status symbol badge and the fact it costs £80k they want everyone to see them in it.
As a Tesla Model S #P100D driver, I can appreciate the beauty of the interior and the build quality that Audi have. It is expensive, not the most efficient or fastest car, but with solar and cheap rate electricity that's not so bad and the 0-60 in 2 seconds soons wears off 😜 Great video as always, keep 'en coming!!
Tesla laughing all the way to the bank..literally when Audi and Mercs make their products look “cheap”. I’m a target customer for these ( 45 years plus / upper income / badge snob ) but seriously I think it’s just too expensive. As a company director, sure I can buy and right off against tax 1 st year, but even so, it’s a still lot of cash. Better to buy small EV like i3 or Zoe “for the wife/ station run/ shopping “ and also get a normal SUV for messing about in and long family runs. Price is more of a piss take when you think it’s based on a MBQ or whatever platforms... as the cost of manufacturing is amortised over bigger production volume
Such an honest, intelligent review. I think your concerns about price are spot on; this car is most usefully seen as a glimpse of where VWAG is headed with their more mainstream models - their primary problem will be bringing down costs.
Hey, stop picking on the model X! It doesn't look anything like a computer mouse! It looks like a minivan! Actually, it IS a minivan & that's why they spent so much money to make the side doors non sliding. See the illusions that a super star CEO can pull off?
My Q3 is paid up now my dealer called to talk about what I'm getting next. They loaned me the 55 e-tron for a weekend when it was launched and he knows I want an EV next, I made that clear 5 years ago when I bought this Euro6 diesel. They only have the two 'trons at the moment and they're way over budget. MEB based Q4 is on the way but 2nd quarter next year? maybe? He's asked me in to all about optimum trade-in and to see what they can do. I will go listen to what they offer and I'll be dead straight. I love the Audi, the build quality and the cabins. I've been the factory and suppliers here in Belgium for work, They're a technical masterpiece and extremely well engineered. Their pricing though, swings right out the pan. A new Q3, similar spec to mine is over €60k with all the options. for that money I've got a Tesla or Polestar and leaning slightly towards the Polestar because everyone has a Tesla, a bit like everyone has an Audi.
@@Hoktew electric cars don't power the motors while they are stationary. They are also more efficient at low speeds and you will get much more miles. You should get a Model Y though because it is 10 years ahead of this car.

Erik Pacic The build quality would shit on a Tesla from what I hear, Tesla is struggling to produce a quality paint job, not to mention simple things like panels lining up correctly.
Erik Pacic the quality of Tesla is not even closer to this or to Mercedes, Tesla is great don’t get me wrong but definitely they are not cheap and to pay so much money and don’t fell the quality when you get in, my wife has the eqc and you seat on it and see where your money go
@@shiraz1736 In an age of hyper fast negative opinion and experience, I think these are isolated incidents. There was a point where Tesla were building cars faster than they should have been. But Im happy to hear your experiences.
@@WillowGTI so when did the low quality Tesla stop being produced? There has been brand new Tesla Y with misaligned panels sent to journalists for review and there was a model 3 2019 owner who put up a video of his car shedding its bumper whilst driving in the rain. Tesla is at the bottom of the JD Powers quality survey for a reason. They don't build cars to the same standards as a traditional car company.
@@almac9203 Again. You're experience is through a third party. Did you actually drive one or experience someone else's first hand? My point is that these are still isolated incidents. I'm no fanboy buy my first hand account was the same as any other major manufacturer 🤷♂️
Model Y appears to have more room in the boot and interior and frunk and it's lighter, faster and much less expensive. Early production has been a disaster in terms of build quality and the interiors will never be a plush as an Audi but from all accounts the seats are comfortable, the car performs way beyond expectations and the build quality is getting better by the month...although it will not likely ever be as 'perfect' as the German cars. So except for the luxury interior and extremely quiet ride, why not add the Model Y to the list of optional candidates ... once available in the UK.
Love the video, hate the car. I can't exactly say why, but that is how I feel. Everytime you quoted what Audi said I just thought how dumb they were. The front trunk is absolutely useless, barely enough to stick a bottle of washer fluid next to the cables (who the hell wants to open an extra plastic door under a bonnet with two latches). The car is covered in lines that are supposed to look like battery bars, you know, the thing you stare at if you have massive range anxiety. 55 means 95 and 50 means 71. The charging port is behind a stupidly overengineered door. The cameras on the sides are almost as big as mirrors anyway. It's a "coupe SUV", whatever the hell that is. Thankfully they gave it the perfect name. As long as you speak French.
Absolutely, I would get the Polestar over this any day of the week. It’s almost as stylish, way cooler, far less expensive, almost if not equally as practical and has a better range than the Audi. Thanks for bringing it up.
Great review Jonny! Polestar&Honda-e comparison puts Audi price in perspective. Anyone else spot at 17:50 infotainment screen left hand/right hand swap between shots?

Hey Jonny nice to see you again. E-Tron Quattro and Sportback is too expensive. I wait to see you checking out the Q4 e-tron, ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Nissan Ariya
Vlad Saghin the ID 4 has awful charging speed! Maybe also the similar skoda. both have too few sensors. AND I do not think that VW has the same incentives to build the cars to last really really long. This is how the model y and the model 3 are build since Tesla will earn money on their cars over time. Incentives rules this world. I would bet a lot of money on that Tesla’s will drive longer than all other EV’s on the market. Tesla is the ONLY one that can benefit for long lasting cars.
Vlad Saghin you are also neglecting total cost of ownership which is really the price you pay. In that regards I am sure the Tesla Model Y is even cheaper than the ID 4!
@@ChristianPryds right, the 50k USD long range electric suv Model Y is definitely cheaper in the long run than the 32k USD equally long range electric suv ID4. Keep telling yourself that lol
The '55' is referring to the power output of the vehicle, not the battery size. The majority of Audis have it, even the internal combustion engine cars have it. This initially creates eight new model designations: - 30 for models with between 81 and 96kW (107 and 127bhp) - 35 for models with between 110 and 120kW (145 and 159bhp) - 40 for models with between 125 and 150kW (165 and 198bhp) - 45 for models with between 169 and 185kW (223 and 244bhp) - 50 for models with between 210 and 230kW (278 and 304bhp) - 60 for models with between 320 and 340kW (423 and 449bhp) - 70 for models with more than 400kW (529bhp)
My Dad was a big Audi fan and if this had been around 40 years ago it would have been his daily driver, whereas I would have had a Polestar 2. Now I think an iPace. There's a first gen eTron near me, and unless you spot the badge you would not know it was an EV. Is that what they are aiming for? A very good review.
Great video Jonny. If this had been released before the etron I think Audi would have received much higher praise than they got with the etron. This is the EV they should have opened with. Had it been around when I was shopping I’d definitely at least have taken it for a test drive. I don’t think I’d have bought one but it would have given me something to think about. But...... That price tag. Wow. Not sure if this is Audi attempting to limit demand because production is constrained but that’s a lot of money. The Jag’s not a cheap car so it takes some balls to go higher!
These reviews are awesome, but I think I can speak on behalf of sniff and say you pronounced sportback wrong 😂. Honestly these reviews are so much more relaxing that traditional influencers
Thanks Jonny. As always, a very insightful and balanced review. As a five-time Audi owner, I'm very disappointed in Audi's approach to electrification/decarbonisation, but I guess your summation does give some pause for thought; maybe their approach will get more of a certain type of owner into EVs... However, I'm also wondering how the e-tron Sportsback is more than 2x the car that my relatively humble BMW i3 is...
Great review, as usual ! When did anything over £25k become the ‘normal’ price of a new family car? I laugh at cars that cost this much as they sit beside me at the red traffic lights. Does the bread and milk taste better when you pop to Asda in an expensive car?
Great review as usual cheers Johnny! I love the summing up at the end! It's good to hear that someone like yourself appreciates the madness of these crazy expensive, crazy big cars being less capable than other options.
Whilst I quite like the look of this, and it's interior is lovely, relatively speaking it makes the Jaguar I-Pace look like a bargain, and that car looks stunning. Your alternative two car purchase is tempting too though! Love the t-shirt btw👍.
If I were buying an EV now, I’d probably be looking at the Soul. Yes it doesn’t have the brand power of the bigger names, it’s a bit boxy to look at but it’s practical. I really like the Polestar 2 but given the marques origin, I’d want an estate! And both would allow a naughty piston car for weekend fun 😁
Now looking at getting one of these used for about 25k with warranty. Looking to leave Tesla behind and love the idea of adjustable ride height, scraping batteries along the ground ain't pleasant.
I wish all cars had the side video mirrors! You're right the units on this car are bigger than they need to be. They reduce both the frontal area and the coefficient of drag.
"Third verdict" made me smile. Clearly, @carpervert has a dream - which I could get behind :). One more plus for this car: it will never be massively oversubscribed, like the e-up is. Or the e-smart. Or the Skoda citigo e .. or the Seat mii e.. ;)

well you can kind of see why he doesn't like them, they're visible in the video. 11:29 they seem to low to me and it's not where your eyes are trained to go...
How many times do you have to drive around the world until the savings from less drag make up for the £1500 rear cameras option?
I think the reason for getting that option would be more to maximize the abysmal range rather than saving money

There is a non coupe E-Tron parked across from my house right now, looks amazing,
I bought a 2021 model in ireland yesterday, exact same colour and trim level as this one, even wheels were the same but dont have the coloured brake calipers.
Range not fantastic but plenty enough for me, we already own an ev in the house so no surprises or remorse
Great video Jonny, i watched it loads of times in my research of buying one and when the Navarra blue S Line popped up i jumped on it.
Oh man. This coupe suv trend is so weird. I just don’t get it. Dropped 90k on it seems mental too.
Nice video again Jonny!
Yes, the trend is stupid and makes no sense. Having said that, I'd buy one if I had the money, it just speaks directly to my lizard brain.
You can blame the BMW X6 for starting the trend. But some people love it so there's a market for it.
Love the SU shirt! I'm more a Weber / Dell'Orto guy but respect for an iconic carb. Wonder how many viewers will get the irony.

@ John Cutler. Why not a Tesla then ? I’m not a big fan of Teslas myself but just wondering

Still, the geek part of me love them and I would take them 😊
They are crap. The Honda e items actually work.

As a Tesla Model S #P100D driver, I can appreciate the beauty of the interior and the build quality that Audi have.

Model Y appears to have more room in the boot and interior and frunk and it's lighter, faster and much less expensive.
Early production has been a disaster in terms of build quality and the interiors will never be a plush as an Audi but from all accounts
the seats are comfortable, the car performs way beyond expectations and the build quality is getting better by the month...although it
will not likely ever be as 'perfect' as the German cars. So except for the luxury interior and extremely quiet ride, why not add the Model Y
to the list of optional candidates ... once available in the UK.
Best review I’ve seen on this & conclusion was spot on.
I hate those coupé SUV. They seem like the hellish child of two things that should not have met.

The '55' is referring to the power output of the vehicle, not the battery size. The majority of Audis have it, even the internal combustion engine cars have it.
This initially creates eight new model designations:
- 30 for models with between 81 and 96kW (107 and 127bhp)
- 35 for models with between 110 and 120kW (145 and 159bhp)

- 45 for models with between 169 and 185kW (223 and 244bhp)
- 50 for models with between 210 and 230kW (278 and 304bhp)
- 60 for models with between 320 and 340kW (423 and 449bhp)
- 70 for models with more than 400kW (529bhp)

There's a first gen eTron near me, and unless you spot the badge you would not know it was an EV. Is that what they are aiming for? A very good review.
I've been in an e-tron... and believe me, those virtual mirrors screens, when they get some sun light, they get a lots of annoying glare.

Great review as usual cheers Johnny! I love the summing up at the end! It's good to hear that someone like yourself appreciates the madness of these crazy expensive, crazy big cars being less capable than other options.
Another top notch no nonsense review from a top notch no nonsense guy.
I was just going to mention the polestar 2 and came to the same conclusion. It needs to be an estate!
Yer see what the new Skoda Fares up can’t wait for the review
Now looking at getting one of these used for about 25k with warranty. Looking to leave Tesla behind and love the idea of adjustable ride height, scraping batteries along the ground ain't pleasant.
I wish all cars had the side video mirrors! You're right the units on this car are bigger than they need to be. They reduce both the frontal area and the coefficient of drag.
Excellent suggestion about the dream garage ! Emphasis on the dream part...
"Third verdict" made me smile. Clearly, @carpervert has a dream - which I could get behind :).
One more plus for this car: it will never be massively oversubscribed, like the e-up is. Or the e-smart. Or the Skoda citigo e .. or the Seat mii e.. ;)
