The way this whole Transformers thing started is Hasbro licensed a bunch of existing transforming robots toys from a Japanese company named Takara. Hasbro had previously collaborated with Marvel Comics on creating a backstory and character bios for their GI Joe toys and since that was working so well Hasbro went that same route again for Transformers. The comics and the animated series were created for the sole purpose of advertising toys and while the idea of the leader of the evil faction transforming into a pistol seems silly in the cartoon or comic the G1 Megatron toy is an absolutely amazing toy!

Welcome to the world of the Transformers! There is a LOT of things that get explained gradually as the episodes progress. The reason the Autobots aren't fighters is because they were initially the civilians on Cybertron. The Decepticons were built as the military hardware. Also, the first three episodes were made with the intention that if they didn't make any more that would have a conclusion. However, they ordered an additional 13 episode first season before the first three even aired and began planning for a Season 2 and the movie. If you do another reaction, watch the next three episodes just like you did these three. Transport to Oblivion, Roll For It, and Divide and Conquer.

That UFO Bumblebee exists as an official toy. The space van Wheeljack also exists, and is not much bigger than Bumblebee in robot mode, but is able to fit Bumblebee inside the van mode. There's definite mass shifting in the old show, but as it turns out, not in the case of that opening scene. Google Transformers Buzzworthy, they're pretty neat toys.

The answer to all the lore questions is... Sadly, there was none. The Marvel Comics and the Cartoon were being put out simultaneously, with completely different plots, lore, and actions by the same characters. There are no "true versions" of any of these characters as most of them had multiple origins/personalities/histories from day one. (The comics were months "ahead" but since there is no lore overlap that doesn't matter) In the cartoon what was true and not true changed episode to episode and sometimes even scene to scene. Hasbro literally didn't care and were just trying to sell toys. This randomness has been a gift in a way because it created the transformers multiversal notation that is now used for all transformers lore, and makes the whole Transformers IP very flexible and self contained. There are many TH-cam channels that cover this kind of thing if you are interested.

I love the original series. It was peak creativity. Cybertron just looks so incredible. And the series was truly epic, not just a few robots interacting with a handful of humans, there was some truly epic world building with the grand nature of the galactic spanning scope of the space opera saga.

Deceptions we’re supposed to be known for flying and Autobots were supposed to be known for their abilities on the ground. That was always supposed to be a thing. That’s why later on down the line the Autobots made the Aerialbots and the Decepticons made the Stunticons. Also the reason that Huffer said they weren’t fighters like the Decepticonsis because Autobots were designed to be workers and Decepticons were designed to be warriors.

I do love G1 but ya can tell they haven't figured out everything yet.
    Like why do you transform?
    Optimus:For disguise!
Why did ya need it for Cybertron then?
    Optimus: For travel!
    But you can fly!
    Optimus: Yeah and lol.
In later episodes they have a very good reason for why they transform but I won't spoil it because it's actually really good.

I’m really happy to see you watching the original series. Even though there are some, to put it diplomatically, some head-scratchingly weird episodes, there are many more really good ones. A lot of them are spotlight stories featuring one to three characters as the mains, which is really nice when they are more obscure characters. Don’t expect an over-arching story line like what you got with Prime and the other shows. In the 80’s, cartoons were pretty much reset episodes where the status quo is restored at the end of each episode. But there is character growth within some of those episodes, which endeared many of the characters to us fans. So watch them all, the good, the bad and the great.
I also wanted to comment on your issues with some of the strange things in the 3-parter. Mass changing was not anything the writers worried about. Scale wasn’t a concern because this series was about toys and it didn’t make sense to have a true scale Walkman or Walter P-38 pistol transform into 6-inch tall robots and still be able to fight a semi-truck. One writer even joked that Prime’s trailer was made from “disappearium” since in most episodes it would just disappear and reappear from nowhere. It just wasn’t that big a deal back then.
Autobots flying didn’t last very long. I think only in the MTMTE 3-parter and maybe an episode or two later, at least until the airplane based Autobots appear later.
I’m pleased you had fun. I think you’ll find a lot more to enjoy as you progress through the episodes. I recommend rewatching the Movie after season 2 and before you start season 3 just to refresh about the characters. It’s not necessary, but would make a little more sense. Especially the death scenes.

One other thing to mention is that the general rules for a mini-series/"movie" is that they didn't get set in stone unless the show was picked up. In those days there were a number of these shows, like Robotix that didn't get picked up though all were open-ended as a just in case. Transformers was a series that did and once it did the writers decided on some more rules, one of them being Decepticons as a whole have the power to fly while the Autobots do not (though the rule gets bent but not broken as you'll see should you continue).
As for continuity while there is no overall story arc there is some "soft" continuity that can be seen in most of Season One. Season Two doesn't quite play with it as much but it does exist. Again in those days as it was easier for a tv broadcast station to select any episode to put on any sort of serialization was discouraged. Some got through like Robotech but as a rule tv was like that for a while until the 90s.

The really weird thing about this, as childish as it seems now, is how mature it was. At the time we had Scooby Doo plots... a 3 parter? Unheard of. Tense music? No laugh track? Where's the mascot pet character to lighten the mood for younger kids? By the time Transformers hit the tv, it was just completely unexpected. Scifi but with a dash of humor and sarcasm. Big battles but also a lot of character interaction and actual infighting. Do you know what played before this? Most likely something vaguely based on a video game... or Speed Buggy... Popeye... or Peanuts. That was about it. The horror... narrative nightmares of mind numbing repetition.

    • @narlord8613
      @narlord8613 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

The thing is about the show that it was a combination of being produced by a Japanese animation company (Toei) and a comic book company (Marvel) and aired in first-run syndication (no singular TV standard and practices person). This came out post-old school Star Wars. So The Transformers filled a void quick.
