I had been using the cotton under the corners of toes for several years. My Podiatrist said that was his suggestion as well. I figured I could tolerate a little pain when the nail starts to hurt by shoving that cotton under the sore nail corner rather than have some doctor shove a pair of scissors under my nail after the toe was fully inflamed and very painful. I’d had that scissor procedure done once many years ago and vowed I’d never need that again.

I also pierced through the scally skin( I don't know what it's called) that sits between the nail bed and the actual toe. And I have a small wound for 3 weeks now. It is not healing although I applied tetracycline ointment (but is also contained a steroid). I have been practicing soaking in baking powder and plain salt(not Epsom) for the past week. I also applied Betadine after soaking and ichtammol after soaking and drying the feet. Plus I keep the toe in a dressing. Why isn't it healing? I will go on vacation next week to the seaside and it will be very difficult for me to be able to keep that wound nice and clean and dry. Do you have any advice?

I had that partial avulsion done and the next day after the bandage came off I had ZERO pain or discomfort. I didn’t need Tylenol or any analgesic. The bandage that wrapped the toe was pulling due to its bulk and when I walked it was slightly uncomfortable. But it is removed after 24 hours and if I were still working, I would have gone back to work with no discomfort. I’m not sure what pain this Dr. Is referring to and certainly not familiar with any week off need.
Prevention! When I grow up I want to be a doctor for feet like you are. I’m only a kid, just 38yrs. old so I’ve got my whole adult life ahead of me… at least that’s what my mommy tells me.

Prevention is key. Always cut your nails straight across and don’t wear shoes that are too tight.
