A byelection is held when a MP resigns, dies, or for some other reason loses their seat. A byelection must be held within a certain amount of time after a seat becomes vacant.

    • @chrisgraham2904

Yes, the 'by election' is a mini election that takes place only in the riding in which that mister had jurisdiction, or responsibility for. Through the by election, the Liberal held seat will be filled by a Bloc Quebecois member in this traditional Liberal riding. Similar to the people electing a Democrat to Congress in a solid Republican state. Fear by the Liberals that a change in trend is taking place.

The main goal of the Bloc Québécois is to defend and protect the Québécois interest at a federal level. However, this party could never be elected to govern over Canada. Its ultimate goal is to pave the way towards an independant Québec. What is too bad is that voting for the Bloc Québécois at a federal election takes away a vote for a party that could govern. In my opinion, if we want to remove a party, we are better to vote for its biggest adversary. We should vote according to our personal aspirations and convictions, but voting for the Parti Québécois is a "lost vote" if we want to remove a party from governing. 😏

Hey Tyler. Always great to see your interest in Canada and offering up another perspective.
What I would say to you is that much of what happens in the US & Canada are interconnected.
Our major political parties share the same sub-contracted consulate groups that are used down in the states and many of the tactics used are tested on one side of the border, then if they work, they try them on the other side.
Much like the US, we share a lot of the same polarization and division that is going on.
I find that there is a giant lean currently to stomp out Canadian's ability to get the true news going on and the push is on to see more similar results to what the US has. Where a lot of the time, you just can't get the news, even from one state to another, without going to look for it. And even then, it might be curated and leaning more left or right than what the truth is actually.
It's impossible to talk about politics here without people getting worked up, just like down there.
My own opinion is that people came out of the pandemic and really had time to think... And realized just how much everyone was not on the same page.
And the political parties and business community now want to capitalize on this and divide the country further.
There is a lot that we take for granted here, that I know Americans often look at and say, something like that would be amazing to have here (health care for example). What you don't see is how much we become under pressure to conform to the US model of how to do things.
Canadian's, again in my opinion, tend to care deeply and get very upset when things are moving in a direction that doesn't feel like it's true to our identity.
Saying that, I think people just want change for the sake of change. They actually don't know what they want... Which is kinda a big deal and even dangerous. I somehow think you and other Americans can relate with... You know there and what is going on.
I find, atm, we moved a lot more left leaning for some of what the country (and especially the businesses and politicians) would have liked and the push is on to flip it back.
People can give there own opinions, but let me use Alberta as an example.
They went from roughly 50 years of the conservative party being in power (our version of what the old Republic party was sorta like) to skipping over the liberal party (which was sorta like the democratic party... But really... I kinda feel the Dems are even more right leaning than our liberal governments) to going all the way to the NDP (who for many, would be seen more extreme left - depends on who you talk too). Regardless... They went hard left... And they lost there minds over it XD
Next thing you knew, they voted in the UCP - which is bordering the line of trump level extremism (again, my opinion - I'm sure that would upset some people).
Remember the proud boys originated (sadly) from Western Canada. Also, the first act of the UCP was to vet, block and filter news there. And it's a policy that many of the right leaning parties feel strongly about.
The current push by the Conservatives is to try and get the country to move back towards the right, but there is definitely a aggressive mix of opinions on how much they will want to match to "trumpism".
It kinda feels like when trump was first elected down there. People wanted change and just didn't want the same old thing.
I feel like there is also an attempt to shield and silent the younger generations of Canadians, who are becoming more powerful to vote and tend, again in my opinion, to lean much more left than any of the political parties would like.
But I feel also that people don't feel represented or have someone they see and feel comfortable to call a leader.
Many have long forgotten the original reason Canada voted Justin Trudeau and the liberal government in. And having the minority government shouldn't have been a bad thing, if the system was working and they were actually trying to work for the interests for Canadians.
Instead, we can't even have school groups visit the House of Commons because, they all act worse than a baby going through their terrible twos.
Canada has so much and their are so many positives. But we definitely are going through many of the same pains as Americans are. And while some of it is different, there is a lot that is being affected by how linked we truly are.
I just hope in the end, people don't loose sight of how unique and precious our US / Canadian relationship real is.
We may not always agree and we might have our differences, but I think in our hearts, we want to believe in each other and be able to know we have each other's backs in the good times and the bad.
Maybe I'm too sentimental and hopefully, but I love my American family and friends.
And just to make sure you know I'm Canadian - Sorry eh for the long winded message. And as one great Canadian said many a time - Keep your stick on the ice! 😉

To help you understand the Canadian government system (also used in UK, Aus, NZ), the Executive branch is chosen from the Legislative Branch of the Government. That is to say, all executive members are also members of the legislature. However, very few members of the legislative branch are members of the executive branch. In the federal government, there are 338 MPs (members of the legislative branch.) There are also 105 Senators. However, there are fewer than 40 cabinet ministers (executive branch.)
Under the US system, there are three separate branches of government, the executive (pres and cabinet), the legislative branch (House and Senate), and the judicial.
A byelection is an election to replace a vacant seat in the House of Commons. I think they're called special elections in the US.

😢 I believe that Canada's forces would do well to force dangerous individuals, regardless of age, to join the front line.
These are people who clearly have a need for violence that is not being met, but are too concerned with their own self-preservation to enlist themselves.
I killer instinct in our forces could be an asset. It would rid our streets of these dangerous individuals. It would free up places in prisons. And it may instill a sense of pride in their otherwise wasted lives. If they die in battle, they will have died a hero's death. If they return home, they will be heroes worthy of respect that had repented for their transgressions.
The same applies for American inmates with a predilection to violence. Make it useful! Men like Gus March-Phillipps were amazing soldiers, despite their attitudes. That's who we need in our militaries

In this case, the one seat makes very little difference to the division of seats among the parties. It's important because it suggests that the Liberals' traditional areas of strength are getting weaker. It suggest bad things for them in the next general election. A byelection occurs when a seat becomes vacant in between elections. Also, the Bloc Quebecois is a party that only runs candidates in Quebec. It was formed based on the idea that Quebec's interests were not being adequately served by the traditional parties.

This is a by-election in a Montreal constituency. This riding was represented by a Liberal MP but this time it was the Bloc Québécois who won. The Bloc Québécois has been in the majority in Quebec for years. We have 33 Quebec independence MPs in the Canadian parliament. Justin Trudeau risks losing power in the next federal election because the PCC is currently in the majority in Canada except in Quebec. In the Quebec parliament we only have 4 deputies from the Parti Québécois. But the polls give a majority in the next Quebec elections. It is possible that we will have another referendum in the coming years for the independence of Quebec.

I lean more left and I consider myself more progressive, but even I believe our sentencing of crimes is ridiculously soft. A group of guys murdered, decapitated, and hid parts of bodies around our area, and they got like 7 years. Our life sentence is 25 yrs and usually, people don't serve the whole time. There are serial killers who are living normal lives here. You can't sue someone without a lawyer, so if someone screws you over, there ain't a whole lot you can do about it. My town has gone to 💩. We have like 70, 000 ppl and like 6 murders a year for like the last 5 years. Ppl dying of overdoses daily passed out in the street or lighting themselves on fires in dumpsters. No help.
