Japan’s Underrated Overnight Ferry Trip from Osaka to Kagoshima in Kyushu

  • I took an overnight ferry from Osaka to Kagoshima in Kyushu, Japan. It was more like a cruise ship than a ferry and relaxing to spend 15 hours. If you are looking for travel ideas for your future Japan travel, this might be a good option.
The overnight ferry that I took: Ferry Sunflower
    The ship’s name: Satsuma
The route: Osaka to Shibushi (Kagoshima)
    The room: Superior Single Room
I booked through its official website. If you google “Ferry Sunflower English”, it will come up. Booking is available in English.

While it seems like it's for hospitality, the main reason is safety. It was first developed to force workers to be aware of all incoming or outgoing trains and airplanes as to avoid getting hit by one. Somebody who misses this is both publicly shamed in a way, and is also clearly visible to a supervisor.

By simply "reporting", letting your experience tell the story, you are indirectly helping the economy and future of these lines. From the lack of visible passengers, one would assume they could really use the fares generated by passengers. With such service that these ferries provide, their attraction is immediately recognized. The baths alone, where else can you get those? And on a ferry of all places, let alone a cruise ship in the west?
Just by passing on your experience, you encourage visitors to look for alternatives to travel in and around Japan. IF, I ever get over there, a relaxing trip by ferry, from one end of the country to the other, will be an experience I will be planning for.
Thanks for sharing. Also appreciate the time to translate to English, you honor us by doing so.

in my experience these ferries main purpose is for people traveling with their cars so they often look devoid of people, but car storage is pretty full. Especially the ferry that goes to different islands. I will say these ferries are also used by people who dislike flying, or whole family traveling with car. A lot less stressful and you can bring a lot more stuff. Really makes it easier that way as you can drive off the boat, and most of these ferry stops are slightly out of city center unlike train stations, so if you are traveling like he was, you will have to take the bus to get to your final destination.

I too wondered how they still operate with so few passengers, then I remembered there's covid and also Japanese summer is usually hot and too humid to travel...maybe there's another reason too?

    • @ArdaKaraduman
      @ArdaKaraduman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yes, I think it is mostly due to covid situation. You know these are mainly targeted for the elderly. And they are ordered to stay put, cause they are vulnerable. And the first covid situation in Japan happened in a ferry, so it didnt help either. I hope they recover once this is over. I will try myself too, a trip to southern islands, would be nice !

Thanks for the clip. Traveling by sea has always been the traditional and better way of moving around in Japan, if you're not in a rush that is. Flying domestically is kinda scary given the cramped flights they use, and driving is fun only if you have plenty of patience along narrow roads. Shinkansen works too, can be "luxurious" but don't eat anything smelly or yak loudly onboard. Personally I'd just use the ferry like the one above, you get to see how beautiful Japan is, and you get to sleep and shower too! 楽しいよ!

As a Canadian, I can second this. Those ferry workers are awesome!

I've been on ferries in Canada. The workers will just ignore you or look at you with indifference. Not necessarily a bad thing! But yes, I was very impressed by the bowing workers. Seemed very genuine.

When flying ANA the workers on the tarmac do the same thing, whatever country their planes are picking up passengers. It's very cool to see.

You’ll get the middle finger, then some tree huggers will block the road to the ferries to protest something.

I am harkened back to the year I backpacked around Europe. My husband and I did that right after grad school and we took two ferries: one from Poland to Denmark and one from Greece to Thira (a Greek island also known as Santorini). This was a while ago (early 90's) but they were nothing like any of these I'm seeing on this channel! These are gorgeous and so clean, just lovely. Not sure how they are today, but let's just say back then, the ferries I rode were less than stellar, to say the least. Thanks for these.

I love your videos! I really like that there's no commentary, just subtitles. That way we can see and hear everything and not be distracted by music or talking. I really wish I could travel the way you do, but watching your videos is just as good.

Laughed when you dropped that cake/pudding thing. Well done for leaving it in. I think the "Oh shoot" is what made me laugh the most about that.

It's crazy that the sun sets at 7pm in Japan in July.
Here in the UK, it hardly sets at all. It sets at about 11pm for 4 hours, but if you look carefully you can still see the blue sky on the horizon. It's so cool!

Solo Travel Japan: Your videos are great! Always interesting; you have a knack for videoing something in a very viewable way which makes the viewer seem to be next to you sharing your travel.
Thank you for especially showing the meals you are going to eat. I have never seen or heard of somethings, but they sure look tasty!
I have never been to Japan, but maybe I will make it next lifetime! 😃
Thanks again for taking us all with you on your travels! 🤗

The staff were very friendly in the way to make you feel like that, the ferry had a wonderful interior and although there was only bento the food was good and you got a good amount of rice for the cost of the meal, I almost knew you was going back to the ice cream vending machine, thank you for sharing your journey
