  • I tried a Japanese style cabin with tatami mats on the ferry from Osaka to Shinmoji. Tatami mats are made from Igusa (rush). It will be a unique experience.
    The fare was 17,100 JPY / 156 USD for one person
    Deluxe Japanese Style Cabin is designed for two or three people. It's required to pay extra fee to use it alone. Above fare includes the extra fee.
    Two people: 22,800 JPY / 207 USD
    Three people: 34,200 JPY / 311 USD
    *The fare may changes depending on the season and discount
    The name of the ship: Hibiki
    Ferry operator: Hankyu Ferry

    I can see the value in these ferry rides. It's like your combining an overnight stay at a motel/hotel with transportation included. Sure a Shinkansen can get you there in a hurry. But you still need a place to crash for the night.

    It seems a great idea to send the trucks by ferry overnight, so the drivers can sleep and be ready to drive when it docks.

    • @thany3
      @thany3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      And they move in the right direction while sleeping. It must be cheaper for the companies to pay the ferry, than it is not to move for 8 hours.
      And I imagine taking a ferry is hardly slower than moving on the roads, especially if the ferry goes in exactly the right direction. Japanese roads are pretty slow compared to many western roads...

      @@thany3 Not to mention the very high tolls on the limited access expressways in Japan. It's probably a lot cheaper to transport a truck by ferry than drive on a long distance truck trip.

    • @thany3
      @thany3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Sacto1654 It must be paying off, or they wouldn't be doing it, I reckon. I'm not sure if the drivers are paid while sleeping (they are "on the job", but also not really working...) but that probably also plays a role in whether it's financially a good idea for lorry companies.

      @@thany3 drivers are required by law to sleep if they drive for a certain amount of time, for safety and such. so I figure it's factored into their salary. It would be bad if they weren't paid for that time, that would make it attractive to sleep less, which would be unsafe.

    Thank you so much for this video, wonderful as always. Like the ferry, in 2017 and 2019, I took a "not a shinkansen" mode of alternative transportation in Japan - the night train "Sunrise Izumo" sleeper densha from Tokyo Station to Izumo (on the Sea of Japan side). I think these types of "alternative" travel options in Japan are fun and different! Thank you for the relaxing video.

    Nice video. I used to travel by myself to Japan often before covid. Great to know there is this ferry to try. I hope to be able to go back to Japan soon.

    WOW tatami on a ferry?! How amazing is that?! I look at my daily vlogs and wish I could experience such "interesting mundane" too. Really wish I was in Japan now!

    When you said “I am not the only one, there is another person “, I thought to myself “how do they make money? “
    Then you showed video of all the trucks and knew it has to come from cargo! :)

    I would love to visit japan and use these ferries. Even the food look really good considering it would be compared to airline food. But i couldn't be comfortable in this style of room.

    Wow! I've never heard of any place, ferry or not, where you had to pay them your hard earned money to ride, but then had to make up your own bed..just...wow!
    Great videos by the way. I love that you don't talk..but still get the message across. Greetings from Idaho, usa

    First time I thought about tatami layout was when I watched the anime "tatami galaxy". So the 4.5 size tatami room will always be connected with that anime in my mind.
