The white stupa temple at Divurumpola near Welimada in central Sri Lanka is a Buddhist temple that has recently become a major Hindu pilgrimage site. Also known as Raja Maha Viharaya, it is a place of worship visited by hundreds of Hindus and Buddhists daily. The temple has Buddhist and Hindu elements including stupas, Buddhist sculptures, Rama, Sita and Hanuman.
The name "Divurumpola" means "marketplace of oaths". Historically, the temple was used for judicial purposes by the colonial governors for a long time. In colonial times, criminals were brought here and asked to swear that they would not do wrong again.
It is believed that Goddess Sita performed the Agnipareeksha at the place where this stupa is located. During British rule, renovation of the temple and an idol of Goddess Sita brought from central India led to the construction of a Sita temple. Near this we can see the Istripura mountain where Sita was imprisoned. Exploration in this restricted-access area has uncovered evidence of human habitation dating back 25,000 years and a network of man-made tunnels. Some believe it was built by King Ravana for his secret journey.
Rampadai, the Tamil word for Ramboda, means Ram's Force. According to ancient stories, Ramboda is the area where Rama's army gathered to fight Ravana. It is believed that Hanuman first arrived in this area in search of Goddess Sita.
Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple at Ramboda is a major Hindu temple dedicated to the monkey god Hanuman. It is situated on top of a beautiful mountain in Ramboda. The special feature of this temple is the 18 feet tall Hanuman statue. This is the tallest Hanuman statue in Sri Lanka. The temple is an important pilgrimage site on the Ramayana Path in Sri Lanka. This temple was built in 1999 by Chinmaya Mission in Sri Lanka. It is believed to be the place where Lord Hanuman rested while he was on his way to search for Sita. Photographing of the idol is not allowed.
The 109 meter high waterfall at Ramboda is located near the main road. It is the eleventh highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Ramboda falls consists of 3 parts namely Upper Ramboda, Middle Ramboda and Lower Ramboda.
