What do spanish people in common think about Carmen - like Carmen the novella and Carmen the opera? I mean, they are not spanish, they are made by French people, it's like some stereotyping from the eyes of foreigners. Sometimes some people in the world say about Bizet music "pure Spain" or they say "absolute spanish character!" about Carmen or Jose, what do Spaniards think about it?
The story of Carmen is actually based on a real person. The music of the play is not far away from the spanish music of that era in general. I think the main fail is that, given the century and the area were the story is placed (Seville), there should be much more flamenco, if not only. So, Bizet music is quite pure spanish, but absolutely not gypsy.
