Seguiriyas*
Seguiriyas have very few lyrics and lots of wailing and are difficult to interpret. They reflect the suffering of human relationships, love and death. They appeared in the late eighteenth century and became more widespread at the start of the nineteenth century.
According to some authors, together with the soleá, the Seguiriyas is one of the most important historical pillars of the cante jondo, that is particularly strongly influenced by the interpretation of the Andalusian gitanos.
Etymologically, its name is supposed to derive from the “seguidilla”. A phonetic corruption has deformed it in different terms: “seguiriya”, “siguiriya”, “seguirilla” or “siguerilla”. Seguiriya” derived from primitive “tonás”, being created between Seville and Cadiz, los Puertos, Jerez and Triana neighborhood.

I'm glad you liked it. Pitty you can't read the subtitles (= CC - "Closed Captions") in Spanish or English. Only on a lap top or PC it's possible, I think. But luckily Funky gives a good summary.
Thank you to funky pineapple. After betapicts' reply, I tried the CC (thank you). When I first looked at this, the only word I understood was Santiago, and funny thing, I also thought the singer at the beginning's not the same person when only the back of the singer was shown. I supposed it's the man who's come back to say sorry and the woman takes him back, and they dance off stage to make merry during the festivals?
@@AKLHWO Interesting hypothesis, but I don't think it's a viable interpretation, it is the man who dances alone at the start. I would say that when Carmen Linares (instead of El Lebrijano) had sung this song (and she did it once) then it was Christina Hoyos who had opened the dance alone...
@@betapicts I see - the man appears first, so, he's the one being dumped and I should have noticed that. Perhaps that's due to my impression of "Carmen" - a woman dumps man would get killed, so, can't come back to say sorry. All this just shows one really needs to know the language, the tradition and cultural background so as to comprehend any art form more fully however one may feel drawn to it instinctively.
Exceptional! Her dress was absolutely bellissimo, it looked like she was dancing on a cloud. Both of them complimented each other beautifully; his masculinity could be seen and her beauty and femininity could also be seen. They were the perfect pair. The song was beautifully expressed in their movements. Well done.

Estar muy jóven el Lebrijano en este vídeo.
Los vi bailar varias veces, era hipnótico, no podías dejar de mirar y sentir que estabas ante algo sublime. Había honestidad en su trabajo. Las coreografías de Gades eran, y son, una preciosidad. Supo montar unos espectáculos que dieron la vuelta al mundo. Eso no pasa todos los días, por desgracia. Hay espectáculos que pierden su magia con el tiempo. Los suyos no. Cristina Hoyos le fué muy fiel. Siguió bailando en su compañía, aún siendo relegada en el escalafón. Siempre la reina del elenco. Es imposible apagar la luz de una estrella. Siempre en mi corazón.

Cristina Hoyos una de la grandes de ballet flamenco. El canto flamento siempre expresa la pasión amorosa y su aspecto trágico entre un hombre y una mujer. No lo entendemos ni los españoles porque hablan en jerga gitana y cierran mucho la pronunciación, lo importante es la melodia que nos indica qué tipo de danza se está interpretando. Saludos.

Esto es una obra de arte. No puedo describirlo de otra forma. 😢 Ella parece una serpiente cascabel acercándose sigilosamente a su presa, mientras él solo atina a hipnotizarla con sus movimientos, logrando una simbiosis de perfección mientras el cantaor y esa guitarra que no parece una sola, dan a la ambientación una atmósfera de plenitud.

This kind of dance is very intense . The dancers feel the energy running through their bodies for a few hours after their performance . My mo knew a woman who was a Flamenco dancer . Her routine was a few hours long . She used to tell mom , it took a long time to stop feeling the vibrations running through her body . She was a very well know dancer in the 1970s and 1980s . My dad's side of the family were from Spain. He had artifacts in a looked case , like a flamenco dancer's fan , high gloss with a matador , hand painted on it , made of very expensive wood , castanets and some other items . I think the things in the case were over 100 years old . My sister told me about the dancer my mom knew , I believe that it was hard for the dancer to be relaxed after her routine ! Those dancers that make it look easy and can make the facial expressions and play the castanets at the same time have been very well trained and practice often !
