I BOUGHT The FORGOTTEN Sport Truck The SHELBY DODGE RAMPAGE

  • I bought the forgotten sport truck, the Dodge Rampage. Better yet, a Shelby conversion Dodge Rampage with fuel injection and a turbo (Turbo I). Half car, half truck, full excitement... this little truck is efficient, fun, and a capable little hauler. This example of the Rampage was merged with another Chrysler L-body car, a Shelby Dodge Charger donor car to restyle it and step up the performance. As always this was a last minute deal so I called Ethan, asked if we could fly to Danville, Iowa in the morning, he said sure let's take the Cessna 182 RG. Thomas and I flew out and drove the Dodge Rampage 500 miles back to Wichita, KS.

    Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make TH-cam videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Thank you for taking care of my fathers truck. It has meant a lot to him over the years. The conversion was "kickstarted" when he got rear ended(very minor rear end) one day while driving into work when he lived in St. Louis. He had already purchased the 85 Charger that he was going to pull parts from, and had begun laying out when he would start swapping parts here and there. The accident killed that as the old Rampage rear bumper would no longer pass safety standards, making the car non street-legal if I recall correctly. That began the multi year conversion which lasted the rest of my high school years and throughout the mid 90's. I look forward to seeing what you do with the truck I learned to drive in, pre-conversion ^_^

Oh, you're in for it now. Keep the tin worm off and this thing will be around forever. Noninterference 2.2 SOHC with aluminum bearings and a high nickel block, heavy duty parts with a non-heavy duty turbocharging setup, you'll have a heavier transmission (diff spider gear pins will be the only thing to watch for but only on some manual transmissions), anything that breaks is a cheap and easy fix.
Well, except the exhaust manifold and starter, that's a lot of arms-extended creeper work. I've had a few 2.2 shadows, one got rallycrossed and abused rather energetically. It actually got driven ~100 miles over mountains, with 1/4" of the #1 cylinder's head gasket missing between the cylinder and water jacket. I just stopped every 10 miles and "burped" the gasses out of the radiator so there was actually coolant in the head.
Some great time earlier the same engine had made a terrible rattling noise once that went away after a second; this was probably a year or two before the head gasket incident, right after I'd gotten the car. When I was changing the gasket I saw there were a few dozen little crescent shaped dents in #3 piston's crown. So apparently the engine had "eaten" and passed a screw or bolt without damaging anything but my blood pressure when I heard it happen.
Also had an '85 Omni GLH which shared a lot of the interior with this... was pretty cool.
To watch for? That diff pin, if the transmission has been abused or is making any noises (this is an abuse or extreme mile issue, not actually common, but catastrophic if it does). Keep the clutch cable nicely lubed or it'll break, change it if you ever see a loose strand. Nylon vacuum hoses and such, of course. Uh.... that's it. I can't think of anything else, these vehicles were really, really solid.
EDIT: AH! Watch the engine mounts, if they ever get loose they aren't a big deal to change but get on allpar.com and look up how to center the engine. Nobody ever thinks of it, I didn't think of it, but on these when the engine isn't centered you could be fine for a decade or you could randomly break a CV joint the next day. If the mounts are good now, don't worry about it, worry about it if you change them. Even if you do break an axle I don't think they're $100....

Been painted once, seats recovered and original engine just rebuilt and punched out to 1.8 (from 1.6). My High School dream car. • @Groflmeyer
      @Groflmeyer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I believe he said the donor car was a 1985 Shelby Charger. I owned one for about 10 years back in the day. They were a mix of Turbo 1 and Turbo 2 parts picked by Shelby company and were rated at the time at 180 HP stock. The '83 to '85 Shelby Chargers were actually assembled by Shelby from a shell shipped from Chrysler with no power train or suspension. The 83 and 84 was NA and for the 85 the Shelby guys picked a mix of T1 and T2 parts (Not the cooler from the T2 sadly) to achieve maximum power and durability, so the story went. I know from working on it over the years it was a mongrel. The 86 and 87 Shelby Chargers were mass produced by Chrysler although they looked the same they were just glorified Lazer/Daytona's and were Shelby's in name only. They used a larger Turbo in the 85 Charger than was standard on the other 2.2 turbos of the day and as long as you kept the oil changed every 2000 miles or so and were careful to not shut down the engine right after ragging on it, they were durable. It was the same model turbo as found in the old 301 Turbo Trans Am's only with less than half the engine displacement in the Charger they weren't hand grenades like they were in the TA. Mine had around a 100,000 miles on it when I sold it and still worked like a new one but was cared for extremely well. I still miss that car ...

I have 3 of them including one with a GLHS drivetrain. If you can find a rear swaybar set up it really helps with the handling. Only was available in the aftermarket. Also, the skirt pieces that go behind the rear wheels on the "Shelby" Rampages are really hard to find. The only Rampages that came with the Shelby style were California Specials. It's a Shame that Shelby never got to make these as they are super fun with the turbo. Even a carbureted 5 speed one is more fun than most people think and they are actually a decent little truck for hauling.

Everytime I fly in those little single prop planes, I watch the pilot like my life depends on it. I watch what it takes to speed up, slow down, turn left and right and stop. You never know when you could be called on to land the damn thing. Always be prepared !!

Find a 91-95 AWD Dodge Caravan donor vehicle and turn this thing into a turbo AWD rampage. They were derived from the K platform, which the rampage is based on.

These are not K-Car based. They are based on the Simca-derived Omni platform. Rampage/Omni/O24 Charger/Shelby Charger are all related.

@@elcaminosunlimited but there is alot of interchange between the L and K-derived platforms. If i recall, the K itself is loosely a enlarged L platform anyways.

Uh Shelby’s favorite car of all time was his GLHS Omni. Clearly you truly don’t know the history of these cars or Carrol Shelby.

@@SillyDillysTunes ,favorite or not, those cars were steaming piles of s#*t.The Omni GLHS was the best of a mediocre at best bunch of cars, and a moderately quick POS.There's a reason Shelby kept an early Cobra big block(converted to an automatic) for decades as an occasional driver, not an Omni or Daytona.

David Humphrey it had to do with money. Carroll Shelby had a 550hp GLHS he stripped all the badges off, and would drive it at night looking for a race. He loved the car more than any other because he grew up a poor farm boy. Back when racing was for the rich ONLY. He wanted to one day produce a race car that was affordable for those with less money. Ford never allowed him to make anything like that. Dodge however did. The reason he didn’t stay with Dodge was because of the politics with Ford. The GLHS was and is over engineered. Forged pistons, rods and crank good to 450hp. Cast iron block with Nickel in it. It had multi port fuel injection, and disc brakes on all four corners. A thick sway bar, front and back. All of this in the early 80’s. The transmission was a getrag, corse cut gear transmission that has seen up to 800hp without breaking. The drive axles were much thicker than they needed to be and were equal length. The computer system was advanced by using a closed loop MAP layout that was WAY ahead of its time. They were cheap cars with cheap interior. But engineering and mechanically they were GREAT. NOTHING COULD TOUCH IT ON A TRACK OTHER THAN A 911 PORCHE TURBO. You clearly have a bias hatred for the car because you’re a Ford lover. What about the time the Mustang owners were in an uproar about him working for Dodge after the production of the GLHS? He called every one of them out to try and beat him on a road course in those heavy slow piles of shit. Not a single person showed ALL DAY.

Can't figure out why someone your age would be interested in this kind of ancient history, but admire you for it! I'll never forget going to a Dodge dealer in 1984 (I was 27) just to drive an Omni GLH, salesman just gave me the keys and sent me on my way, what a blast. Torque steer all day long but it got up and went. I wanted it but it was out of reach for me then. Surprise! A year later my next car was a 1985 SAAB 900 Turbo.
