at 4:03 you can see the mural painting of Roberto Duarte Silva, a famous chemist born in Ribeira Grande in Santo Antão Island, 1837 - died in Paris, 1889. He was a chemist first in Macao, then Hong Kong and then in Paris. Duarte Silva was presented with the Jecker Prize (Prix Jecker) by the French Academy of Sciences in 1885. In 1887 he became president of the Société Chimique de France. In 1863 he went to Paris, and taught analytical chemistry at the École des Mines de Paris (now the Mines ParisTech), the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures (now the École Centrale Paris), and the École supérieure de physique et de Chimie industrial de la ville de Paris from 1882 until his death. Interestingly, like Duarte Silva, I was born in Ribeira Grande in Santo Antao and I live in Paris and attended Ecole des Mines de Paris and and the École supérieure de physique et de Chimie industrial (ESPCI) de la ville de Paris.
Isn't the sheer variety of the Cape Verdean islands mindblowing?! And how crazy was capturing the turtles on the iPhone with no waterproof casing!! Portugal was in Santiago from 1462. The island was used as a slave stepover. Slaves spent between a couple of months to a year there to learn Portuguese and be Christianized and then sent to Portugal, Spain or Brazil. Some slaves escaped and their descendants are the "rebelados" and had their own village in the interior of Santiago
In fact Sao Vicente never received any slaves because it was populated after 1850. It was a stopover for british ships going to south America. There was a coal "station" where british boats would refill their reserves. To be more precise it was handled/managed by "british" jews from Gibraltar. From 1850 there has been a relatively large influx of jews from gibraltar, spain and Marroco (under spanish control) who settled in Sao Vicente and Santo antao.
@@Final50World yes, you can find jewish cemeteries all over the archipelago but mainly in Santo Antao, and in Santo Antao there is the village named "Sinagoga"
